I would probably see about 65% to the whole roster returning as a lot of the characters are still somewhat relevant. Maybe the clones becoming alternate pallets swaps though.

As for Newcomers I would think since the game is coming out this year and we haven’t heard too much into the game yet, I would go with a solid 5 new characters that would help promote upcoming/recent games, 2 veterans, along with 1 Third Party:

3) Rex (Promotes Xenoblade Chronicles 2)

So I posted this in a thread a couple days ago. It's a roster cut all the way down to 34, including newcomers



The above roster could have up to 8 newcomers without getting too bloated, and my wishlist for what that could be is

• Inkling (Confirmed)
• Springman
• King K. Rool
• Another Mario character (captain toad? waluigi?)
• Black Shadow
• A gen 7 or 8 Pokemon
• The flavor-of-the-week Fire Emblem character
• The wildcard spot-- something either super new, kind of obscure, or perhaps even a third party (I'd want like, Gunvolt or Zero from MMX or something)

Since it has 6 extra spots as given by your OP, I'd probably go with


(perhaps taking away one of these to make a space for a newcomer)

My justification was to remove most of the characters that haven't been in since Melee, or ones that aren't particularly fan favorites/from relevant franchises. Also any instances of moveset clones were cut.

Most of the FE characters were cut because most of them were only included in the first place to advertise a recent game in the franchise.(also Literally half of them are Marth/his clones) Marth and Robin seemed like the best fit because Marth is the poster boy for the series, and Robin was kept because he's a really unique character from one of the most successful FE games in recent memory.

The Rayman trophy always makes me curious. I wonder if Sakurai had any plans of bringing him in? It seems a bit odd that a relatively bigger video game character like him, who was also third party, had nothing else to do with the game but a trophy.

Waluigi is a close runner-up, but I don't think he has quite enough personality of his own, past memes. The same could be said for Daisy, I suppose, though she at least has the sports games, notably Strikers, to design some moves around (Daisy seems to be the "Sports" Mario character, in fact). That being said, Nintendo has made a unique moveset for a fitness instructor, so I suppose anything's possible.

So, for the veterans these would be my picks:





Reworked:
Mario with Cappy, Link with a new moveset based on what he can do in BotW, Palutena to not be terrible, Ganondorf to be given just a few new moves to differentiate himself just a bit from Captain Falcon, Shulk's wonky hurtboxes fixed.
Zelda would also be given her BotW design, Ganondorf given his Hyrule Warriors design or one based on the Ganondorf spider nightmare in BotW and Wolf updated as well design wise.
