Matchup Chart Project 2015 - Calling Ike Mains!

Hello Ike boards,

I'm Zareidriel. Over in this thread a guy called Assassannerr made a matchup chart, and asked people to help fill it out. It seems like it would be a cool thing to have. With once glance you could have a rough idea of a matchup. It won't be perfect, but for our first go at it in 2015 we're aiming for "somewhat functional."

So here's what I'm going to do. Go to every Character Discussion board, and ask the folks there if they wouldn't mind contributing. To submit one vote, you'll have to fill out one of these:

Mark each character with a - for a match where Ike HAS THE DISADVANTAGE
Mark each character with a number 0 for a match you feel is very even.

NOTE THAT I AM ONLY TAKING VOTES FROM MEMBERS WITH Ike IN THEIR PROFILE BAR. It can be as either "Wii U Main" or "3DS Main". But if Ike is in neither one of those slots when I count the votes on Friday, Nov 13, it won't be counted.

(Yes, for the avid democrats out there, that means you can vote for one other character as well.)

Like I said, they won't be perfect, and each board will probably be a little biased toward their own respective character. But the results should be interesting regardless.

If this thing is successful maybe we'll do a revised version in 2016.

I'm basically taking this as both characters in the matchup are played perfectly.

Sonic has mobility, that is to say is fast enough to weave in and out of our strings/traps, plus a good sonic can gimp our recovery in the offstage game, and even tho we hate playing these types, he can viably just get the percent lead and time us out. Nobody likes a camper, but it's happened to me twice. maybe I'm just bad lol.

Peach can carry us offstage to the place we don't want to be (at about a 45 degree angle to the stage) with her dair/fair strings, and can wall us out that way. She also has a pretty darn good punish game, although I think we hold the advantage there in neutral. That and there is always the random turnips/bomb/stitch that can make our lives interesting.

Just speaking from my own observations here. I'll also be honest and say that these two and Mario and Fox always make for a long and grueling match.

I also think a lot of the matchups that I marked as losing are quite close (45-55 or less), and the only ones we lose outright are against sheik (obviously) and possibly zss. everyone else we can punish, though the faster the character the harder it is obviously (again... man I'm king of observation lol)

Sonic is hard pressed to time out Ike with our huge range beating out spin dash reliably. We don't do as well off-stage, but we do well against Sonic when he's off-stage and we handle on-stage Sonic well.

Peach is interesting, we have to be the one to press against Float, or she'll use safe spaced float aerials to wittle down our shield until it either pokes us, or we have to drop shield. Peach is very unsafe when floating around us, due to our extreme range on aerials. We can usually just slap Peach for doing unsafe floats around us, with our good anti-air tilts and ranged aerials. She also gets hit with follow-ups decently, so our DPS is high.

I feel that Ike has favorable or neutral matchups across most of the board, with a few exceptions: Metaknight, Mario/Luigi, Shiek, ROB, and Ryu (ZSS is in there, but I don't think she's as bad as the others). I feel Ike's biggest weakness is not having a reliable way to get out of combos, as those characters all have ways to rack up tons of damage and possess reliable kill options. Ike doesn't have any fast aerials (besides bair, but that doesn't really apply to this situation), and both nair and fair start at Ike's head, so he's going to eat a good chunk of damage off of throws and juggles from those guys. Even though Ryu doesn't get as much off of throws as those others, he has a ton of tools/combos and Focus Attack screws over all of our moves.

ROB's stupid gyro pisses me off, I seriously hate that character. The matchup might not be as bad as I think it is due to my negative bias, but I hate playing against him, his gyro, and his beep-boop.

We go even with Mario after the buffs and we solidly beat Luigi after the nerfs.

Ike is like in Brawl, we don't lose to anyone below us on the tier list, but people above us give us trouble unless it's like

Falcon or Mario.

I was having a ton of trouble against a falcon who could get 4 or 5 up aerials off one grab, and I couldn't escape at all. How do I take on good falcon players?

Sounds like you need to DI better. Falcon can't get that many aerials with proper DI. Also don't get grabbed.

Ugh.

I know this was supposed to be by voting and all but... the Sonic one being "equal" as the majority (if its going by just "which ever one has the most votes wins") is just plain old factually wrong. When top level Ikes dominate top level Sonics by such a large margin in tournament (I'm aware of one top level Sonic win vs top level Ike), the votes need to be thrown out the window. Too many randoms voting and screwing over results.

Zareidriel I implore you to at least ignore the voting results for that one and go with reality.

This was actually supposed to be a secret, but with the Chart so late already I guess I can let this one out of the bag. There will be no "equal" results on the chart, only GREEN for + and RED for -. This will cause massive nerdrage, I can see many angry PMs in my near future. Hopefully people don't see this post too soon lol. But this is good news for you, Ike will have the win against Sonic by one vote. Otherwise there would be nothing I can do, if I "fudged" the results here I would immediately lose all integrity as a researcher. Not to mention the PMs I would get to "go with reality" in another fifty cases. It's a can of worms I humbly decline to even look at, much less open.
