Venues Archive:

Michigan Union Anderson Room
530 S State St
Ann Arbor, MI 48109

The friendly confines of Michigan Union will serve as our venue for this tournament! Michigan Union is the center of student event activity on UM Central Campus, offering an abundance of resources such as convenience stores, computing lounges, and fast food restaurants. If you're bringing any TVs or equipment, make sure to drop them off where the map indicates. Parking is available for $3/day at Liberty Square Parking Structure two blocks north.

MSU Union Lake Huron Room (3rd floor)
49 Abbot Road, East Lansing, MI 48824

Parking is free all day at ramp 6 which can be found on the provided map. There is a food court in the union on the 1st floor, as well as several food options across the street on grand river

Setup drop off area is circled in the attached photo. Please bring setups!!! It is estimated we can fit 40 setups into this venue! But the tourney will not run optimally if we don't get enough! If you want to ensure that you get enough friendlies, bring a setup!

University of Michigan venue:

Pierpont Commons East Room
2101 Bonisteel Blvd
Ann Arbor, MI 48109

We'll be hosting this event at an established venue! Pierpont Commons is the center of activity on UM North Campus and includes food options, a convenience store, TV lounge, piano lounge, bookstore, computer labs, and of course the room we'll be playing in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/TBH2_venue_pierpont1a.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/TBH2_venue_pierpont2a.png

Parking is free at any of the blue lots, a short 5-minute walk to the venue. If you see signs that say "Parking Enforced 8am-5pm Mon-Fri" then you're at the right place. Make sure to drop off your TVs/setups/equipment first! The dropoff circle, marked green on the map, is literally a 10-second walk into the venue, so it will save you a lot of time and effort.

University of Michigan venue:

Undergraduate Science Building
Room 1230

Ann Arbor, MI 48109

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/USB_outside.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/USB_floorplan.jpg

Parking:
1.
First, if you brought a TV, drop it off at Palmer Dr right below the venue. Walk inside the parking structure and take the elevator up to the "PL" Level.
2. You can then park at the Palmer Structure ($1.10 per hour) right below the venue, or you can go park at the usual Liberty Square Structure ($3 one-time fee) which is further away but cheaper overall.
3. Go back to the venue, USB Room 1230. It's a short ride up the elevator if you parked at Palmer, or a 10-minute walk if you parked at Liberty Square.

Michigan State University venue:

Shaw Hall, East Lower Lounge

Great location right in the center of campus. The East Lower Lounge is located on the bottom floor of the building. When you first walk into the Shaw Hall, find the flight of stairs near the entrance (either the right or left, depending if you enter from East or West), then walk all the way down to the bottom floor. There should be signs to help guide you to the room.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&cl...ed=0CBIQ8gEwAA

IMPORTANT: Both venues for this tournament series are located in university buildings. Consequently, everyone must leave the venue in GREAT CONDITION to be able to hold class there the very next day.

* No drugs or alcohol anywhere in not only the venue, but the entire building.
* CLEAN UP TRASH WHETHER IT'S YOURS OR NOT. The venue has to look presentable after we leave.
* Do not wander around the rest of the building. We have our own area designated for Smash.

These venues are not easy to secure! If you fail to comply with the rules the TOs have set, you are only hurting the Smash community. It is critical that we maintain good standing with our respective schools.

All parking highlighted in green is free over the weekends. The parking right on front of the hall is usually full though. If you can find an open spot, feel free to park there, otherwise, use the Shaw ramp. The ramp also has signs everywhere saying "Visitors/Students Park In Meters Spaces," just ignore it, it only applies to the weekdays.

