"VISUAL SHOCK! SPEED SHOCK! SOUND SHOCK!"

Ah, SEGA. One of gaming's most impactful and celebrated companies. Their output has an incredible depth and variety to it, ranging from long-standing classics to modern hits to cult favorites to interesting oddities. And yet all of it still has a distinctly "SEGA" touch to it. With such a deep and varied history, you kinda feel like just smashing it all together. And indeed, SEGA do that. A lot. They're constantly showing off their history in various little ways, ranging from albums to mini collections to anniversary stuff to, yes, crossovers in their own games. There have been plenty of small crossovers in SEGA's life, but something that fans always dream and speculate about is actual crossover games - of which there actually have been a few! Fighters Megamix, Project X Zone, and the All-Stars games are all notable examples of big crossover games either about SEGA or with major involvement from SEGA.

But there's one type of game.

One type of game that people have been clamoring for SEGA to make for a long time, and would serve as a perfect way of crossing stuff over more than anything else.

A crossover fighting game.

....Well, okay, Fighters Megamix was kinda that, but it was kinda just Virtua Fighter vs. Fighting Vipers + assorted AM2 guests and weirdos. And it was like 25 years ago. We're talking something that truly brings all of SEGA together! And we're recently seeing a boost in attention for crossover platform fighters, with NASB and Multiversus both gaining such a following that they have their own subforums on this very website. I do feel like SEGA have a strong enough catalogue for a game of this type. So we, the people of Smashboards, will be the ones to come up with the concept for such a game. We'll be tackling all forms of content, all in the name of seeing SEGA's greatest duke it out in a battle to be remembered.

We're well into the project at this point, but more people are always welcome! A big goal of this project is not just to put together a fun hypothetical, but to show people parts of SEGA's history that they might not be as exposed to. I feel that there's often a scope problem when considering the larger SEGA crossover potential, and a lot of people don't realize just how deep the pool of potential is. So, going into this project, try to keep an open mind! We're all united by our love of these games, and a big part of that is being open to finding out more about this stuff. So come on down! Help us out!

(Also if you ever plan on resubmitting someone else's submission, please ask the original poster for permission.)

NOTE: We're currently starting DLC up, but in the meantime, there's still some base game stuff left to do. So here's what yall can do to help us fill out our content:
-Submit more Capsule Toys/artwork/VMU RPG enemies. I'd recommend giving more attention to the series that have less of this content
-You can submit an Arcade Mode route for any character at any time. Please refer to the linked example above as to how to do them
-You can submit a reveal trailer for whatever character is currently lined up to get one! The one on our to-do list right now is......well, no one, really. Pick out whoever you want.
-Submit achievements or Mission Mode missions. We have a cap of 128 for the former, 50 for the latter

Before we start off anything, let's quickly cover our locked-in content:

-Sonic and Akira Yuki are locked in as characters: we will of course do movesets for them eventually

-Green Hill Zone is locked in as a stage: we'll eventually do a vote on which specific layout it'll have.

Now, for our first two jobs:

Job #1: Submit a roster number for this project

Let's just get this outta the way cause it's important: it'll help us put into perspective what we're working with, and it'll determine certain aspects of the roster, like how many reps certain series will get.

There's one big rule here: you can't go over 50. 50's the limit. 50's the max number. 50's the highest we can go, hell, you can just straight-up submit 50 if you want, but do keep in mind more aspects of the creation of this project than just "haha more characters!". I want y'all to really think this through and submit what you sincerely feel would be the best for this project.

Job #2: Submit a "classic" SEGA character and a "modern" SEGA character

OK, so our next two characters will each come from one of the two big halves of SEGA's video game history. To be clearer here: a "classic" character means one that was created before SEGA went third-party, and a "modern" character is one that was created afterwards. That event is what's gonna be the big splitting point here. Few things to keep in mind:

-The characters can't be from Sonic or Virtua Fighter, second reps for these series is our next character prompt after this one.

