This is a bit tricky to comment on without knowing the full roster in the base game. So I'm going to roll with an idea for what the base roster could be based on each of the 5 remaining stages (according to Corocoro) synchronizing with a newcomer and who I think the most likely of those newcomers would be (for the most part).

So base game wise, that would leave us with the currently confirmed cast in addition to:

Shantae
Elma
Isaac
Geno
And either Incineroar or Lycanroc for unique newcomers (it could be either one of the two Gen 7 Pokemon honestly. This is all a "what-if" anyway so just pick the one you prefer).

14 DLC characters is pretty substantial, though it's probably fair to say that DLC will last longer than it did for Smash 4. There would definitely be more echoes than I'm including, but:

Spoiler: First Party

1. Skull Kid. Most wanted character since pre-Brawl. Doubt he'll be in the base game at this point, but hopeful for DLC.
2. Midna & Wolf Link. If I could have one confirmed AT become a playable fighter, this is who I'd pick. I'd want her to fight with Wolf Link, as that'd open up more moveset possibilities. Yes, it would mean four Links, but Four Swords did it so why not Smash ... right?
3. Paper Mario. 'This character has great moveset potential' is a cliche, but it's really the case for Paper Mario, who could be unique, using a mixture of partners, paper moves, his hammer, Pixls and moves from ... the other games
4. Sudowoodo. Because why not.
5. Dixie Kong. I don't want her in as an echo - it'd make much more sense if she was a semi-clone.
6. The President from Pikmin (echo). Give him a Charlie alt, while giving Olimar Louie and Brittany alts. All captains are now playable.
7. Some kind of character representing Smash itself. Master Hand would be ideal, though I don't know how they'd make him work. Tabuu could also potentially work, if scaled down a bit.

Spoiler: Third Party

1. Rayman. Most wanted third party. A fighter with detachable limbs could be really fun. Mario and Star Fox are appearing in Ubisoft games, so it's only natural that the crossover should go the other way too. Besides, Sakurai must surely be aware of the infamous Smash 4 leak, right?
2. Banjo & Kazooie. Never played their games, but they just make sense as an a fighter and would make a lot of people happy. I mean, could anyone really object to their inclusion?
3. Professor Layton. Not sure how he'd play as a fighter, but I'm sure Sakurai and his team could work their magic.
4. Amaterasu. Ammy + Wolf + Wolf Link = Three Wolf Moon. Make it happen, Sakurai.
5. Geno. Don't personally care, but I've used up all the characters I want, so why not.
6. Shadow (echo). Not interested in Sonic games, but I've grown to appreciate the edgehog.
7. Free space. Bayo echo (for x2 salt)? Cloud echo? Pac-Man echo? Not fussed.
