Recent iterations of the Smash Bros series are amazingly accessible. The variety of controllers, coupled with the customizability of the controls mean that the game caters to anyone and everyone who plays it. Over time, we also learn about what we find is comfortable and in general just better for us; perhaps for many of us, the GameCube controller is not actually master race.

This thread is about where we've ended up in terms of our controls and what we feel is best for us. What kind of controller do you use? Have you fiddled with custom controls? Is there a specific setting that you think best suits the King of Evil in his quest for sovereignty and glory?

Of course, this is also an open survey. Feel free to fill out the info or maybe just take a peek at what other people use and see how it caters to you. If all goes well we can carry this over to other boards.

For the survey (all fields are optional, of course)...
  • What's your tag?
  • Which region of Smash Bros do you compete in?
  • Preferred controller type?
  • Do you use Tap Jump?
  • How is your C Stick set?
  • What other buttons do you like using?
The table is below!

EDIT: You don't have to post on this thread to provide survey answers. You may do this from anywhere as long as I see it :)

While it seems like the wii pro controller is the best option(octagon locks, 4 digital shoulder buttons), which seems like the optimal choice for smash 4, I need the rumble of a wired controller

Forgot to ask, but

I recall GCC standing for GameCube Controller, not Nintendo 3DS
If I had my way, GCC would stand for "gruntled circus clowns," but alas, it does indeed stand for gamecube controller. I use 3DS out of necessity, but the controller with which I'm most comfortable is the GCC. :p

Since L canceling isn't a thing, my L button went unused before I switched it over to jump. Now I can opt between L for full hops and X/Y for short hops. Provides better control over jump height, at least for me.

I would definitely encourage all Ganons to try setting R to jump. This is a huge help for up airing at the earliest possible point without the risk of jump cancelling an upsmash, and for jumping from ledge hang with an aerial onto the stage. I only really use it for those two scenarios, but it's made a pretty big difference. It occurred to me at one point that I basically used L for everything anyway.

Other: I use the standard controls really. I like having a jump button by each attack button for situational oos options, and smash stick to pivot fsmash easier.

Applied another update. I'll probably do another one of these on other boards.

Here's a vid that can help you decide which control scheme to use if you're not sold on one in particular.
