There's NOTHING special about January 7th. There wasn't a special update for any of the other SPECIAL holidays. Not even Christmas. Why would they choose January 7th for a big MAJOR update?
I'm glad I'm not the only one getting tired of these stupid update speculation threads. I'll be glad when the 24th comes around if not for the sole fact that people will stop speculating about crap that has no significance...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the update on January 7 won't be anything spectacular, and it's not only because Sakurai doesn't care for "special" days. A lot of the average updates are being made because of the game's delay, since now they have to provide even more material for a longer amount of time while keeping some of the content hidden for the release. The week hiatus might have as much to do with holiday reasons as it does the fact that they're running out of things to reveal while keeping other stuff secret.
