Pokemon Trainer is designed to be a set. Even if you want to specialize in Ivysaur, it's best if you at least learn the basics of Squirtle and Charizard just in case you have to switch. You don't have to master them but you at least want to be competent with them enough that you can play them for a few minutes.
There are going to be situations where Ivysaur just won't be able to land or recover.
