ICG saw something horrendously traumatic when he was a young, young child and now the suppressed memories are manifesting in various ways, including sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies

his bad grammar and spelling is probably just the result of ADHD and the public schooling system

Now that I've exhausted physical pleasure as a means to enjoy life, I'm playing smash again.

Just kidding. But I am trying to play more smash.

haha, i know it sounds janky, but i gave it a chance in the media metropolis and checked out the thread and some vids to see what the hype is about. it does look pretty good, though it is still made to be a kid's show. it's not the girly flowery type my little pony that we're used to from commercials catered to 4-year-olds.

anyway

you are kage the manly brutal warrior so

i'm sure you won't change your "no" opinion :)

Before I knew what League of Legends was, one of my friends who plays smash a bit with me told me it was just like melee. I wasn't aware at all that it was an RTS, he said "a lot like melee" and I immediately associated it with a fighting game, so for a few weeks I assumed it was a fighting game, but never checked it out. He kept telling me to try it and I would really like it because it's a lot like melee and has the same concepts... by that he must have meant it:
1. Is a game
2. Has rules to follow
3. Has a winner and a loser

So I download this thing and install it, then launch it and expect this cool fighting game, that I'm expecting to be some sort of fighting game that incorporates some of the elements from 2D fighters and Smash. It pops up... my face 0_o (highly confused)... then realize I'm playing some type of RTS game like Warcraft III.

A few days later my friends are all telling me how good they are at it and how I have to play with them. They keep asking so I play for like 30 minutes in a hellishly long match and finally quit out half way through, turn on the cube, and play smash.

Thought I'd share that lol.

Whaddup, everybody.

SO. I'm sort of new to this whole "competitive play" deal, since my cousin got me into it about two months ago. And I have a very serious question: My cuz keeps on talking about how I need to pick a "main" 'n' stuff. Should I just pick someone I enjoy or does it really matter? Will who I pick really affect how I play?

(Leaning towards Captain Falcon or Ice Climbers... like them a lot. But I'd appreciate your opinions! ^-^)

And after I pick, where should I go to learn all of their "advanced techs" my cousin keeps on talking about?

Thanks, guys!

I would suggest you pick someone you enjoy (but within reason). The two characters you listed would be great to learn. Keep in mind that Ice Climbers have some very special unique skills you have to learn compared to other characters that have their own unique advanced techniques.

I would, however, refrain from picking a character that has very bad match ups against many of the other characters. These would typically be lower tier characters like: Kirby, Pichu, Bowser, and so on. Not that you shouldn't try them out and see if you want to pick on as a main, but they are going to be mentally demanding for someone new to the game, due to the fact that you must input a lot of extra work to cover their large disadvantages. All in all, it's most important that you just pick someone who you enjoy playing, no matter how hard they are to play or how bad of a match up they may have against the characters you're usually going to be playing against.

On the topic of advanced techniques, there is a thread (http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=42749) that lists the majority of the advanced techniques. All of the most common and moves with the most utility are listed there. They don't explain how to do them, but you can just read them and look them up on youtube and there are a lot of good guides on how to do most of those things.

I would start with short hopping and fast falling first. Then try to do L- cancelling after you've gotten good at those two things. And once that's all in there, put them all together to work on what's called shffling (short hop fast fall l cancel). And pretty much at any point in between you can work on wavedashing, which may seem hard at first for some people, but once you finally are doing it in matches for a few weeks you won't think anything of it anymore and just do it. Before you start trying to do all thise stuff though, pick a character you like and work on learning all the moves and how to move around without messing up too badly. Then work on the advanced techniques at your own pace. You might get them down in a few week, or it may take you longer, you'll get them eventually.

And remember to play this game for fun and to learn and not always to win all the time. There are times when you should play to win, but the majority of the time play to have fun and to learn. You'll probably enjoy the game more if you do that and probably improve a lot faster than if you play just to win every single match.