Michigan State University venue:

Fortress Comics and Games
425 Albert Avenue
East Lansing, MI 48823

The Shaw venue from past SWEETs was unavailable, so we're running this tourney at a card shop nearby! There is a spacious 1700 sq ft room in the basement that the owner has rented out to us for the day. Make sure you check out the maps and know where to go, because I don't know if anyone will have reliable cell phone service in the card shop basement to help you out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/SWEETVI_map1.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/rharn/Smash/SWEETVI_map2.png

1. If you have a TV, drop it off at the venue first.
2. Park at one of the free parking lots a few minutes away on campus (marked in green) or the paid parking structure across the street from the venue (marked in red).

Venue Policies:

* No drugs or alcohol anywhere in or around the venue!
* CLEAN UP TRASH WHETHER IT'S YOURS OR NOT.
* We have our own area designated for Smash. Be courteous to the card shop owner and customers in the other non-Smash areas of the venue.

These venues are not easy to secure! If you fail to comply with the venue policies, you are only hurting the Smash community. It is important that we maintain good standing with our respective schools.

Michigan Union Pendleton Room
530 S State St
Ann Arbor, MI 48109

The friendly confines of Michigan Union will be our venue for this tournament! Michigan Union is the center of student event activity on UM Central Campus, offering an abundance of resources such as convenience stores, fast food restaurants, and event meeting space. We'll be in the Pendleton Room, a 2600 square foot area with projector viewing and plenty of seating. This is the same venue as Super SWEET and SWEET Prologue, both of which held two hundred unique entrants comfortably.

For those who are dropping off a TV and setup on Saturday morning:

Eppley Center (ROOM 116)
645 N Shaw Ln
East Lansing, MI 48825

TV dropoff can be done at the front entrance of Shaw Hall, a dorm building adjacent to the Eppley Center. Free parking can be found at the Shaw Hall #1 ramp, which is on Shaw Ln right across the street from the venue.

Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous

Doubles-specific rules:
* Life stealing is allowed
* Friendly Fire is turned ON
* Pause is turned OFF

Placings in round-robin pools are determined based on:
1. number of sets won
2. winning percentage in games (win/loss ratio)
3. head-to-head winner

* In the event of a X-way tie in Singles Pools after all tiebreakers are exhausted, a best-of-1 round robin will be played out between the X players until there is a clear order of placings.

* Non-first party controllers must be inspected by TO staff before use in tourney.

* Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in forfeiture of the match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.

* Mage’s DQ Rule: Failure to report to your match within 10 minutes of its announcement will result in forfeiture of the first match, and then a complete disqualification after another 10 minutes has passed.

* Plank's DQ Rule: Any and all disqualifications that are handed out at the tournament due to tardiness will be complete DQs, meaning you will be removed from both winners and losers bracket, or removed from the entire event if you're late for pools matches.

* Custom Controllers: adapters such as a keyboard, GameCube controller or a Hori Mini Pad are allowed. However, players suspected of using turbo functions or other macros are subject to immediate disqualification.

* Pausing: If a player pauses a game, the opponent may deem that player’s stock forfeited unless there was a legitimate reason to pause between stocks. If the pause causes the opponent to lose a stock, the offender loses two stocks.

* Stalling: A reported case of extreme stalling will result in a warning, followed by forfeiture of the match as per the discretion of the TO. If there is no movement from either player, the trailing player is considered to be stalling.

* Player's Choice Clause: Players may play by a rule outside of this ruleset if both agree to it as long as it does not deliberately delay the tournament process. In the event of a disagreement, house rules stand.

* Double Blind Character Picks: Players may elect to double blind pick their characters for the first match in case of any disputes.

* Neutral Spawn Points: Players may elect to use neutral spawn points to decide controller ports for the first match in case of any disputes.

Power Ranking

Panelists: Beach, Ginger, Heartstrings, JU4N, MB-Smash, and tm
Last updated: January 31st, 2016

The Michigan Melee Power Ranking is a roster of the strongest and most competitive Melee players in the state. We hope that this power ranking can motivate up-and-coming Smashers to attend more tourneys and improve, and that the player directory can help organize the community as well as benefit everyone in Michigan overall.

