After years, Ridley has finally joined the battle!

This ferocious fighter hails from the Metroid series as Samus's eternal rival. His intelligence is only matched by his brutality. In smash, he wont hold back.

Specials
Neutral: chargeable wave of bouncing fireballs
Side: command grab that drags your opponent across the ground and throws them
Down: a tail pierce attack with a powerful sweetspot.
Up special: a multi-directional charge. Does damage as well as used for recovery

Final smash- charges forward before skipping to a cutscene where Ridley blows up their opponent, along with Samus's gunship

1. Who is Ridley?
Ridley is :4samus: 's long standing Rival from the metroid series appearing in multiple games to fight her. The rivalry started when RIdley invaded Samus's home planet, leading to the death (and devouring) of her parents by Ridley and his band of Space Piirates. This, of course, meant that Samus was an orphan, leading to the Chozo raising her so she could begin her adventure and save the Galaxy. Without Ridley, the events of Metroid would have never happened

He appears in most of the metroid games with the exception of Metroid 2, Metroid prime 2, Echoes (which he was originally planned for), metroid prime hunters, and Metroid Prime Federation Force.
Yes that includes the pinball game.

He is very important to Super Metroid, where he abducts the baby metroid, leading to Samus following him to Zebes, and Metroid Prime, in which the entire game is pretty much Samus hunting down Meta Ridley after he escapes Frigate Orpheon, although he doesnt wind up as the final boss.

He has, at the moment, 5 forms:
Original (see brawl)
Meta (see brawl 2nd fight, metroid prime 1 and 3)
Omega (see top of thread and metroid Prime 3)
Neo-Ridley (the X-parasite version from Metroid Fusion)
and Clone Ridley AKA roidley (because of his massive body in Metroid Other M)
There is also another "form" called Black Ridley which he uses in Smash For Wii U. In the English localization this was mistakenly called "Meta Ridley"

Strangely, there is also a Mecha Ridley which appears in Metroid Zero Mission as the final boss. Which brings me to something about you might not expect.

Ridley is actually not just some feral monster even if he looks like one. He actually has intelligence. Ridley is extremely intelligent and also a bit psychotic as well as being narcissistic. Not only was he able to create a giant robot, but he modeled after himself. He is also capable of speech according to the official manga in which he torments Samus quite a bit. He specifically waits until Samus is at her most vulnerable twice in Metroid Prime 3 as well. Once while she is stuck in her morph ball and another after throwing her down Norion's giant pit.

Also, in Other M, he uses Samus in order to kill Kihunter so that he can get food, then attacks her while she is alone instead of surrounded by GF. Then, after being defeated, he plays dead K. rool style before escaping.

so he isnt just some dumb beast but a calculating villain. how nice.

In smash 4, the clone of Ridley created by the Galactic Federation appears to haunt fighters.

He has currently appeared in every generation of smash bros.
in 64 he is a background element of Zebes, in Melee he is in the opening cinematic and a trophy, in brawl he is 2 bosses, and in smash 4 he is the boss of Pyrosphere. He also appears in the code of the 3ds version.

2. Why should he be in Smash?
Big ole purple dragon with great importance to Metroid. Plus he is extremely popular. And if you care about "reps" or "more villains" well he is your guy for Metroid. He could be very unique as well as there is still plenty to take from dragons and a few Ridley specific things.

3. How would he work?
Well for one he is a dragon. . .
He is able to fly, shoot fire balls and a few other projectiles, and use his sharp claw and especially useful tail to attack.

here is a mod made by a 14 year old*.
shout out to @BaganSmashBros
*at the time

Now imagine someone with as much imagination as Sakurai, and enough manpower as Nintendo working on this.

I understand people have a problem seeing past the size issue. And that is fine. Most likely, that will be the topic discussed most in this thread.

All I ask is that you respect the wishes of other users in wanting a character for a children's video game.

4. Does Ridley appear in the most recent Metroid game, Samus Returns?
Yup. Even thoug Ridley was not in Metroid 2, he appears as the FINAL BOSS of the remake. This time, as a new from, Proteus Ridley.

Being added to a game they weren't already in, as the final boss no less, is a decently big deal.
And before we get to "Sakurai already said it won't happen" discussions, he has changed his mind in the past. Such as with Villager. Now this opinion did last two games instead of just one, but everyone is at least a little fickle. The chance of Sakurai changing his mind in a new game is certainly a non zero amount.

Swamp said it pretty well here

Okay guys. I want Ridley as much as the next guy but let's not get too hasty here.

Pac-Man, Miis and Villager all got a second chance, yes. That doesn't mean Ridley automatically gets one as well.

We have to remember, those three got rejected once. Ridley has been rejected twice and the reasoning for the decision has held stayed the same both times. Sakurai has stayed firm on the matter and I don't see him changing any time soon.

If Ridley is going to be included it'll be due to one of three things.

  1. Sakurai leaves and the next director decides to include Ridley. This is a crap shoot though. New director could feel the same.
  2. Smash gets a serious reboot to include characters of a much larger size scale. This probably won't happen.
  3. Ridley gets a new design in the Metroid franchise that is more suitable to Smash.
If any of those happen, I'd bet on 3, but I don't see that happening.

