No, I made it out of the FFA unscathed, but we still used the old Sudden Death rules that weren't based on %.

I lost my final match of the set to The Doug on Peach's Castle, I had around an 80% lead on him, but we both had the same stock count so it went to Sudden Death and I lost that.

I'm not sure if I immediately played you after that Tim, but I do recall losing to your giant mushroom'd Jigglypuff on Mute City to seal the set. If anybody has any strats to counter a giant Jigglypuff on Mute City, you should post them.

No.

You also lost to me as a giant mushroomed Jigglypuff on Dreamland. Though, as I recall, in both instances I was ahead of you when I got the mushrooms by a slight margin.

I thought I had the lead on Mute, but I'll concede Dreamland as a really don't remember anything other than giant Jigglypuff is a jerk.

Great read. It would be cool to link to some of the old tournament threads. I remember reading through them a while ago, and reading great comments like "Ken hasn't proven himself yet, there's no way he can take down player x!". Ken would go on to win the tournament, four stocking his opponent in the finals

Thought about it, but they archived a lot of them so they were inaccessible. Then yesterday, I think they brought some of them back. It'll go on my to-do list. I did a ton of research just for this list.

Yeah, that happened. As I recall, MattDeezie himself was the worst offender. As Iggy mentioned, once there was a time limit, there didn't used to be a sudden death percent rule either.

16. Rise of KoreanDJ (2006) While he never won a national tournament, his rise into the elite was confirmed beyond doubt when he eliminated Ken from the MLG Championships in 2006 and placed 2nd. He was another player who retired well before his ride was finished. Nevertheless, a lot of players took inspiration from his meteoric rise after several MLG articles featured him.

MLG Long Island wasn't really a national tournament, to the best of my recollection. More of a glorified regional. However, I'm willing to be proved wrong. The 2007 MLGs were the mini-sponsorships that they gave to independent tournaments. Some were larger than others.

Yeah, wasn't calling it MLG LI even a stretch? I thought it was officially called something else anyways. And it was more of a regional but it was still huge. Bum <3

I'm probably like the only 2008'er who actually read the entire Midwest/Smash History thing on Smash Wiki before they changed it.

Great read so far, looking forward to the rest. Makes me regret not taking Melee seriously until recently even though I've actually been playing the game since 2006.

I can definitely remember wack rulesets. My first tournament experience in 2005 was quite different from the rules we play with today. Every stage was legal, and every match was a best of 1. When you registered, you had to write down two characters. The first one you had to use in the Winners Bracket, and the second in Losers. All of the matches were drawn out of a hat, so there was no bracket created. I remember seeing matches played on Big Blue, Flatzone (the G&W level), and I even played my first tournament match on Hyrule Temple. Although Taj wasn't present at the time, I heard of his legendary skill from all the other smashers there, as he was the top player in Phoenix, AZ at the time and I couldn't wait to see him in action. Good memories, and great thread.

lol "dug up." I haven't really been an active community member, but I do know a lot of what has gone on. I traveled to Richmond, BC for a tournament in 2005, but that's the only non-local (Alberta) tournament I've been to. I have played against Seattle people and Toronto, but not in a tournament setting. I stick to the Alberta local thread, and that's about it :p.

Does anyone remember the site smashbrosmelee.com? That was the site Gideon made, and he updated it with Melee news as it was released. Smashboards was created from that site as a place for people to discuss... well, Melee. When Melee launched in Dec. '01, people were rapidly making new discoveries and GameFAQs kind of took over as the main Melee hub. Gideon stopped updating Smashbrosmelee and focused on Smashboards. The GameFAQs board remained a main hub until 2004-ish, and it remained the main Stadium hub for much longer. Then as tournaments became more commonplace, Smashboards took over as the largest community.

I think the last update on Smashbrosmelee was sometime in '04, and the site was taken down a couple years later. The information on the site was incomplete. Namely the stage and item pages. I remember checking every day to see what characters would be in this game!

Yeah, the Midwest History Thing...I started that, but it mostly was something to keep me busy during a summer job. Never really got anywhere with it.

MLG Long Island was just called MLG because it was sponsored. As I recall, there was a very late announcement that MLG would be opting for the local sponsorships. The prize money was minimal (about $2000 total added to the pot for teams AND singles) so there wasn't much motivation to travel, and there wasn't much time to even plan for Long Island.

Anyway, third post up.

Ahhhhhh this is so interesting. I never knew the history of smash before 2006. ANd it's refreshing to take a look back at the past when I was first starting out. This game has evolved sooo muuuch and so has the community as a whole.

Hey Prime, I believe Kubuu started the hub, and WJ took over soon after (late 2004 at the latest). The hub still exists today, although it's been down for a few days in a row atm.

Not according to my recollection (old man phrase, there). Jigglypuff was a joke of a character at the start of the game.

Man, thanks to this thread, I had dreams about Melee last night. Guess I need to play it again.

BACH's videos/montages
You guys are so impatient. On a related note, if anyone has a download link for the BACH collection, I'd love to post that in the OP.

It seems like I get tippered by Marth in every single BACH video. :p At least I get a couple highlights mixed in there too.

Fourth hold updated!

You can rip off all of the videos in HQ with http://keepvid.com/

But it won't have the audio if youtube blocked the audio out.