Player rankings during this period are primarily based off of bracket wins and losses during this season, with a slight reward for higher tournament attendance to encourage activity. The previous season is a small factor, but round-robin pools, doubles, moneymatches, and friendlies are not weighted at all in the PR.

Power Ranking
1. Duck - West Bloomfield :samusmelee: +0
2. KJH - Detroit :foxmelee: +0
3. Prince Abu - West Bloomfield :jigglypuffmelee: *new*
4. Ginger - Holland :falcomelee: -1
5. Shaeden - Grand Rapids :marthmelee: *returning*
6. Beach - Howell :sheikmelee: +0

8. Juggleguy - Ann Arbor :falconmelee: -4
9. tm - Toledo :ganondorfmelee: -4
10. Paper - Westland :sheikmelee: -3

Honorable Mentions (alphabetical order)
Criphood - Mt. Pleasant :jigglypuffmelee:
Hellsing - Utica :marthmelee:
MB-Smash - Toledo :sheikmelee:
Tran - Holland :foxmelee:
Yoyo - Ann Arbor :luigimelee:

These players perform well and have defeated some ranked players in tourney, but are just outside the top ten in our opinion.

Inactive Mentions (alphabetical order)
Bigy - South Haven :falconmelee::linkmelee:
Blake - Kalamazoo :foxmelee:
Shady - Lansing :marthmelee:
Vaccine - Bloomfield Hills :falcomelee::sheikmelee:

These players were strong contenders before becoming inactive, and would likely be ranked or honorably mentioned if still active today.

Not ranked as high as you thought? Feel snubbed out of an honorable mention? Then step it up and start beating players ranked higher than you. Players won't be considered for an honorable mention until they've beaten others who are already there, and the same can be said for consideration into the top ten power ranking. Now that Michigan has had enough tournaments to warrant a power ranking, it's time for everyone to shake up the brackets and prove their tournament potential.

HA. I'm going to **** this list up in a month.

Good **** tho. Maybe this will give some people drive to win.

Questions I have:
-Why is Mikey considered an active melee player?
-Juggle > Scotu? IMO no, sorry rob. Reasons?
-Shady has beaten Velynn the last 2 times they played IIRC, including his Puff. But if Andrew is retiring his Puff..well that sucks. Velynn > Shady is fine for now, but if Shady wins again that should change.
-Placings don't matter, just wins/losses in tournament only correct? Just clarifying.

I'm wrecking everyone on this list.

Edit: and 1der deserves an honorable mention for sure.

Good questions. Since I was a panelist, I can answer a few of these.
First of all this wasnt changed by the recent tournament.

1. Mikey has been going to tournaments, and doing pretty well from what I've heard. He's wrecked Duck like a million times, and hasnt lost to scotu/juggleguy.
2. Juggleguy/Scotu was hard. Scotu tends to win the heads up, but Juggleguy is more consistent against other players. I can't remember which way I voted, but this could possibly change to Scotu above Juggleguy.
3. Personally I think, especially considering hte most recent tourney, Shady > Velynn. However, he does have that loss to Moose, which Velynn does not. So its a bit of a tossup.

4. You didn't ask this question, but IMO Moose should be number 0 :awesome:

Question: given his appearance at UMT4, does Shaeden still not qualify?

-Mikey does meet the criteria and has done things like win BAMF 2 over Duck, myself, and Juggleguy
-Juggleguys unquestionably my closest matchup. While I have the 4-3 head-to-head advantage over him, he's beaten me more recently and in higher profile games. Also, Juggle has beaten Duck and Moose and I haven't (during the ranking season). Conversely, Rob is 3-3 vs lain, where I'm 4-0. I also have a few shadier losses than Juggle (vs Sveet, brainjack, 1der, slayer, abu). This being said, I still think we're practically even.
-Shady vs Velynn is another close one. Velynn has had the lead throughout the season, but I think UMT4 shifts that in favor of Shady. However vs Duck, Shady is 3-6, while Velynn is 7-0
-As stated in the post:
Ranking Criteria
1. Head-to-head records in brackets and pools
2. Notable career out-of-state wins and losses
3. Previous ranking influence
4. Our personal opinion

Things not considered

* Doubles performance
* Tournament placings
so, yes, placings don't matter, and only tourney matches are considered

-1der doesn't live in MI, otherwise he very probably would be an honorable mention.

