<p align="center">Well ever since Lucas was announced, it fueled the fires of speculation that Sakurai would be doing what he planned for Melee: Remove Ness and replace him with Lucas. People held on to the chance that Lucas was just a new character as Ness had been in the previous 2 games and become popular, and the fact that Lucas seemed to have moves that weren’t like Ness’ . Unfortunately, todays update, Lucas’ Special Moves, also contained this statement from Sakurai.</p>

<blockquote>
<p align="center">There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now.</p>
</blockquote>
<p align="center">So long Ness, I hardly knew ye…</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/ness.jpg" alt="This games retiring character is....Ness!" /></p>

<p align="center">Anyway, to the future! While Lucas may look rather similar to Ness, his moves are diferent. Some barely, others completly changed. First off, “Normal” attacks.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Up Smash Attack</strong>: Psychic powered flip kick with some nice range.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108a-l.jpg" alt="Seems Blathers and his relative aren't impressed" /></p>
<p align="center"><strong>Down Special Attack</strong>: A “Barrage of PSI” in a way similar Mewtwo’s Down Smash.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108b-l.jpg" alt="Lucas hates ants." /></p>
<p align="center"><strong>Back Air</strong>This attack is similar to Ness’ except that the last part is a Meteyor Attack, knocking foes downwards.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108c-l.jpg" alt="Fox falls into Lucus' trap: PK fart." /></p>
<p align="center">Thought he wasn’t buffed enough? There’s more.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Tether Recovery</strong></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108d-l.jpg" alt="I almost did a You-Know-What on a You-Know-Where joke. *whew*" /></p>
<p align="center">In the games, the Rope Snake was used to grab people. It would be a safe bet that this is Lucas’ grab, and like Samus and Link, can be used to recover, which is good, because his UP Special is still….</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Up Special:</strong> PK Thunder</p>
<p align="center">It’s the same as before. You shoot out a fly-by-wire controled ball of lightning which can be used to hit other people, but also yourself, of which doing so….</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108i-l.jpg" alt="Watch out for his Thunder Balls" /></p>
<p align="center">Kaboom!</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108j-l.jpg" alt="Another screen of PK Fart" /></p>
<p align="center">Looks like it might be longer than Melee, and has a more explosive animation.</p>

<p align="center"><strong>Forward Special</strong> PK Fire
Yep, it’s back, though diferent. In previous games, PK fire went diagonally downwards when used in the air, but now it flies horizontally instead.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108e-l.jpg" alt="The failed Kamehameha wave" /></p>
<p align="center">Effect’s more spectacular though.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108f-l.jpg" alt="and that's why Sonic doesn't have any children." /></p>

<p align="center"><strong>Neutral Special:</strong> PK Freeze
So long PK Flash, you useless move. It was slow, easy to be dodged, and generally one of the more worse skills in the game. Wether PK Freeze is as slow and useless is unknown as yet, though it does seem similar except for the fact that instead of just doing damage, this freezes them in chunks of ice, like Freezie.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108g-l.jpg" alt="Try and catch that snowflake on your tounge." /></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108h-l.jpg" alt="Instant Ice Sculpture!" /></p>
<p align="center"><strong>Down Special</strong> Another one straight from Ness, this shield absorbes most enemy projectiles and recovers HP. Of note is it seems that it doesn’t cover him entirely like Ness was.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/lucas_071108k-l.jpg" alt="Only 1 joke about lucas' balls per update, sorry." /></p>

Saying up until now doesn't mean anything, he's saying so far, Ness has a chance because Lucas looks very Luigi-fied

Two things:

1) The choice to make the PK Fire a billboard again didn't turn out too well (see the edges). I mean, come on, surely they've heard of anti-aliasing?

2) If Pokémon Trainer uses his Final Smash, what would happen exactly when Lucas Psi Magnets this attack? Massive recharge?

Right behind you with a knife.
No, the wording "Up until now" does deconfirm. It's not vauge at all either. Up until Brawl, Ness was a playable character, but in Brawl he isn't. If Ness really was in, even with the simmilar moves, Sakurai would just not have mentioned Ness at all.

Very true, and if he is in and has the exact same moveset, I'm not getting this game. I don't want 2 people with the same moveset, with the exception of luigi, though he could get a few different moves.

If Ness isn't coming back, Sakurai wouldn't have mentioned him on the update.

You could say that Sakurai let the cat out of the bag when he said Ness.

Ness's chances look a whole lot worse after today's update, but there's still a slight chance that he'll be included in Brawl ... we'll know around February (after the Japanese gamers have had their hands on it for a while.) Sakurai is tricky enough to do whatever he wants with us and all our speculation, lol.

Regardless, I don't think we'll be seeing any kind of Ness-related news on the Dojo. He was unlockable in 64 and Melee and if (however slim a chance it might now be) he happens to be in Brawl, then I think he'll be an unlockable character.

For now, I'm acting under the belief that Ness is NOT in Brawl so that I'm not disappointed when we have the game in our hands ... and if he DOES slip back into the cast, what a pleasant surprise it will be! :)

Well at least we know that Ness is absent in Brawl. It really is better than having two very similar characters. On the bright side Lucas looks alot cooler than Ness

Boy, this update sure is leading to serious debates. If people are saying that Ness is gone, you can forget about Luigi since he's a semi-clone of Mario.

