Combos? In MY Barwl?!

You've just reminded me that from like a month ago that we don't really have a thread dedicated to approaches, I was going to make one... D;

Anyway, the difference between side/down B thread is a MUST for anyone picking up Sonic. Check that out. Other then that, have a look in the Index stickied thread and read what takes your fancy.

Welcome to the forums.

We hope you like pokeymanz.

I think everyone knows combos don exits in barwl.

But yes, SideB/DownB thread is a MUST read. I also suggest checking out the Advanced Sonic guide and such :p

As for the background on steak...that's not important, lol.

Yep, it even has a link that explains the whole steak thing.

Seriously, our stickies are probably the most up-to-date stickies you'll ever find on this site.

Lol Sago i told you sonic was awesome! I know i was your inspiration <3. Anyways since we just had dittos i'll give you direct tips it looked like you needed moar f-air approach and you need to use spins more frequently to approach as well. Never use his jab that often and almost never up b that closely to the stage i edgeguarded your entire last stock. Also you can try to d-throw tech chase for kills. As you see Sonic requires a LOT of practice. Other than that good start Sagay :p

Bread and butter combos? Approaches? KILL SET UPS?

Who do you think you're picking up, Metaknight?

uhhhhmm so some general information:

Although you'll find threads that are chock full of things like kill setups and combos, a ton of them are character specific and need their own tweaking based on the match-up.

As for approaches and kill-setups, you need to get used to the idea that both of these are going to be largely dependent on mind-games given Sonic's lack of range on most of his attacks. Shield canceled ASC was a life saver in this department as you could easily mind game the hell out of people with it. You have options; you just gotta know how to use them effectively (and not just "mix things up" randomly).

Getting good with Sonic is a long process though. So as far as where to start... just try having fun with him and build a desire to keep playing with him. Otherwise, you'll quit from frustration of losing to cheap and absurdly basic tactics before you really get the hang of him.

you need to use spins more frequently to approach
But not really to approach...... use them to bait responses that you can respond to, and to punish lag. But once you get moving with a spindash, your trajectory is predictable and punishable. side-B is more oft just shield-cancelled as a fakeout, although the moment you see it will actually connect, go for it; since they probably assumed it was fake :) down-B is similar, though almost trickier in this sense.... drift its charging state in the air and wait for them to respond... or tunnel it right in front of them into a shield or grab-cancel, or approach at them with it to bait an attack, then jump out and punish with another falling attack.

Euhm.... Sonic has some obvious combos (spindash roll along the ground (SDR) > spindash jump (SDJ) > aerial attack), but you should be spending most of the time pressuring your opponent to swipe at you, then punishing them for it; then being very defensive since most of Sonic's moves are quite punishable themselves, especially once they predict your trajectory (which can be easy; predictable habits with Sonic develop very quickly!!). Sonic's grab game is a staple; run in and out, shield attacks, and grab if you're in range. If you're out of their range from a shield (ex. shielding a Marth tipper), you should probably run away since he can beat out your moves with his range and speed. Run in and shield his moves = grab = grab follow-ups which are some of our better "combos" you should explore.

make sure u check some sonic matches of players like RATS, Malcolm, and Mr. 3000 on youtube to get a good feel for his advanced mindgames, and thier versatility. They all play different, that's a good indication.

Yeah, I am. George said something about Aiko and Tails Chao saying they were going too?

On topic, definatly agreed with what people have been saying. Sonic is VERY frustrating to play. Usually, just when you feel like you're making progress, your opponent will find a way to counter you and you'll be on the back foot, and it's hard to get back into the game. I've found that this can happen randomly in the middle of a match, so you either have to change your playstyle, else if you carry on using the same thing you're going to be brickwalled by anybody with a dtilt

Yeah I remember a time period where we all went emo because we couldn't win with Sonic >_>

Anyone else remember that? Funny stuff...

But yeah, just keep trying with it. If Sonic is really the character for you, then things should work out. Fortunatley, we discovered all the things that make Sonic MUCH easier to play already, so that "frustration" phase should go by much more quickly than it did for us...

I went through that phase sometime during July, so I never got it here in the Sonic Boards (I didn't get involved here until later on, although I did read your crazy shiz.)

Nope, it's already too late. He made a thread once here before, and this is his second one.

He's already sucked in.

Steak.