-There's an exception in the "classic vs. modern" criteria: any Atlus characters will still be considered modern even if they debuted before SEGA went third-party, on the technicality that they only became SEGA characters long after that event. This likely won't apply to future submissions in which they're on the table.

-This is important: for now, I'm gonna need y'all to focus on the more popular "mainstay" characters/series. Save your weird picks for later, they'll have their time in the sun eventually, but for now, what we need is a strong foundation to build upon: and I don't think we'll exactly manage that if one of our very first characters is Wild Woody.

After these prompts are done with, we'll cover some gameplay details. Alright, that should be everything, so uhhhhh....submit away!

Sorry Billy Hatcher, you'll have to wait until later. ;(

JOB #1: Roster Number

So, honestly, maybe about 35. I feel like that's the perfect roster that's between the point of just characters for quantity and well, quality characters.

JOB #2: Classic's and Modern's!

A pretty simple one.

The Classic: Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo)

One of the more popular picks, Arle from the Puyo Puyo series! What can I say? The franchise is an iconic puzzle game, starring Arle, a pretty cool character, and the face of the series! This is a no-brainer for me!

The Modern: Kiryu (Yakuza)

I'll admit, haven't played the Yakuza series yet, but the series is more than deserving of a fighter, and in my opinion, Kiryu! The series looks pretty fun, so I'll check it out at some point. Kiryu's my modern pick.

I am not well-versed in Sega properties, and I am not sure what would constitute "mainstay," so unfortunately, the only suggestion I could make with reasonable confidence to their importance is Alex Kidd, and that is only because I heard that he was once the Sega mascot. As far as roster size goes, I cannot give a well-educated recommendation. In fact, I do not think I have enough knowledge of the Sega console, games, and characters to post anything more than this for the moment.

Job #2 Classic: Beat
1618169008525.png

Beat is the overall protagonist of Jet Set Radio, a 17-year-old who loves to skate and one of the founders of the "GG's." Beat is always there to make cameos in SEGA games, being one of the 16 characters from SEGA Tennis and one of the first 8 series originally in SEGA Heroes which in my opinion makes him more valid to be one of the starting cast than Akira Yuki. Beat even has legacy, being one of the first games with cel-shaded graphics. Beat would be a fast, lightweight character that uses Graffiti cans and possibly other skating moves and can kick with skates

Job #2 Modern: Makoto Yuki
1618169050597.png

Makoto Yuki is the protagonist of Persona 3, the most innovative game in the series for basically being the groundwork for the future Persona games (stuff like social links and time progression were introduced here). But why him over the other Persona protagonists, well because a lot of the fans think Persona 3 was the best in the series and the other protagonists have been milked and appeared everywhere else. But mainly, it's because his hair and the thematic color of the game is blue

So this kinda thing is why I wanted to establish a more relaxed tone with things like longer submission periods: I want to stress here that I want to give you guys some time to just snoop around a little and do some SEGA research. Obviously if you don't feel like submitting, you're free to not do that, just clarifying here that if you want to contribute but feel like you don't have enough knowledge, there's time for y'all to go read up on some SEGA franchises a little.

Also, what I meant by "mainstays" is basically:

A. longer-running and more popular franchises

or

B. characters that have generally made themselves more well-known or visible in some form or another

Basically what I was trying to say in the OG post was "no obscure picks just yet"

One last thing: do you want me to put Alex Kidd in as your submission or do we wait for someone to make a more formal and concrete case for him?

which in my opinion makes him more valid to be one of the starting cast than Akira Yuki.
aight I gotta defend myself here for a sec

Basically, reasons I had Akira as one of the two locked-in characters:

-it's SEGA's biggest fighting game series and this is a SEGA crossover fighting game, ya do the math

-Emphasis on "biggest" there: cause Virtua Fighter is pretty ****in big among SEGA's IP sphere: it has 5 mainline games to its name, it's super duper popular in Japan apparently, and there's a number of people absolutely clamoring for it to come back. Among SEGA's library of series, VF undeniably stands out as a big one, if you ask me.