Shaeden told me he didnt want to be ranked =(. Plus he lost to 8 and 9 on the PR as well as Stratford (while beating 6 and 7). Not saying he's not a beast, but from pure tourney results I wouldnt know where to put him
Also I think 6,7,8 are very close atm. Lain definitely deserves a bump for his last performance.

1. Mikey has attended the five tournaments that we required between April 2010 and now, plus he's attended three tournaments since March. He's also 3-0 vs Duck during that stretch, 2-0 vs myself, and 2-0 vs SCOTU. He's also beaten top OoS opponents like Axe, Overtriforce, Trail x4, Mogwai, and Aniolas.

2. I actually voted for SCOTU above me, but the other panelists didn't. It's a close call for sure. He's 4-3 vs me lifetime, but is 1-2 in our last three sets. He has a better record vs Lain and Kalamazhu, but he has very few recent OoS matches (not saying that can hurt his ranking, but it certainly can't help him).

3. It's true Shady has beaten Velynn six of the last nine times they've met in tourney, but the head-to-head record is only one factor we considered. Velynn is 7-0 vs Moose, 7-0 vs Duck (Shady is 3-6 vs Duck), and has a VERY strong OoS record including wins vs Teczero, Dart x2, Little England, Pakman, Taki x2, BigD x3, Vro x3, Eggm, Kels, BigR, Rat, and Watty. Shady's career OoS record can't compare at all. Like I said earlier, Shady's lack of traveling can't hurt his ranking, but it definitely can't help his ranking either. On the other hand, Velynn's career OoS performance helps him a lot.

4. Yeah, we didn't consider tournament placings. If you lose to Mango and M2K in winners and losers to end up getting last place, you aren't judged any lower than someone who lost to Mango and M2K to end up getting a higher placing just because of how the bracket worked out. We only looked at who you've beaten and who you've lost to, as well as career out-of-state performance.

5. 1der doesn't live in Michigan.

In the first reply post, I've put up the career head-to-head records and career OoS performance that we looked at for everyone considered for the power ranking. Josh, the main thing you're forgetting about is OoS performance. Traveling to another region and taking out their players is always very impressive and can earn someone a lot of credit for this ranking.

@ Dan: Shaeden requested not to be ranked because he's "never coming to another tourney again" =(

Fair enough. I have no idea where shaeden would go either, he's the most inconsistent player ever (except when it comes to beating me :( )

lain's performance at UMT4 was definitely above his ranking, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that it should change his placing. I think it certainly breaks any question between him and KZhu.
His records were:
Wins: Crow, Hot_armS, Dre, dbpm; HIV+, Abu, Tremor, Slayer, Stratford, Shaeden.
Losses: Shady, SCOTU; Velynn

Of note in his wins Abu, Tremor (I also beat Tremor at this tourney), and Slayer are all HMs. If I'm not mistaken, everyone above lain has a winning record against Stratford as well. His win against Shaeden is rather impressive, though, but he did also lose to KZhu and Stratford.

As far as his head-to-heads go: with UMT4, he's now 0-4 against me, above Juggleguy he has no better than a 1-3 against Mikey. His best record vs someone above him is his 3-3 against Juggleguy, but iirc, his three losses are the most recent three matches. He's also still 1-2 against KZhu.

tl;dr: I think that lain's performance at UMT4 is solid demonstration of skill, I don't think that it actually changes the rankings.

