$30 is a great deal to be honest.
If you are really that strapped for cash, and you have access to a Wii or Wii U then look into USB loading.
I use USB loading myself, and have never looked back. Access to Melee texture hacks is great, and also I love having both my Project M and Melee stuff all on one drive. If you're looking to play with a Cube though, I would jump at $30 personally. You'll have to be very patient to find a cheaper price, and it will likely not come from online or a store; to get something cheaper you're probably talking garage sales or something where the seller doesn't really know the value. A while back I was able to find a copy at a flea market for $5 in a bin with a whole bunch of old Cube/PS1 games. Lightly scratched but served me well for a few years. That find was largely luck though, as I bought it from a mom who was selling her kids' old stuff.

Then your choices are as follows:

1. Pay ~$30 or so on ebay for a copy of the game (which is a perfectly fine price).

2. Scavenge around and try desperately to have a copy of the game fall in your lap and/or continue to not own a copy of melee (the second of which is far more likely).

Seriously dude, it's an in-demand, out of print 10+ year old game. Other gamecube titles are like a dollar because no one wants them. Melee doesn't fit that category.

there are only advantages for playing it on the wii via usb or SD loading, so i would recommend looking into that!

alternatively you can SD card load it on the gamecube as well for around ~$20

It took me a minute on Ebay to find two auctions that end in less than 8 hours. One is at $18.50 and the other is at $9.99.

Even if you end up paying $30, that's an amazing price for the best game you'll ever play. You could be paying twice as much for awful current gen games on expensive current gen consoles.