So das basically it: Akira is a fighting game character already, and VF is big enough that it was very likely to eventually get voted in anyways so I decided to just get it out of the way. I don't mean to **** on Beat here, far from it, just felt like I needed to explain why I decided to establish Akira as second highest priority after Sonic.

I guess that's fair, and I agree Akira should be second priority (I just said that as a throwaway joke), but I just don't get the part highlighted here.

I guess it's okay to get him out of the way, but I still don't see a solid reason as to just him. Kiryu, Beat, Bayonetta, Aiai, etc. I feel could also fall into this. It's like making a smash bros. game locking in Mario and Link, and having people submit and vote on Kirby, like of course Kirby is getting in why do we have to submit and vote on him but Link is already in?

You do make a fair point. I'll concede that there's other characters worthy of "getting out of the way", that one's on me

I suppose what I was trying to get at in the end is that to me, Akira just felt like the most obvious pick after Sonic: combined with the fact that I did want to "start small" so that we could have more time to sorta get into the groove of this project so I didn't want to immediately have, like, 8-10 locked-in characters.

I wanted to start off with 2 characters and after Sonic, my mind just went to Akira. 'Das it.

Job 2:

Classic Sega character: Axel Stone

Axel Stone is from the Streets of Rage series, one of Sega's more popular Genesis era series, and one that also recently had a revival. He's also from a beat-em-up, which means he would translate well into a fighting game.

Modern Sega character: Aiai

Aiai is from the Super Monkey Ball series, a series that is relatively active and has a strong fanbase. His moveset might not come as easily as some other options, but basing a moveset around rolling around in a ball is an interesting idea.

The classic: Alex Kidd

Alex-Kidd.png

Alex Kidd, pictured here in his modern remake look(coming out this year) was the mascot of Sega's pre-Sonic days.

Alex has a variety of different abilities from punching rocks to his motorcycle and helicopter but is probably best known for his rock-paper-scissors battles.

For the longest time Alex was pushed to the side, but he did get to reappear in Sonic and Sega All Star Tennis, and he's getting a remake this year!

Fun fact: Alex Kidd was the first video game character I played. Yes, I am that old.

The New: Billy Hatcher
Billy-Hatcher.png

Labelling Billy Hatcher as new is an odd thing considering his game is over 17 years old now, but here we are!

Billy Hatcher was a platformer game with a unique egg rolling gimmick. He was heavily promoted in Sega crossovers for a long time despite there never being a sequel to his game, crossing over repeatedly with Sonic in various racing games and even on Playstation's Eye-toy.

Time for him to (egg) roll his competition over.

Job 1: 33. We have to be reasonable, but also have a decent amount of characters. I think 33 is fine. Why 33? I dunno I just think the number sounds good

Job 2: Ryo (Shenmue series)
Image result for ryo shenmue

Shenmue is a beloved cult classic Sega series, and the protagonist Ryo has already appeared in a lot of Sega crossovers, showing Sega sees him as one of their biggest characters. Anyways, Ryo would fight sorta similarly to Akira (Given Shenmue was once a Virtua Fighter RPG) but he would still be pretty unique.

Claude (Valkyria Chronicles 4)

Image result for valkyria chronicles 4 claude

I barely know anything about Valkyria Chronicles, but I think it looks like a really good series and would like to try it. Anyways, Claude is the main character in the most recent game, and so I think he would act as a good rep for the series. In his home series, he uses realistic guns and his series is very warfare-centric which would set him apart from the other Sega characters

First of all: Thanks Speed Weed Speed Weed for making this thread. I've been wanting to create something like this for a while but was too intimidated by the amount of work it requires and the other game creation threads. Not sure about the others, but I think Akira makes perfect sense as a second lock character after Sonic, the guy is THE fighting character of SEGA. One criticism I might have is maybe the title is a bit too joke-y? I know this isn't going to be something particularly serious but I was almost going to skip it because the SEGA part is not very obvious at first glance. Just a minor nitpick.

Anyway, I hope this will be a fun place to talk about SEGA properties other than the usual suspects. Onward with the jobs!

