Manny Calavera

Who is he?

Manuel Calavera, is the protagonist of Double Fine's Grim Fandango. The player assumes the role of Manny at the beginning of Year One, following right up to his departure from the Land of the Dead at the end of Year Four. As penance for his sins, Manny is not allowed to simply leave the Land of the Dead, but instead must work as a travel agent (a.k.a. a Reaper) in the Department of Death. Manny is quick witted and sarcastic, and throughout the game travels throughout various locales in order to leave the Land of the Dead.

Why should he be playable?
With Grim Fandango Remastered already available on Nintendo Switch, Manny has already passed a hurdle with his game being available on a Nintendo platform. Manny would also give the Adventure games genre (which was in its hayday during the late 90s) a representative in Smash. Grim Fandango is considered one of the very best in its genre and is well remembered. With Smash Ultimate being a celebration of all thing gaming, then I think Manny would fit the PC/Adventure game void very well.

What would make him different than rest of the cast?

Manny comes equipped with his scyrhe which would make perfect sense for him as his main melee weapon. But Manny does not have that much fighting experience at all compared to the rest of the cast. In this sense he would be a lot like Villager using everyday items (pulled straight from his games) to attack. Items like the fire extinguisher which he used on the Demon Beavers or even using the sprout gun in his moveset would be cool.

Stages, Costumes etc.
For what Manny could offer other than a character, Grim Fandango is ripe with locales that could provide for excellent stages. But my number 1 choice would be Casino Calavera. It would provide a nice aesthetic stage design not seen in Smash yet while also having other Grim Fandango characters in the background like Glottis playing the paino, and Meche. The music I don't even have to go in depth, anyone who played the game knows the music selection would be great for Smash. His alts could be all the different suits he wears throughout the game.

Thank you all for reading my first support thread. The idea for Manny really popped up randomly in my head and the more I thought about it the more I think it would be a cool idea. I'll update the supporters list once a week. Definitely a longshot but its fun to dream right?

I've waited for so long for someone to make this thread. Grim Fandango is a masterpiece and I'd love to see Manny duking it out in Smash.

If you can't attempt to frighten your opponents with a Robert Frost balloon animal, they'll have missed the boat, TBQH.

But that said, DoubleFine owns the IP now and Microsoft owns DoubleFine. They did play ball with BK, so even as a longshot, it could happen, and I'd certainly love to see him over most of Microsoft's offerings.

Pretty sure Double Fine just made the remaster and LucasArts still retains the IP.

Which would make Manny a Disney rep. Boy oh boy.

Whenever I see it mentioned, I see the phrase "Acquired the license" or "Acquired the rights", so I took it to mean they have control, but I guess it could just be a one-off licensing deal rather than a full transfer. :-/

Unclear. But if it's still in Disney's hands, that could be a complication...

Oh wow I totally forgot Disney bought LucasArts and probably owns all their IP as well. IIRC Disney is very lenient with those old LucasArts IPs. Not only has there been GF remastered, but also for Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle as well. But yeah could you imagine Manny was out Disney rep before Sora?
