Matchup Discussion #2: Roy vs Mario

Hello Roy smashers!

Since it seems we haven't had organized matchup discussions, I've decided to start some that will rotate every two days to a new character. I will also be hosting these matchup discussions on Reddit; although, I believe I cannot share where since I believe that's punishable by self-promotion (if anyone can clarify this, it would be helpful).

Anyway, here goes:

This week we'll be discussing about Mario, the Nintendo all-star everyone knows.

Ideas to think about:
  • How favorable is this matchup? (100 to 0, 80 to 20, 50 to 50, etc.)
  • How will the neutral game play out? Should Roy be DDing a majority of the time? Or doing something else?
  • Does Roy have a decent punish game against X character?
  • What should Roy be "watching" for?
  • Is there any significant technique (DI, grab setup, etc.) Roy should employ while fighting X character?
  • Can Roy edge-guard X character? If so, how might he do that?
  • How can Roy stuff X character's approaches?
  • Will Roy have to divert from his usually aggressive play-style? If so, how?

Answers do not have to match the aforementioned questions. Even if you only have a few matchup tips, feel free to post them!

EDIT:

Since the PM Roy forums do not have as much traffic as Reddit, I'll be spacing out these discussions every week instead of 2 days.

First hit of DED eliminates fireballs with super low lag, allowing Roy to react to them without disadvantaging himself terribly both on the ground and when recovering offstage.

On the flipside, though, Mario's dash attack pops Roy up for free followups due to his weight (though that could just be me being bad), and clanks with a number of Roy's moves. The lasting hitbox is also awkward to respond to but again that could be my inexperience talking.

Didn't think of using DED as a way to hit out fireballs. I always used F-Air and jabs to do the job. Though I'm not as experienced in the matchup as well.

My best advice for this match-up is to not get grabbed. If I remember correctly, Mario has an extremely potent chain-grab/tech-chase game against Roy. Swat out fireballs too. Roy should have the neutral if the user can handle those two correctly. Enforcing usage of DED is probably really good, since Roy will need to micro-space really well due to fireball pressure.

If the Mario is being really reckless with his fireball approaches, you can opt to CC the fireballs and counter his approach attack.

Roy should also try to always sweetspot ledge. Going above the ledge probably means death if Mario is a cape-heavy user. Mix-ups might be good, but overall your priority will be the edge.
