There is a picture of the victim after the beating that is pretty disturbing, as well as a video of the event, so be warned before clicking.

http://reason.com/blog/2011/07/29/homeless-man-dies-after-being

Kelly Thomas' father, a retired Orange County police officer, did not recognize his own son when he went watch him die at the UC Irvine Medical Center after police beat him into a coma on July 5. The officers were responding to a call about vandalized cars when they found Thomas, a homeless schizophrenic, and attempted to search him. Thomas' father says his son may have been off his meds, which would explain why he resisted arrest. Nothing explains the gang-style murder committed by Fullerton cops.

The top photo was taken at the hospital before Thomas died. The bottom photo is what Kelly Thomas looked like before he was brutalized.

Here's Carlos Miller (to whom I owe a furious and heartbroken hat tip) on the incident:

Kelly Thomas, a 37-year-old homeless man with schizophrenia, kept calling for his father as police beat and tased him repeatedly.

But his father, a retired Orange County sheriff’s deputy, was not around.

It wasn't until after Thomas slipped into a coma and was hospitalized with multiple injures that his father saw him.

And by then, it was too late. Thomas never recovered. The 135-pound man died five days after his run-in with Fullerton police.

Here's the L.A. Times:

Thomas’ father, a retired Orange County sheriff’s deputy, has asserted that officers used excessive force to subdue his son, who was unarmed, slight and of medium height.

After seeing his son's injuries and talking with witnesses, Thomas told the Register his son "was brutally beaten to death."

"When I first walked into the hospital, I looked at what his mother described as my son ... I didn't recognize him," Thomas said. "This is cold-blooded, aggravated murder."

Thomas, citing witnesses, said officers hit his son with the butts of flashlights even after he stopped moving.

He said his son was probably off his medication and didn't understand officers' commands.

A spokesman for the Orange County Coroner's office declined to discuss the case but said an autopsy of Thomas had been completed and the results forwarded to investigators.

Witnesses are asked to call Stan Berry, an investigator with the Orange County district attorney’s office, at (714) 347-8813.
Absolutely disgusting. Six officers for one unarmed man. I am not usually one to be "**** all cops everywhere" but these individuals need to be brought to justice. I wish I could say that without feeling like I should laugh at it.

Glad our police don't have tasers and ****.

Hopefully they get brought to justice but they probably wont.

Irvine, a city that is close to Fullerton, is a planned community. The police had a policy once (don't know if they still have it) of picking up homeless persons and basically dropping them off in Fullerton. There was a homeless encampment around Fullerton's city hall area. Irvine's policy may have contributed to an increasing homeless population in Fullerton, and that may have had something to do with the way the police treated this man.

The officer who accidentally shot and killed Oscar Grant in northern California a few years ago was sentenced to two years by a court in LA, the minimum sentence.

Recently, prisoners in CA prisons went on a hunger strike over inhumane conditions. They have been supported by activists and lawyers, and a lawsuit was filed on their behalf against the state. Hellish conditions in the prisons may be part of the problem of police brutality in that ex-inmates may emerge hardened after their term, and/or may carry weapons, or resist arrest out of fear of being sent back. Due to the number of guns in the streets, officers are more likely to respond with excessive force because they may feel as if they are being threatened even if they are not. Every person can be assumed to be armed until proven otherwise.

The officer who fatally shot Grant had taken a previous call in which he'd had to apprehend a suspect with a gun. He admitted to being shaken and nervous by the time he responded to the situation with Grant.

Cali, Cali's got problems.

It's sad because things like this happen all the time...at this point I'd wager the main reason this type of thing happens is because cops know they can get away with it.

This incident, like the countless others, will be "under investigation" until everyone forgets about it :(

holy ****ing **** what did I just see?

This is downright horrible oh my God. Why the ****ing hell would you need 5 police cars to subdue one homeless person who's unarmed and probably off his nut? God no words can describe how much I feel disgust at the police after reading that page Jesus Christ man what the hell. He's literally unarmed, he has no weapons, and the people in the video said that he couldn't be not resisting arrest anymore than laying down on the floor with his hands behind his back this is amazing holy ****ing ****. I'm going to rage if these police officers just get off for brutally murdering this guy who all they had to do was just put cuffs on him to begin with. He literally stopped moving, and they still kept beating him up this isn't fair

EDIT:

But hey, this is Orange County, I'm not surprised a bit in the least

Has anyone heard of the illegal cockfight bust in a residential home with police officers in a tank?

wtf does the dad want. he let his ****** son be homeless.

Anyway it's obvious this cop is never going to improve society on his own, so I'd use him as a live prop for the next saw movie. At least he'll be entertaining.

I dont think im going to look at the picture, sounds pretty bad.

