Microsoft has acquired Smash.gg

Microsoft has purchased quite a few game companies lately, including Bethesda, Mojang, and Double Fine. Joining that lineup is Smash.gg. Smash.gg is known for providing numerous tools to help tournament organizers, participants, and spectators alike with a wide array of features. The money that Microsoft purchased Smash.gg for was an undisclosed sum.

While the company started in 2015 geared towards Super Smash Bros, they have since expanded into other esports games, primarily focused on fighting games.

Both companies have provided their own statements. From Smash.gg's front page:

"Since we started in 2015, our goal has been to build active esports scenes around the games people love to play. Today we’re excited to take the next step in that journey by joining Microsoft to help strengthen our existing relationships and explore new opportunities. Smash.gg will continue as a self-service esports platform available to tournament organizers from all game communities. If you have any questions about existing tournaments please reach out to hello@smash.gg."

Microsoft announced it on their MSN_Esports twitter:

Two months ago, Smash.gg posted about financial issues due to the slowdown of tournaments from COVID-19. While not every Microsoft gaming acquisition is a success, the recent shutdown of Mixer comes to mind, Smash.gg looks to have a bright future ahead of itself

In all honesty this is likely not going to affect Smash at all, my guess is that this is purely a Halo Infinite esport promoting thing (despite Infinite almost inevitably going to turn out to be a far worse competitive game than Halo 3 just like 5 is) and they're not going to defend Smash tournaments on their platform from Nintendo. They'd sooner remove Smash entirely than fight over something that benefits them none.

Not to mention, Rare is far more successful than before. Sea of Thieves boast 17 million players. Nothing from their Nintendo era comes close to that number.
there are also now more gamers and also yknow people in general soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

You do know Rareware's fall from grace was 100% their fault, not Microsoft's, right?
It was numerous factors but like you mentioned, wasn't Microsoft's fault, at least not the extent the internet narrative would have you believe. It believe that things would have been much different had they stuck with Nintendo but that's on things like, not having to scrap and rework every Donkey Kong product, and having to rework all their games to work on new hardware. Heck, we can even blame Nintendo for rushing Dinosaur Planet. I love Krystal and still enjoyed SFA but I still wonder what the original game would have been like if it got properly finished and not glued to Star Fox.

Definitely an app, a mobile app for both iOS and Android would be awesome, i hate having to use a ****ty Safari or Chrome interface. Also when looking for tourneys you get a lot of tourneys that have ended and just have ****ty settings, fix that, i dont know how but it would be an amazing upgrade.