Job #1: I'll go with 35, really no other reason than first All-Stars racing had 25, and Transformed had 30 characters. Another 5 character increase seemed reasonable, even if we're dealing with completely different genres.

Job #2:

Classic:
I'm not too well-versed in old-school SEGA properties but I'll go with Sakura Shinguji:

1618208872755.png

I know, new Sakura Wars was also pretty successful and Sakura of that game would also be a nice addition to the roster but if we're going with heavy hitters, classic Sakura is kind of a must-have. Her games were some of the SEGA's biggest back then and she's still has a large fandom to her name. I imagine she'll mostly use her sword Arataka to attack but can occasionally summon her Koubu to her aid.

Modern: This isn't going to be a surprise for anyone who knows me but here's a witch who needs no introduction:

1618209758219.png

I was going with Persona but figured Bayonetta would turn more heads after her third game's radio silence. I adore Bayonetta and I think she's a great fit for SEGA's "cooler" set of characters compared to Smash. She has a dedicated cult following and proved herself capable of appearing in family-friendly games. Depending on the control scheme we use, she can make use of her transformation and climax skills that are absent from Smash.

As a guy with the Persona 3 protag avatar: Yes, a lot of fans think P3 is the best in the series, but you can say the same for literally every mainline game maybe except Eternal Punishment. And trust me, ATLUS milked P3 plenty, it's just most of the spin-offs and adaptations it got flew under people's radars. Don't get me wrong, I love the character and would love to see him in here, just putting my two cents in.

The jokey title is prolly going away as soon as we decide on the game's name

Which isn't that far ahead. After this prompt is done with, we'll do a vote on the KO system and some form of other gameplay shake-up, and after that is when we decide on the title.

I lied, the jokey title is going away NOW

Anyway, might as well throw in my own submissions:

Classic Character: Alis Landale from Phantasy Star
Alis_landale_alt_profile.png

Aight, so like, Phantasy Star is a classic series. It's been around since the 80s, the old straightforward RPG part of the series consists of some of the best-remembered first-party Master System and Mega Drive titles, and the other side of the franchise - Phantasy Star Online - is successful as **** and is still going strong, in fact!

And Alis is the protagonist of the very first game, and I'd honestly call her a very strong contender for the most iconic character in the series - for all intents and purposes, she's more or less the Marth of Phantasy Star. And on a somewhat related note, I'd say she'd also be a pretty good fit for the "basic swordsman" archetype of this game, with some magic thrown in there as well.

Modern Character: Joker from Persona 5
500px-Joker_SSBU.png

.....What do you want me to say?

Like, honestly, what is there to say that hasn't already been said? You know why he's here. We are in a board revolving around a game in which he is already playable.

Honestly I kinda just wanted to get him out of the way. I don't like Persona 5 nearly as much as I used to, but regardless of my own personal feelings, he is a character worthy of inclusion.

Also all the modern SEGA characters I actually care about have either already been submitted or wouldn't make for very good "starter" characters IMO

Job 1: 40. Nice round number.
JOB 2
Classic Character: RISTAR

Look at his smug smile. His cool shoes. His rad, extendable arms. Ristar is the best Sega character. Not accepting any other opinions. He'd be a long range grappler who really falls flat up close, but can keep the pressure on his opponents once he gets his distance.
As for how he meets the requirements, he definitely fits the bill as "classic", since he never left his debut console, the Sega Genesis. And I wouldn't consider him weird or one-off, as he's made appearances in many rereleases of his game.