From my experience of having a cop next door, all they seem is power hungry. (not saying all cops are bad)

But im guessing these cops were probably that sort of "i can get away with what i want" type of people, its sad that we have them but we do.

but seriously they kept beating on him after he stopped moving??? Thats not right, he was already unarmed

There's a fine line between justice and being disgusting and inhumane.

This comes nowhere close. It's just disgusting and inhumane.

He wasn't ********, he was schizophrenic.

Also, it wasn't one cop, it was six. The article was pretty short dude, you should actually read it.

A scandal happened like this in Houston recently, the worst part of it all is the the officers involved only got suspended for a week or so, then simply came back as if nothing ever happened.

It's madness to say the least, it just goes to show how corrupted and cruel the police unit can be, no dignity whatsover, just a bunch of shameless inbeciles beating up a person like some crazy animal, it's disgusting

A bit unrelated, but I read an article on how a cop arrested a free lancing journalist for doing his job at a crime scene. Charges were obviously dropped, because there was nothing to punish. There's actually a video with the journalist filming and then talking to the cop...the cop himself was pretty PO'ed.

In any case, I read this article a while back and apparently that entire area is filled with corrupt cops.

Saw this on Teamliquid, and it's ****ing ridiculous. The police system is ****ed up, and I cannot believe that the cops were not immediately kicked off of the force. Honestly this is one of the most appalling things I've ever seen.

Another article I read described it differently. He apparently drifted around and stayed at the homes of different friends and family members. He didn't have a permanent address though, so he was technically homeless. Sometimes he did camp outside, and it was usually because of his schizophrenia. He had been undergoing treatment and showed signs of improvement, but as so often happens with patients with severe illnesses, when he started feeling better, he seemed to have stopped taking his meds.

Damn, that is really disappointing. Cops are suppose to uphold the law, but time and time again and different occasions, I see many of them do nothing but abuse their powers to hurt people. I know all cops aren't bad, but there are certainly many. I have seen like every episode of cops (LOL :awesome:) , and what I've noticed about the cops is that they have huge egos, and when people talk back to them, their heads swell up with this illusion of power. This guy was probably off his medication like it said in the article and these cops were too intolerant with his antics...but still none of that even close to warrants murdering someone for alleged vandalism. I hope my view on cops is just skewed from all the bad stories I hear about them, I hope there is some legitimate good in cops everywhere.

Things happen. If one of my family members died, I would just continue doing the things i do.
It'll be sad but why would have to continue moaning about it?

Everyone dies. What matters most is you and your options.

But it's completely irrelevant.
I know that. But i have no choi--

That is horrible, cops are supposed to protect the people, not do irrelevant and unfair things like this.
Make me sick.

I'm not arguing, I'm telling you to leave the thread. I don't think me or LT could have made it much simpler. What you've said in this thread is inconsiderate and ignorant, and it'd be nice if you just left this topic now.

Cops scare me. So long as you are on their good side, and kiss their *** if they pull you over, or stop you, so long as you do everything they ask you to, you're okay. If you don't, you could wind up dead. The force here has a bag-of-guns for planting. No joke, they actually talk about it like it's funny. "If you shoot a suspect make sure you plant a gun on them ha ha ha ha." and I'm like o.O dude... really? "Duh!" ... I give them free coffee at night where I work so they're all good with me, but I still wouldn't push them. It's always "yes officer, no officer" if I'm pulled over, and whatnot.

Now court, that's different. I have been fined for contempt of court on now 3 occasions, and I don't think that'll change. I hate court, courtrooms, and court officers, mainly because I find the system to be flawed on so many levels. But cops, they're their own breed, their own category of person, and I would never think of crossing them.

As for this guy that got killed... it's weird but every now and then you hear about stuff like this happening... what starts as what should be a routine thing turns into a gang-bang of crap, Rodney King comes to mind... just seems as if cops are so high-strung that they need to release every now and then so when they find some poor bugger that fits the bill they all jump at the chance, and kill the person. I blame the job, but it's not just what you have to do as a cop, it's how you're made to do it. Our cops have to work 12 hour shifts... 4 days a week. One month overnight, then the next month during the day. This doesn't bode well for physical and mental stability, especially mental... or emotional. I'd wager that these sorts of ridiculous expectations are what leads to cops being on edge, when coupled with the fear of being killed at every turn in whatever drug-laden gang-controlled neighborhood they're having to survey. They're militarized, shaved heads and all. "It's a war." Meh.

Average joes given power is scary.

They probably see so little action that they spring at the chance to rough someone p that they believe deserves it. It's all justified.

Disgusting.

Police just doing their jobs, and making sure they keep themselves safe so they can continue to provide for their families. Don't see what the fuss is about.