That said, I'm not saying this to discourage you guys. I just want to keep things in check. We're all here cause we have a passion for Ridley and think him being in Smash is cool. We don't need to defend our character choice like we have anything to lose here guys. This should be a fun place to hypothesize and discuss ideas and if Ridley does make it in, we celebrate.

tl.dr

Ridley probably won't make it in, but that's okay because we can still have fun.
Although no need to be all doom and gloom since speculation is mean to be fun. Just enjoy the community and the thread

And. . .one more detail that has recently come to light. The ResetERA "hints"
During the hype of the March direct, staff of the site ResetERA began to hype things up themselves. This included multiple hints that smash would appear in the direct. Obviously, this was correct. However, what is relevant to this thread is what was said by Nibel and, most importantly, Jonneh. Both are ResetERA staff and gave a few special hints of their own.
https://www.resetera.com/posts/5342832/

Now, for the sake of my sanity, im mostly going to ignore this one. Nibel could have meant anything, and I dont want to turn this into a Ridley shadow analysis. Im going to mostly focus on Jonneh.

https://www.resetera.com/posts/5343241/

https://www.resetera.com/posts/5308945/

ResetERA staff member, Jonneh, began hinting at something "too big." But that's not all
There was a problem fetching the tweet
Even on twitter, we have little hints to tie things together.
EDIT: these were previously tweets about a ridley image being "too big" and then a reply "We'll get back to this," both deleted by Jonneh

It's clear to me, that this is all hinting a Ridley having a "big" role. :p

And before people go "but wait!" Jonneh has had a pretty good track record of late.
https://www.resetera.com/threads/re...tered-announcement.15636/page-34#post-3140394

Here he is, hinting at Mario Tennis Aces
And here he is hinting at Captain Toad on 3DS and Switch

So he isn't just a nobody and clearly has ties to insider information. Now, does that mean Ridley is 100% confirmed!!?!?!

No. Sometimes inside info is skewed or wrong. Things like this happen. Hell, for all we know this is all one huge misunderstanding and Jonneh was never trying to hint at anything.

And even then, Jonneh said this
So. . .there's that

And, for those wondering about anything Emily has said
https://www.resetera.com/posts/5571386/

My suggestion: Don't get too excited. We don't know what the future holds, and I would hope Ridley fans learned their lessons after what happened with Smash For and shadow analysis.

Movesets
Jabs: slashes with a claw, then with the other and finally both
Ftilt: Sweeps his big tail. although slow, it's strong and has impressive reach
Utilt: Ridley snaps his jaws straight upwards
Dtilt: Ridley swipes his claws at the ground
Dash Attack: Lunges at the enemy in a similar manner to DK's rolling dash attack
Usmash: Ridley's mouth bursts into flames and he bites upwards, anyone caught in his jaws then gets burned and launched
Fsmash: Flicks his tail sideways to jab the opponent, good reach and has a tipper
Dsmash: Leaps and swings his tail like in his Meta Ridley boss fight in Prime
Nair: Ridley extends his wings to attack horizontally
Fair: Ridley slashes with his claws
Bair: Ridley quickly bites behind him
Dair: Ridley jabs his tail right under him, although it has great range, it's laggy and doesn't spike
Grab: Ridley grabs the enemy with his foot
Pummel: Ridley squeezes his foot
Fthrow: Ridley spits a fireball which explodes in the foe's face, knocking them back
Bthrow: Ridley nonchalantly tosses the foe behind him and jabs with his tail for good measure, the throw has fixed knockback
Uthrow: Ridley latches on to the foe, flies upwards and flings them upwards
Dthrow: Ridley stomps his foe into the ground before jabbing with his tail and kicking the foe away
B: Charges a fireball and fires it. Holding the B button keeps the fireball in Ridley's mouth allowing him to readjust his aim by shifting up or down
Side B: Ridley rushes towards an enemy and grabs them, if on a stage, he drags them along the ground, if used in the air, he tosses them away in a slight downwards angle
Up B: Flight mode. Ridley uses his flight meter to fly around freely until the meter either runs out or Ridley interacts with the ground or a ledge or after a grab. While flying, Ridley can use his aerial moves to harass his enemies and also has an air grab, but after throwing someone he shifts momentum towards the direction he flew, but goes in a helpless state. When hit, Ridley reacts as he usually would, but takes extra damage. Flight Mode also makes him lighter and thus more vulnerable to meteor smashes/spikes
Down B: Armour, Ridley's skin hardens which gives him super armour during attacks, a Franklin Badge effect and a slight strength boost, but is drastically slowed down and weighed down to the point he can barely ascend during jumps of flight while needing to use more meter to fly. Pressing Down B again sheds the skin which bursts from Ridley's body in every direction
Final Smash: Omega Ridley, Ridley's body bursts into blue flames caused by Phazon while he screeches and turns into Omega Ridley. He's much larger in this state and functions similarly to Giga Bowser
Taunt 1: Smugly grins before flying in place and screeching loudly loudly
Taunt 2: Examines claws before grinning while having glowing eyes
Taunt 3: Grabs a capsule with the baby Metroid, sneers at it, then puts it away

Im just going to say it now.