Modern Character: HATSUNE MIKU

NGL, I was halfway through writing an Ulala submission and made a comparison to Hatsune Miku before thinking-"wait. Isn't Miku owned by Sega?"
Well, I did my research, and the answer is...kind of? Sega makes and owns the games, but Crypton Future Media owns and licenses the character. But it couldn't hurt to try and submit Miku-if it gets rejected, I'll go back to Ulala and edit this post.
Miku needs no introduction. Being the most popular pop singer that doesn't exist, Miku is a pioneer of vocaloid singers who-while technically is not a character of video game origin-is the closest to a video game character you can get. Plus, this game-as far as I'm aware-isn't held to the same restrictions as Nintendo's Smash Bros, so characters of non-game origin are acceptable or at least up for debate.
Anyways, it goes without saying that Miku being in a Sega Smash Bros-alongside Sonic and Akira-would break the internet, possibly even more than Steve's Smash inclusion. I could see Miku having a really fun and unique rhythm game-inspired moveset (though we would obviously make it distinct from Infinite's own rhythm game rep).
And I would definitely say Miku is a modern character, as Project Diva released in 2009 and Miku is extremely relevant to this day.

OK, Miku is.....weird. Generally, I wouldn't allow characters that technically aren't owned by SEGA in this project, but considering how strong the connections are and the fact that this project is barely getting started anyways so we're all kinda learning here, I'll let it slide just this one time.

Also worth noting: I'm planning on doing a guest character vote as one of our very last character prompts and I'd say characters that feel like "honorary SEGA characters" would be preferrable when that time comes, and Miku would fit that bill like a glove!

oh and you couldn't have aubmitted Ulala for the modern spot anyway cause she debuted in the Dreamcast era and therefore wouldn't have counted as a modern character

Well fellas, roster number submissions are CLOSED. Please refer to the poll above to drop in your vote for the epic number of characters that'll make this game up.

Character submissions are going on for 24 more hours, give or take. I could end it now seeing as it's definitely slowed down, but I want to keep the door open for any last-minute submissions.

But I've got one more thing to keep us busy in all this....

Job #3: Submit a title for this game

....That's basically it. Just come up with a potential name for this game. Which we'll then vote on. That's all.

Lets go with that. For some reason SEGA usually puts "Sonic &" in their crossover game titles so I just went with that.

Job #3: SEGA All-Stars Fighter SEGA Fighters

Figured I might as well mix All-Stars games with Fighters Megamix. Not sure if it sounds good or is marketable but I think it sums up the game well enough. I didn't want to add a "Sonic&" before I know how many Sonic characters we'll have.

EDIT: Decided to change my suggestion. This one is a bit shorter and takes from SEGA Heroes while still being reminiscent of Fighters Megamix.

Job 3:

I'm with Janx_uwu Janx_uwu on not being a big fan of the "Sega All Stars"/"Sonic & Sega All Stars" naming convention.
However I think the word 'Sega' still needs to be in there, even if it's just adding Sega to the front of their suggestion (Sega: Battle of Ages or Sega Battle of Ages or something), to really drive the Sega part home. I know there's Sega Ages but I think that connection is a little too loose without the company title.

Sega Smackdown was my first thought, but I think 'Smackdown' as a word might still be copyright property of WWE despite now being added to the Webster dictionary.

Obviously this isn't a real game, but it'd probably be best to avoid for that reason.

Sega DreamBlast is a terrible pun based off the console they had, but it's the best I've got to try and get across that this is a dream crossover game that revolves around both battling and Sega characters. That's my submission I guess.

Opa-Opa (Fantasy Zone)
pngkey.com-sega-png-883069.png

I don't have anything in mind for a modern rep now, but I'm a big retro/classic game fan and Opa-Opa seems to fit as he was one of SEGA's old mascots (alongside Alex Kidd) and Fantasy Zone had a big impact for not only just them, but also a gaming history such as being one of the first cute 'em ups besides Konami's TwinBee.

He has moveset potential such as using his wings and feet to attack opponents, usage of many weapons and a shop gimmick, which are all in a Google document on this thread.

Job #2: SEGA characters

Well, all my ideas have already been submitted so far lol. But it doesn't hurt to widen the pool of possibilities.

Classic Character: Ulala

Ulala is the main protagonist of the Space Channel 5 series. She is a futuristic reporter that leads Channel 5 as well as the star of Ulala’s Swinging Report Show. When an alien race called the Morolians begin attacking, Ulala simultaneously reports on the events, fights off the threat, and fights against rival reporters as well. Though after some time she finds out the invasion had been staged by Space Channel 5 boss Chief Blank to drive up ratings for the channel. With help from fellow reporters and support from her fans, Ulala defeats Blank in the end. Her games are of the rhythm genre and her moveset could have some rhythm mechanic. She is an important piece of Dreamcast History that shouldn't be ignored.