Am I to take the IC comment as a warning? Haha

Dude. Just.... DUDE. These youtube videos have me hooked! I was looking up some tech skill vids when I came across THIS! The best part is, this looks amazing even though I know I can't fully appreciate it! I've spent the past few hours studying that tech skill thread, so I can tell just by the difficulty of waveshining, ledge cancelling (with Fox having low aerial horizontal movement as it is), and the frame-perfect timing of the multishine that this dude is hella good! On top of all this, I've located The Everything Thread, making this the highest level of mindf***. :psycho:

The only form of techskill I was introduced to before I found smashboards was WDing (I'm already getting used to these abbreviations!), which I already have a knack for; specifically with Luigi, who has the most noticeable one.

So L-cancelling cuts your lagtime in half? Aerial landing lag for ICs include 8 frames, etc. I don't see how 2/15ths of a second is going to make that much of a difference during gameplay... I mean, with BOWSER (who I've been practicing it with) seriously needs it, but other than that... Someone want to enlighten me on this?

Before you start trying to do all thise stuff though, pick a character you like and work on learning all the moves and how to move around without messing up too badly. You might think from that tech skill vid that I might have some high incentive to play Fox, which I do, but I've been looking at the IC boards and desyncing and chaingrabbing look INSANE! Two characters FTW! So, I'm maining ICs, and I might look for a secondary later when I know what matchups IC have problems with that I can counter with specific char.'s.

And remember to play this game for fun and to learn and not always to win all the time. There are times when you should play to win, but the majority of the time play to have fun and to learn. Yeah, I lose all the time as it is, but now I'm pretty sure I already know more than my cousin! I understand that in a tournament--and whenever you feel the urge, really--is when you should play to win. But mindset (I'm pretty sure) in this game is important. I've looked at Snips thread on Sandbagging and I've learned what it actually means to lose. I'm competitive and very patient, so this shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you sooooo much for your help, MTKO! I now know how to leave my cousin in the dust with all of this applicable info. From tourney videos on youtube, I can tell we have lots to learn, seeing how fast they move and assuming they apply all the advanced techs. And HMW is friggin HILARIOUS, imo!

I might even post some vids so I can have others analyze my playstyle. ^-^ Thanks again!

Sorry I cannot elaboratw more here (using my phone haha) but L-Cancelling is always a very important thing with all characters. The slower ones obviously need to keep up with faster characters. But at higher levels of play, every frame counts.

If a character attacks Fox while Fox is shielding, he can attack in those small openings. So you need to reduce the opening by any amound possible.
Fox is not the only character that can hit those small openings tho lol.
Also, some combos and set-ups cannot be done without L-Cancelling (even for the fastest characters)

Welcome to the scene buddy :) keep improving and keep having fun k

Lol, HMW had a similar effect on me when I was starting out a few months earlier XD

Anyway, I think I can sorta explain the significance of SHFFLing since I'm a C. Falcon main. Basically, that small fraction of a second you get from L-cancelling, while it appears insignificant at first, becomes crucial at higher level play. Considering how fast everyone else will be moving, you need all the speed you can get to match up. I mean, if you used an aerial into a person's shield, and didn't L-cancel, you'd be a wide-open target. But with L-cancelling, you could do the aerial, and probably have to time to jab in order to prevent a counter attack.

SHFFLing is C. Falcon's bread and butter. L-cancelling to gain that one fraction of a second is crucial in his combos and his gameplay in general. That one fraction of second is the difference between a single hit, and a 0-death combo (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea :p).

I mean, I'm pretty new too, but just playing around with the SHFFL, I can see how much more fluid it made my gameplay. You might notice that when you try the same combos as the pros you see on YT, you're a little bit late or you're slightly lagging behind. L-cancel, L-cancel, L-cancel.

It's significance varies from character to character, but overall, it just helps. The beauty of the L-cancel is that there is (generally) no downside to doing it.

Tres, I recommend watching lots and lots of videos to get the gist of how Melee play appears. You won't understand the rationale behind everything, but it would at least give you some sense about what the applications of all the basic techniques are. Once you have a decent grasp on tech skill, I recommend no longer trying to just completely mirror what others are doing, but pay attention to your own faults and try to figure out what tactics in particular cause you problems; it's still fine to reference other sources for fixing your faults, but the procedure of trying to identify why you lose and crafting your own responses is a valuable one that is worth becoming proficient at.
