Ivysaur is one of my mains in Project M but even when I play it I feel like there's so much more I could do. I was wondering if anyone here has any tips or tricks they'd like to pass on.

Pretty much what was said above. Zone them out with back airs and projectiles. Make sure to SHFFL everything, as Ivy is most vulnerable in landing/aerial animations. If they get too close, throw out a nair, or spot dodge > grab. When the opponent is offstage, and has a recovery that is beneficial for them to snap (almost everyone), use a well-timed down smash to send them out and at a negative angle so that they can't come back. Use that time to charge solar beam.

Learn to sweetspot fair. Whether they're above you, in front of you, beneath you, you should be able to get that snappy 13%. From there you can spam it pretty hard imo

As Papa said above, Ivy can be played either defensively or offensively. Some people prefer to play lame, others like a more aggressive approach. Both work well, it's up to you how to do it. If you play more aggressively though, it's obviously easier to overextend and lose your good spacing and get punished for it. Just something to keep in mind.

@ I it's Papa Yeah, we actually have played. Before I switched back to Ivy though, I played as Pit for a while in 3.02 (it was a dark time.) and I played you a couple rounds at Shuffle V. I was real bad, still am pretty bad though haha. I'm Graham in the Facebook group. If you're down I'd love to play some friendlies at Shuffle next weekend! I'd appreciate any advice you'd have.

This is not at all how high level Ivy is being played at the moment. Optimal Ivy seems to be trending toward a balance of aggro and defense; watch JZ and Machiavelli.
I play with JZ like weekly lol. If you can't see how safe he plays you're not paying atention.

^ Do you guys record anything ?

Yeah that's what I've been saying, glad I'm not crazy. People focus on how crazy he rushes in with fairs all the time but he wouldn't be able to do that if he didn't do retreating chicken bairs to create the distance he needs just as often. And vice versa : he wouldn't be able to do retreating bairs as often if he didn't claim so much ground with his fairs.
It's not a balance between offense and defense, it's more like a pendulum. You have to be able to execute both perfectly and switch it up consistently imo.

feeling the same way about Messi and the Snake community ;)

I'll have a recording setup soon, and hopefully Sol figures out his internet and **** so the mass of videos he's got can be uploaded. Meanwhile Lordy gets them up pretty regularly. KZOO is also capable of streaming so there's that too. Grand Valley also has equipment, albeit quite a bit worse stream-wise from what I've seen. x5 recording setups all present at a tournament would be pretty godlike, though. Here's the relevant twitch pages:
twitch.tv/zerotodeath (ZTD/Solharath's stream)
twitch.tv/kzoosmash (KZOO stream)
twitch.tv/grandvalleysmash (GV stream)
twitch.tv/cisyphus (my stream)

I don't know if Lordy has a twitch stream at all, but his youtube is a good place to look for videos. There's been some chaos in west MI recently but we've settled things pretty cleanly and hopefully will have some footage to show soon :)

OH we do have these:

yesss, you rule for posting that JZ vs. Dirtboy set. There are going to be so many good Squirtles at Shuffle this weekend and I've been looking all over for good study material.

Oh thanks a lot for those mate.
Next time you meet up with JZ ask him if he has Skype and if he wants to get in the Ivy skype group. We'd love to have him in. He's the only missing relevant Ivy main lol, unless there are more hidden bosses we don't know about (I heard there was a good Ivy in Melbourne yesterday)

My Ivysaur isn't bad ;) lol. Beats the non-PR West MI crew every so often. Naturally I'm more dedicated to my main so I don't really wanna refine a secondary like that. I'll let him know though ^^

lf she can play both aggro and defensively, then l feel that a knowledge of when to switch modes would be really good to know. Personally, l like to lame it out until l get a notable string off of some stupid mistake the opponent made and then l push in on them from there.
