@Strong Bad:I'd love to, but I haven't got the money now (11th grade students usually don't).
I'd love to see some american players come to BEAST 2 in Sweden this august tho. :)

Anyone know any bi-weeklies, monthlies, or etc in NY for melee (of course). If you do, are there any that are not upstate. I checked the regional zone and tournament listings section and I just wanna make sure.

Downtown NY would be convenient...that's only if there is one.

....yea I been there. Problem is I wanna go, but I can't no more. I have no one to drive me up there. My momz switched her work days to Saturdays and my dad drives her to work, stealin my ride. As far as I remember it was a pretty lengthy ride by car, and God knows how long it will take me to get up there by train.

If anyone knows one closer to 3rd Ave in NY hit me up with that PM, though I doubt there's one.

EDIT: Just looked up directions and damn son.... by train 2 hours

Funny thing happened recently. I was playing against my friends and some of them were saying how tech skill is just to be flashy and then they started arguing later on that certain techniques weren't meant to be in the game so therefore I'm cheating by using them. I didn't want to argue with them about it, so I minimized the "technical" things I was doing. They didn't mention anything else about it for the next couple matches... then I kept winning without using any advanced techniques and they started complaining because I was using broken strategies to win... :D It was funny. Just thought I'd share that, since I thought it was funny.

So I picked peach and just FC faired for 5 mins.

Ways to get around **** =3

It's interesting you mention playing to win. I definitely don't take every single match I play seriously. Sometimes I play just to practice certain new things I've learned or go for flashy combos, and tons of other stuff. Either way I'm having fun.

These same people I played with that thought certain techniques were cheating talk about how they want to be really amazing at melee and be the best. Yet, then they say how I don't play for "fun" and they do and that they only play the game casually and don't take it as far as I do. Makes no sense to me :D It's still funny though.

I'd say we have about 3 levels of scrub around here:

Level 1 - Claims they don't need to learn any "fancy stuff" and Johns about his/her opponents playing style, but still plays and doesn't rage quit.

Level 2 - Pretend they know tons and tons of information about the game because they think they're super intelligent and have broken down the game to it's simplest concepts. They like to claim the game is perfectly balanced, but john about your character for the entire match. They often stop playing after a few rounds and tell you they're "not really into smash anymore". C stick johns are frequent and expected.

Level 3 - They incorporate everything the level 1 and level 2 scrubs use in their arguments and johns, but to a greater extent. Often throwing their controller on the ground when they lose or turning off the cube. They claim every character you beat them with is broken, or come up with another John (examples: I'm drunk, I'm not drunk enough, your tactics are broken, you're only winning because you're trying to beat me). They often strike up an argument about the rules you are playing by and then use semantics to lead the entire thing off into a whole different direction. When losing in plain site they usually bring your political views, family life, religious views in to question in order to get the moral victory in the end. When you stay calm, don't talk much the whole match, and win they usually go home.

I find that when you're playing against casual players there's really no need to "Play to Win." These are not competitive opponents, and you could crush them in a tournament setting if you wanted to. Even if you play your best and **** them, what kind of a victory is that? What do you achieve?

Maybe it's better to play down to their level and make them feel like the game is actually fun to play. This would make them want to play even more and maybe some day turn them into competitive players who want to learn more.

F*** the level 3 guys though.

What's the best tactics against scrubs? I mean what would make the most difference between a beginner who knows the advance tech in theory but who isn't consistent yet (me) against some people who never l-cancel/wavedash/whatever.

The whole story is the following: I've bought the game a few weeks ago and today I played some randoms at uni. They had been playing for years and weren't good, yet I couldn't always win =/. I mostly went fox and they were impressed by simple shine spike lol.

Very true. Against new people (which is rare for me to play) that just play casually and have no interest in the competitive scene, I just mess around because I enjoy the game more than any other game. Unfortunately for me I'm usually playing against all level 3s :D

Sangoku,
If they aren't familiar concepts like spacing, simply dashing in and out of their range will **** them. Playing against people who don't know what dash dancing is is one of the funniest things in the world.

Indeed, I usually play alternate characters against lower skilled players these days but sometimes they really want to play my Ganon since I guess they want to feel the real warrior power and stuff. It's almost illogical that you would drive down a few hours to play me but I don't play Ganon for these guys, at least I think that's how everyone feels.. they don't care about my alternates, they want the real deal. That would be a Level 0 scrub lol.

another night of playing on a laggy tv where my friend literally just spams ftilts as sheik and the timing is so off it's almost impossible to do anything about it (without playing a spacie at least). The worst part is none of them realize how laggy this tv is. It slays me to no end

Can't you change the resolution? That's what I do on my LCD.

My friend's large TV lags a ton. I also have an LCD TV/monitor that I play on, but with my setup I can't feel or notice any lag at all on it unless I'm playing on a custom stage where there's a lot of stuff going on in the background. I find it super difficult for me to play on my friend's laggy tv.