Modern Character: Ichiban Kasuga

Alright I'm well aware Kiryu has already been submitted but let me shill my favourite SEGA Series in peace. Ichiban Kasuga is the main character of the newest Yakuza installment: Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Albeit not as iconic as Kiryu, he's the newest and most relevant protagonist of the series. Above that, he has already been proven to be a fan-favourite among the fanbase. With his extrovert attitude and the turn-based gameplay of his game, he would work differently from Kiryu and prove that he himself has unique things to bring to the table. C'mon look at this goofy dude, he just has to get in at one point.

WELL

Da poll is over. And with that, we have a winner: our roster number is going to be 35 characters!!!!

Do keep this in mind, cause some of the series rep numbers would scale to the roster size. For example, Sonic is planned to probably have, like, 4 reps, but had the roster number gone any lower, it would have dropped down to 3.

For reference, here's more or less what I'm planning on with this roster size:

-4 Sonic reps
-3 Virtua Fighter reps
-2 reps for, like, 3-5 series we'll do votes on later
-Rest of the roster filled out by standalone series reps

It might be subject to a little change in the future, but it's what we got for now.

With that out of the way, our first character submission period has finally been closed. It's time to vote on them, bois.

We'll be employing the ranked voting system from other projects in this vein: first place gets 3 points, second place gets 2 points, and last place gets 1 point. You can only put your own submission in last place.

Here's the candidates:

Classic Characters
Arle Nadja ( TheThingamajigRayman TheThingamajigRayman )
Beat ( CheeseAnton CheeseAnton )
Axel Stone ( Otoad64 Otoad64 )
Alex Kidd ( YoshiandToad YoshiandToad )
Ryo Hazuki ( Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule )
Sakura Shinguji ( osby osby )
Ristar ( Janx_uwu Janx_uwu )
Opa-Opa ( tonygameman tonygameman )
Ulala ( Mr. Robotto Mr. Robotto )
Alis Landale (meeeeeeeeeee)

Modern Characters
Kazuma Kiryu ( TheThingamajigRayman TheThingamajigRayman )
Makoto Yuki ( CheeseAnton CheeseAnton )
AiAi ( Otoad64 Otoad64 )
Billy Hatcher ( YoshiandToad YoshiandToad )
Claude ( Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule )
Bayonetta ( osby osby )
Joker (meeeeeeeeee)
Hatsune Miku ( Janx_uwu Janx_uwu )
Ichiban Kasuga ( Mr. Robotto Mr. Robotto )

Do keep in mind that these'll be the very first characters along with Sonic and Akira: and a strong start can benefit us a lot in the long run. So at least for now, try to focus on who you feel is highest-priority.

One last thing: I'll be changing the poll - gonna try and experiment with condensing part of some of the gameplay votes into the poll format

Modern:

3. Hatsune Miku

Classic was particularly hard to choose because I feel like all of them kind of deserve a roster spot.

CLASSIC:
1. Alex Kidd
Former SEGA mascot.
2. Beat
Never played Jet Set, but he sticks out as an icon during the Dreamcast era.
3. Arle Nadja
Puyo Puyo is cool.
MODERN:
1. Billy Hatcher
Glad someone else submitted him, lol. I didn't think we could submit obscure-ish characters, so yeah. Number one modern pick.
2. AiAi
I like Monkey Ball. Monkey Ball's cool.
3. Kiryu
Yakuza's one of SEGA's latest successful franchises.

Classic:
1. Alex Kidd
2. Opa-Opa
3. Axel Stone (as much as I want him, it would feel weird on having two human brawlers win at the start of a project when we have Akira, like Janx said)

Modern:
1. Kazuma Kiryu (still would prefer him as one of the starters)
2. Billy Hatcher
3. AiAi
