Project no.16: Fox Throws Optimization

Provided by the Fox Discord Lab Team

Fox uses his throws primarily for getting an advantageous position that can potentially lead into a combo or follow up. Except for rare cases Fox's Throws don't have true combos directly from them and the throw that kills earlier is FThrow at around 200% at the ledge (depending on which stage)

DThrow
DThrow is Fox's most used throw as it leaves the opponent in a pretty bad position can can lead into some damage moves if you can get the right read at low percent.
When to use:
- low percent, center stage/facing canter stage
- high percent, ledge (in case of wrong DI and airdodge read)
- under some platforms for tech chase/missed tech
Correct DI

With the right DI DThrow doesnt true combo into anything, it still gives Fox some options:

- RAR Bair
This is a really common option, if landed it can lead into a regrab or Dash attack.

- SH Fair drag down
This rarely works cause it can be avoided by jumping, airdodging or even attacking. If it lands it can lead into a Ftilt jab lock

- FH Fair
This instead can catch a Double Jump and also true combo into UAir. On stages like Battlefield, a buffered FH Fair can also Autocancel on the platforms being a not so hard commitment.

- Dash Shield
This option can be used if an attack gets read (especially at lower percentage), often followed by an option OOS.

Wrong DI

With the wrong DI DThrow can combo into UAir or setup for airdodge reads offstage.
You can try to condition your opponent to DI badly using other Throws during the game or sometimes cause he would fear an FThrow at the ledge and instinctively DI towards the stage.

- Uair
This can lead to Uair strings.

- Fair to footstool (at ledge higher %)
This can lead to a kill.

Situational Uses
- SmashVille Platform
On the SV Platform Fox can true combo UAir at kill percent if done while facing the same direction the platform is moving.

- Forcing Tech on Platforms
At some percentages Fox can create a tech situation on platforms like the lower ones on Battlefield, if missed it can lead to a jab lock (any %) using the middle hitboxes of a SH DAir. (it can also be jumped out by most of the cast, works the best on fast fallers)

FThrow
FThrow is mostly used at mid-percentage to force a tech and get some possible followups thanks to its speed and angle making it not too easy to react. It can also kill at really high percentage from the ledge or at a more decent percent from the SV platform.
When to use:
- mid percent, facing center stage or a good part of it
- high percent, at the ledge
- very high percent, at the ledge
The mid percentage usages and possible combos are already explained in a post from S-Critical: Click here to read

At higher percentage, this throw serves only as a positioning tool allowing you to send the opponent offstage if grabbed at the ledge. Not really recommended while facing the stage since the opponent has a variety of options to avoid pretty much everything and there are better options.

UThrow
UThrow is used especially in certain MUs or at the start of the game in particular conditions.
This Throw forces the opponent into the air and so they now have to land, some characters like Little Mac and Ryu (just to mention some) particularly don't like this as they have bad landing options and/or Fox's UAir counters them.
When to use:
- low percent, under the higher platform in BF/DL64
- center stage, to force landing
- Dair Jablock on higher plat (BF/DL64)
As shown in another lab project, available in the Fox Discord (#lab_projects channel), Fox can jab lock an opponent after UThrowing him to the higher platform from the ground. The percentages for the throw to send onto that platform are listed in this doc: Click here to open

BThrow
BThrow is used to either condition your opponent to do a wrong DI for later uses or to setup some tech situations on platforms like in SV or BF. Some characters in particular are more vulnerable to this due to fast fall proprieties and/or hurtboxes. It also depends on DI but being an uncommon option (other than being the opposite of DThrow) its often done wrong. In some cases it can send to a situation where a read of a Jump can lead to a kill with UAir.
When to use:
- low percent, force tech/conditioning for later
- mid percent, force tech on platforms
- high percent, jump read
- on Lylat in a particular moment
This Throw is probably one of the most underused in Fox's kit since its use is based on mindgames.
Due to its angle, Fox can often catch some DJ using a FH UAir while airdodging could lead to having landing lag on a platform.
On Lylat in particular this Throw can be used from the bottom part while tilted at the maximum angle to force a tech untill really high percentages.