If Sakurai said ""There’s a character named Luigi who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now" I would say he's gone too.

Quote from smashbros dojo: "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar. They are from the same family of PK users".
You are over-analyzing the ENGLISH Translated text.

Take a look at the French translated Text;
Vous connaissiez Ness depuis son apparition dans la série Smash Bros, vous allez donc vite adopter Lucas, qui lui ressemble beaucoup. Ils appartiennent à la même famille de personnages PK.

You've known Ness since his appearance in the Smash Bros series, so you'll quickly adopt Lucas, who resembles him a lot. They belong to the same family of PK people.

This was also posted by .Yoshi in another thread. He translated the Japanese text which is the best text to refrence;

By the way to those using the "up until now" as proof:
いままで (ima made) = "until now, so far, up to the present"
eg. "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series so far, and Lucas is very similar."

Honestly, no one will know until they unlock all the characters and find out Ness isn't there.

Hopefully he doesn't say that, Luigi has a pretty good chance to be in, and it looks like the Luigi's mansion stage is in the Fall 2007 movie...

A) Yes, Ness is cool, but if he doesn't make it into Brawl, it's nothing to cry about. They're completely different games.

B) Sakurai knows better than to do anything even close to taking Luigi out. That would be probably the worst move he could make.

C) I'm really looking forward to this game, and if you were a fan of either of the others, you should be, too; you shouldn't say, "Oh noes they took ____ away" or "I don 't like the physics" or whatever. Instead, say, "Wow, this game looks impressive, and so do all the new things they're adding. I suppose if they're taking something old out, they're doing it for a reason." And even if it's a mistake to take something out, they'll put it back in the next installment (Individual entrance animations, the bumper, etc.).

So basically, quit crying.

lol Are you serious? Luigi is WAY! more popular than Ness and with that Masahiro Sakurai and Shigeru Miyamoto are good buddies plus I remember seeing somewhere that Shigeru Miyamoto is helping Sakurai a little bit on Brawl....lol Luigi is going to Brawl.....

Oh yeah and the Nintendo rep spilled the beans on Luigi to.....:)

Are you seriously doubting the work of a professional paid english translator?

いままで (ima made) = "until now, so far, up to the present"
eg. "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series so far, and Lucas is very similar."

It's an EASY slip-up. ima made can mean three different meanings in english, and when read by a bunch of Smash Bros extremist (read: us) it can have a completely different meaning.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if Lucas replaced Ness and Ness got the axe. But what I do care is when people take things to an extreme as we always do, that is when problems and other things can arise.

I'm just saying, don't be surprised if Ness is the update tomorrow, followed by a caption by Sakurai saying "Did you actually think he was gone?"

Let's help out with the German translation: In der Smash Bros.-Serie ist bislang ein Charakter namens Ness aufgetreten. Lucas ähnelt ihm sehr. Beide beherrschen Psi-Attacken.

bislang: so far OR up to now

There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now.

This could just mean that Ness is in but has not been announced. Its not a complete stretch, but it is a hope.

Exactly as I though, Sakurai presented Lucas's moves saying that they're like Ness's, but at the same time pointing out the differences. I predicted he'd reveal Ness the day after, but now it doesn't seem very likely.

Ok... so Lucas doesn't even have a single move he has in his own game. GJ Sakurai. But wow, his moves do look sick.

yeah, we get be optimistic and still believe by the skin of our teeth Ness is in but honestly he never had a shot to begin with. Now his very slight chances have dwindled even further. But who knows, Sakurai might pull a fast one on us.

Ness isn't deconfirmed right now. Somehow, I think that Lucas is like Luigi in terms of semi-clones.
In brawl sakurai isnt going to try to make clones... even in melee he didnt mean for some of the clones, he had to rush some characters because of the release date and there u go... a swordless ganandorf... dr.mario... luigi i guess couldve been meant to be a clone... falco shouldve had his own moveset. So, ya, if you see ganondorf or falco in this game, they will have different movesets

Look, I'm not gonna go into translations and all that...
Instead, think of this.
Has Sakurai ever mentioned a character's name before updating said character?
He has shown character's in screenshots/trailers before updating them, yes, but never talked about them on the updates before actually updating their profile.

Also, Lucas was planned to be in for Melee, Ness was planned to be out, I see no reason why this idea wouldn't be carried over to Brawl.

Speculation, yes, I know... but use some "logic" and "common" sense ya know.
People were flaming when I said Petey Piranha was going to be a boss character and not playable, but hey, logic prevailed...
Yes, with Sakurai you never know, there is still an extreeeeemely slight chance Ness will be in, but seriously? I'd be surprised. He's as good as out, face it.

I DON'T KNOW!!!
Personally It don't bother me too much ether way... But I was batting on Ness being gone sense Mother 3 came out...

Lets face the facts here, like it or not it's not really one of our game series... We have one out of three of the Mother games & our only real attachment to Ness is do to the fact that he was the star of that one...

If you need further examples then just look at what there doing with Marth & Roy... We only got them because A. It was there series introduction to smash and B. no one outside of Japan had likely even herd of the FE series to begin with...
