Hello Roy smashers!

Welcome to our fourth matchup thread. This week we'll be discussing about Peach.

General Ideas:
  • Favorability (100 to 0, 80 to 20, 50 to 50, etc.)
  • Neutral Game
  • Punish Game
  • Edgeguarding

Character specific ideas:
Countering Approaches
  • How might a new Roy deal with turnips?
  • Should a Roy player be enforcing more defensive DED usage in the Peach matchup?

Countering Defenses
  • What should a new Roy know about Peach's D-Smash?
  • Since Peach will be CCCing a lot, should Roy opt for more grabs in neutral?
  • What kind of playstyle would you use against Peach?
  • Is Counter even remotely useful in the Peach matchup?

Countering Recoveries
  • How could a new Roy intercept Peach's recovery?

Fairly new to this matchup, but this is what I know.
  • Defensive play is mostly going to resort to DD grabbing.
  • Pivot grabs are very useful when defending against Peach's walling techniques.
  • Turnips are a pain to deal with, so be in a spacing where you can punish Peach if she goes for a turnip.
  • DED is very bad in this matchup because it can get easily get CCC'd by peach.
  • Grabs will be optimal for approaching Peach.
  • If she tries to go into the air to approach with an aerial, only then use DED.
I don't have much experience in this matchup, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I play this matchup fairly often. Grounded approaches are your lifeline when Peach is at CC percents. If you try to approach with aerials when Peach is crouching you will get punished severely. F-Throw can combo into f-smash or DA. DA combos into a lot of stuff such as up-tilt which can help you juggle her in the air. You have to play very patiently as Peach has a projectile and can absolutely maul Roy due to his weight/fall speed with up throw chain grabs and float cancels. One thing you can do to catch Peach off guard is to 1st hit DED on an incoming turnip if you are near the Peach. This allows you to both stop the turnip and act very fast and potentially counter any over aggressive glide tosses. Another alternative is to wavedash through turnips and use them for yourself. Roy has a very long glide toss which can be used very offensively. When recovering be sure to sweetspot - due to Roy's recovery having a huge hitbox it is very susceptible to Toad. One Toad at nearly any percentage spells doom for Roy. If you're forced to recover on stage and Peach is at less than 100% she will probably get up from the ledge and down smash you so be ready to crouch cancel the first hit and DI the subsequent following hit upwards.

Ledge dash down smash can be a nice surprise to mix in when Peach is at high percents. It has very fast start up and is one of the few moves Roy has that can kill floaties.
