Just so this is archived, here are the list of characters zelda cannot grab while crouched. All characters not mentioned will get grabbed be zelda regardless of crouching.

Characters whom zelda can pivot grab, but not stand/dash grab:
  • Shiek
  • Kirby
  • G&W
  • Snake
  • Jigglypuff (can only pivot grab & zelda must not intersect w/ jiggs during any frames of start-up lag for pivot grab)
  • Samus in morph ball
  • Squirtle
Characters whom zelda has difficulty grabbing under....unusual conditions:
  • Marth (cannot standing grab while he is in d-tilt animation, otherwise all grabs work)
  • Wario (standing grab doesn't work when his crouched body model intersects w/ zelda, dash & pivot work)
  • Maio (see notes on Wario)
  • Ness (see notes on Wario)
  • Yoshi (standing grab has highly variable rates of success, only grabs when grab-box intersects w/ yoshi's eyes, also doesn't grab when yoshi is in the end lag of an aerial on the ground l-cancelled or not)
  • Lucario (similar to Yoshi, can only standing grab when grab-box intersects w/ lucario's ears/top of head, dash & pivot grab work)
  • Pikachu (failed standing grab 1/7 times, dash & pivot grab both work fine)
Personally I'm totally fine with each of these cases with the exceptions of Wario, Mario, Yoshi, Lucario, Pikachu, Marth (especially Marth, can someone explain if that's intentional and if so, why?), and Ness. I'd just like consistency in grabbing characters who aren't low crouching.

This also illustrates the importance of pivot grabbing. Despite the start-up time of moving the control stick once/twice & pressing z, the grab-box is big enough to grab everyone regardless of whether they're crouching or not.

For those who don't know, you can in fact pivot grab (pretty much) in place. If you wanna pivot grab in the direction you're currently facing, you hit the control stick in the opposite direction you're facing for 2 frames minimum, then immediately hit the control stick in the other direction & press z on the 3rd frame. If you wanna pivot grab in the opposite direction you're currently facing, see the last sentence, but switch the control stick directions in both instances. Quick example, you're facing right & you wanna "standing" pivot grab to the right, hit the control stick left for 2 frames then hit right on the control stick & z on the 3rd frame. Btw, hitting the control stick to the right & pressing z on the 2nd frame (somehow) instead of the 3rd frame will cause a standing grab (not hitting z will cause you to moonwalk).

Therefore, standing grab takes 8 frames to come out (but won't grab in those cases above), and a "standing" pivot grab will take 15 frames to come out. In defense of the higher frame time for the pivot grab, the pivot grab's hitbox is a bit bigger & further out. To add some perspective, samus's morph ball takes about 14 frames to travel from the pivot grab's outermost grab-box to zelda.

@ Kaeldiar Kaeldiar Got it. Revised the order for a more organized presentation based on common circumstances.

Btw, I'm tempted to post the Marth/Mario/Wario etc characters issues as bugs. Can anyone comment on the viability of this, whether they'd likely be classified as bugs vs intentional/accidental features, & how to report them (ie what material I need to present under the PM bug report thread)