I know this thread will certainly be rough.

But that doesn't mean discussion shouldn't happen.

It is possible to disagree on subjective matters without any issue.

RIP Zem's Essay OP.

Still support the Draconic Pirate Leader. Let's hope for a new title (Both Smash and a good Metroid) to really bolster his chances.

Eh, depending on the circumstances with Smash Switch, I may just wait for more polished versions of the PM mods to be ported on Smash Wii U (at least giving me another reason to still have the system) and call it a day. A Metroid that's a return to form would probably be even better though.

Ridley for life. Still support him.

But there's one important individual missing. And his name is Zem-raj Zem-raj . :3

He had to go to sleep early because of work tomorrow... Only know since I started playing some co-op games with him recently till he had to drop.
That's alright. He can rest when he needs to and work.

No need for him to be in a rush just to see the new Space Pirate hangout. It will be a big surprise to him either way.

I'm not a fan of the Metroid series' gameplay (though I do like the characters, lore, and music), so whilst I feel that I therefore can't contribute anything useful here, I'm just dropping in to make a note of my support for Ridley.

Smash has a lack of worthy foe-type villains (something that dangeraaron10 dangeraaron10 eloquently pointed out to me in a discussion elsewhere), and Ridley is most certainly one who I'd like to get the chance to pit myself against.

Best of luck, everyone!

Your guess is as good as mine
I think one of the main things against Ridley at this point is not so much size, it's more that he looks so... vicious. Like, he literally looks like the adult stage of an alien that popped out of my chest. Something like that might really go against the whimsical nature of the playable characters. Even characters like Ganondorf can have their goofy moments, but when I look into Ridleys soulless eyes I find it hard to imagine him getting flowered by a Lip's Stick or wildly swinging a hammer. Not impossible, just hard.

Despite all the personal life problems that came about from supporting him last game, I'll support him again this time. But at this point my expectations for him being in the game are as high as Battleborn getting popular again.

So, let the casual and disconnected support for the big 'ol purple space dragon begin!

I support Ridley 999%.

The guy should be first in line for a spot on the roster for Metroid reps.

RIP Zem's Essay OP.
Nah, it's okay. I've been thinking about it for a while, and it's probably best that I didn't open a Ridley thread. Between work, maintaining the Ridley campaign accounts via social media, the Makerfied series (which I've thought about possibly ending), and other commitments, I've got too much on my plate to handle at the moment. I'll post news and stuff on here whenever something comes up, if it's not already posted by others. In a way, I'm happy that A Distant Demon A Distant Demon handled it, plus he can mod the place too, so double bonus.

Ridley for life. Still support him.

I'm not really that important.

I'm just some guy on the internet who has a big enthusiasm and dedication to supporting the Metroid series' 2nd most important and iconic character.

Thanks :3

And it's certainly a surprise XD

A Distant Demon A Distant Demon , let me know if you need stuff for the OP, like alts, move set, etc, and I'll try and get back to you whenever I can with them. Plus I can post code for additional items for the appearances list whenever something new comes up. Oh, and we can talk about anything to do with Ridley, right (Including merchandise)?

Stuff like alts and stuff would be cool but no pressure.

Movesets would be a bit higher priority though since I'm too terrible at them to make one myself and making him work in someone's head could be helpful.

And yeah talking about RIdley merchandise would be fine.

I prefer his Other M design cos I still don't like his skinny neck in his other games. Looks like the poor guy is starving!

The dream, much like Ridley will not die!

Or it will die horribly and then come back form more, getting more messed up and insane each time. Also like Ridley.

This is Ridley we are talking about.

He rarely got much to eat after feasting on the Aran family (too soon).

While I may be not as much a Ridley supporter as I was before. I still hope that the dragon-space-pirate-reptile-cyborg-zombie-lord of cheating death can become one day a actual character. Not a cameo or a boss.
So yeah, I hope the best for you my friends.

xD And it isn't away from the truth, actually, since he only had Samus' mother to gobble up, her father blew himself up.
Now that's the Ridley comics that I miss.

Love how this is close enough to what he would say.

If Ridley is ok with it, then so am I.

Thanks for bringing back memories with these comics. :p
xD No problem! I can't deny the fact that I missed doing these when the opportunities arrived, and your comments was definitely one I couldn't let it flew pass me!

And in two more years Nintendo will celebrate it with a map pack for Federation Force 2. Hurrah for cynicism!
I'd might have to commit fandom suicide if it came to that. May have already if not for AM2R and some things, so please let's not go there. :(

Bright side, bright side, let's see...

Ridley Scott says he wants to make Alien movies forever.

http://screenrant.com/ridley-scott-alien-movies-future-forever/

Metroid may still have some real future yet!

Oh right, I completely forgot about AM2R for some reason, that was one of the best things ever I swear. The Hydro Complex (Area 2A in the soundtrack) is by far one of my favorite chill songs alongside Phendrana Drifts and Skytown. God I loved that game, so perfect imo....