Yeah, Lain didn't beat any ranked player at UMT4. His most impressive win was vs Shaeden, who I guess should technically be ranked. Everyone else Lain beat is an honorable mention at best. But we did compare his and Kalamazhu's performance to break the tie that was previously there at 8th and 9th.

Also, Rob, sorry for not giving stuff about my OoS performances, I don't really have much, but
Wins: BigR, Impp, 1der x3, iamthemicrowave
Losses: Sveet, Vro, 1der, Juke, Taki, TomR, Drephen, Tink x2, Kels, M2K x2

edit upon more thorough investigation.

Alright, I added them.

If anyone else has questions about the ranking or anything, post away, I think it makes for good discussion.

I honestly feel like there's some bias in these current rankings. I've outplaced Scotu 80% of the time, losing to him in pools (where I got 3rd or 4th seed) in a VERY close set this last tourney. Juggleguy, I'm pretty sure I have a positive record goes as far as recent history and have also outplaced him most of the time. I've got wins on Mikey, as well as games on Velynn + Duck. I don't see why when I pull upsets, it "doesn't count".

And I'm 2-1 against KZhu (counting recent history). I also don't like how you guys gave Shaeden the **** too. He's ***** enough tournaments IIRC to be on.

also, didn't Shady win the last few tournaments?

Dude, your post could not have been more incorrect, lol...

First of all, tournament placings aren't considered for this ranking.

Even if we did consider placings... no, you don't outplace me or Dan "most of the time" or even more than 25% of the time. I looked at all the results just now, you've outplaced me 2 times out of the 8 tournaments we've both been at since April 2010 (SWEET II, SWEET III, GSS, UMT1, BAMF1, UMT2, BAMF2, UMT4). And you've outplaced Dan 2 times out of the 7 tournaments you've both been at since April 2010.

You don't have a positive record vs me "as far as recent history" goes. You're 0-3 in our last three sets.

You have one win vs Mikey, not multiple "wins" like you said. And games aren't considered, only the number of sets you've won vs someone.

Purdue has this system where you can challenge people above you for their spot....what do you guys think abot implementing something like that?

Not really a fan. Puts too much (if not exclusively; i'm not fully sure what their system entails) emphasis on your ability to beat that particular player. Say (for some hypothetical situation with made up information) that I historically always beat Juggleguy, but Juggleguy goes head to head with several players placed above him (where I have never beaten anyone ranked higher than Juggleguy). To round out the example, say we have similar records against the people ranking below me and I am ranked 1 spot below Juggleguy. In this example with that system, I would almost always be overranked according to how I believe the rankings should be.

When did i lose to Vellyn? I remember almost losing.. but i don't remember losing.
It was pools a long time ago. The first time was a long long time ago when we both sucked in Chicago like 2007 or 2008? The other time was some AA tourney, the one where you and Drephen had to play 15 games, and by lost I mean you got up-throw rested 3 times in like 40 seconds.

Other then that, I don't care much about rankings. To many factors to consider

Spartans/Wolverines
Exhibit Entertaining Tourneys

Apex 2015 World Circuit Event
January 3-4, 2015
Ann Arbor, MI

Powered By:

- INTRODUCTION -

From the TO staff that has brought you The Big House series, MIOM | Juggleguy and the Michigan Smash community presents: SWEET Prologue!

SWEET, which stands for Spartans/Wolverines Exhibit Entertaining Tourneys, started in 2010 as a local Melee event alternating between campus venues in both Ann Arbor and East Lansing. It has since grown into a premiere Melee tournament series in the state of Michigan and one of the most storied series in the entire Midwest, boasting previous out-of-state attendees such as Mango, Armada, Mew2King, Axe, KirbyKaze, RaynEX, Kels, Dart, VaNz, Teczero, Yu, Abate, and more.

We're excited to be part of the Apex 2015 World Circuit for this installment of the series. Courtesy of Apex and Twitch, SWEET Prologue will feature several extra perks such as:

* $1000 pot bonus added to the Melee Singles event prize payout.
* Free flight to Apex 2015 for the winner of the Melee Singles event.
* Top 24 in Melee Singles will receive points towards the Apex 2015 World Circuit, of which the eventual top 16 get to skip pools and go straight to bracket at Apex 2015.

