Simon/Richter, 100% are for you. The most keep-away defensive characters in Smash history. They both are exact clones of each other so either one will work.

Marth/Lucina is also all about spacing the enemy out as well but unlike Simon they can pretty easily get in close. Lucina is a Marth clone with a balanced sword while Marth's sword does strong damage at the tip and weak damage at the base, so if you lean defensive I would go with Marth as you'll be spacing them out instead more then getting in close.

I agree with what @faygoshill said. I'm a relatively defensive player coming from Smash 4 and I have been liking Marth a lot in Ultimate. To me the important thing to decide is whether you want to be defensive with projectiles or go for a closer style keeping opponents ranged out with non-projectiles.

Marth in my opinion is great at keeping opponents ranged out from him and he is really good at juggling as well, allowing you to stay grounded an defensive while still racking up damage. With the buffed air moves in Ultimate he had some solid out of shield options with his air moves too. He can suffer if you are forced to be the agressor versus a character with a good projectile game though in my opinion.

Richter and Simon on the other hand have insane projectiles which can absolutely keep opponents far away from you. Their super long range attacks help a lot too. These guys are pretty good!

Overall I'd decide which style you prefer and go to characters that fit that strength. I personally don't like projectiles so I prefer Marth/Lucina.

I agree with you completely. I mained Lucina in Smash 4 so I will probably try and go with her, or Marth. I really like getting up close and personal rather than spamming projectiles. Thanks for the advice!

If you could play as Assist Trophies, pick Guile all the way. Lol

But Marth and Simon have great spacing tools. What is there to say that hasn’t already been said?

Consider Zelda too. The jury is out on whether or not she'll be truly competitive, but spacing is the name of the game for her as well. Palutena plays pretty defensively as well. Try 'em out if the Belmonts or Marth/Lucina aren't clicking for you.