Join us on January 3-4 for two days of Smash action here in Ann Arbor, MI! Players of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels are welcome to attend.

- LOCATION -

Michigan Union Pendleton Room
530 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

The friendly confines of Michigan Union will be our venue for this tournament! Michigan Union is the center of student event activity on UM Central Campus, offering an abundance of resources such as convenience stores, fast food restaurants, and event meeting space. We'll be in the Pendleton Room, a 2600 square foot area with projector viewing and plenty of seating. This is the same venue as Super SWEET last summer, which held two hundred unique entrants fairly comfortably.

Travel:
IF YOU ARE DRIVING IN:

Parking is available at the Maynard St Parking Structure one block north at $1.20 per hour, or alternatively, at the Liberty Square Parking Structure a few blocks north at $3 for the whole day.

IF YOU ARE FLYING IN:

The best airport to fly into is Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) which is about 20 miles away from the venue. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation from DTW to Ann Arbor:

1. The Michigan Flyer bus offers round-trip tickets between DTW and Ann Arbor for about $25. It stops running at 10:30pm, so this option is only good if your flight arrives early enough in the evening. On their website, set your starting location to Detroit Metro Airport, MI and your destination to Ann Arbor (Blake Transit Center). From Blake Transit Center, you’re within a 10-minute walk to the venue.

2. The Custom Transit Ann Arbor Airport Shuttle offers a $40 dynamic cab fare from DTW to Ann Arbor starting at one passenger. The price increases with each additional passenger with this service.

Housing:
Recommended Hotels:

Red Roof Inn Ann Arbor South
~$65/night

Days Inn Ann Arbor
~$70/night

If you absolutely cannot afford to pay for traditional housing, try CouchSurfing to stay with an Ann Arbor local for the weekend. The idea might sound creepy, but I personally know people who have used CouchSurfing before and they’ve had a good experience with it. Keep an open mind, as there will be very limited free housing available from Smashers in Ann Arbor -- most of us live in tiny campus apartments here with no parking spots on-site.

Food:
Venue basement:
Wendy’s
Subway
Panda Express
UGo’s

Venue ground floor:
Au Bon Pain
Starbucks

- REGISTRATION -

Online registration is mandatory -- no transactions at the door. Due to space and resource limitations, online registration may be capped at the TO's discretion, closing down after the cap is reached. The TO staff reserves the right to announce this cap at any time during the registration period.

Registration link will be posted on December 1.

Events:
Melee Singles - round robin pools into a double-elimination bracket
Melee Doubles - straight double-elimination bracket
Project M Singles - straight double-elimination bracket *

Key Dates:
December 1: Registration opens
December 13: Venue fee increases
December 27: Registration deadline

* Just to clarify, SWEET Prologue will be treating Melee as the main event and PM strictly as a side event. PM will not feature pools and will not be streamed. The TO staff has limited time and resources to work with, so a full PM tourney with round robin pools and doubles (like at Big House) is not possible here. Please keep this in mind while deciding your attendance.

Project M Ruleset:
TBA based on data from early PM 3.5 tournament results.

Additional Rules:
* Player’s Choice Clause: You may play by a rule outside of this ruleset if your opponent agrees to it as long as it does not deliberately delay the tournament process.
* Glitches: Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in forfeiture of the match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.

Doubles-Specific Rules:
* Life stealing is allowed
* Friendly Fire is turned ON
* Pause is turned OFF

Placings in Singles Pools are determined based on:
1. number of sets won
2. winning percentage in games (win/loss ratio)
3. head-to-head winner

In the event of an X-way tie in Singles Pools after all tiebreakers are exhausted, a best-of-1 round robin will be played out between the X players until there is a clear order of placings.
