So everyone knows for a fact that we won't get non-video game characters in Smash, but who says we can't have a little fun fantasizing about it? From the following list, pick a character who originates from each of those medias who you think would be fun to play as in Smash. No criticizing others' posts, and please offer a little explanation as to why you chose said characters to help further develop discussion. Oh, and make sure to name where your characters come from.

Non-video game medias:

Live action TV show or movie
Cartoon animated TV show or movie
Anime/manga
Trading Card Game (TCG)
Comic book/graphic novel
Fictional novel/literature

....I'm not going to post my characters now in case this thread gets closed.

Don't judge me but I'd add Gumball and Darwin from the amazing world of Gumball ( before you say that it's two characters it's like Pokémon trainer that you can change character mid battle and would occupy one slot) I think the move set would be filled with references from the cartoon
A few movest ideas
Gumball's side b: uses anais as the anaiallator from the episode the tape
Gumball's neutral b: will use the "hadouken" that he does to insult Darwin in the episode the words
Down b for Gumball and Darwin: you see one of the two characters high five the over as the character that has to enter the battlefield's face is miserable
Up b for Gumball and Darwin: they would use Bobert (the robot) to fly back on the stage
Darwin's neutral b: a chargeable attack that is his window breaking scream
Darwin's side b:he'd throw is shoe at his opponents that would come like a boomerang
And etc...

Question: When you say characters, you mean playable fighters, right? Or can I post a character I think would work as an Assist Trophy?

Also, I think we could follow Superragnol29 example and give the chosen character a few moves or explain how they would work.

As a playable fighter. Sorry, I should have clarified.

Personally I don't want any non video game characters in Smash but I still will answer the question for fun because I think this could be a fun discussion. I would like to see a character from the anime Full Metal Alchemist because I think they would have a lot of moveset potential. I would like to see one of or both the Elric brothers or Pride. I think those characters in particular would play differently than other characters and bring something new to the table. I don't watch much anime but I really loved this series and would love to see it get involved in gaming.

Well, if I really had to...

Live action: Darth Vader, as Star Wars is one of the biggest media franchises in history up there with Pokemon, and Vader is probably the most recognizable face of the series.

Cartoon: Mickey or Bugs would be a tough choice for the "face" of cartoons. I might actually go with SpongeBob because he's had at least some success in the realm of video games. Shrek is also a candidate in that regard, but I think the Shrek game fanbase is more ironic, and 3D animation doesn't do a whole lot of justice to the whole of cartoons as it's a comparatively new medium. If there were a 3D category I'd nominate Shrek. Get some of that sweet competitive Super Slam scene over here.

Anime: Maybe Kid Goku, since the adult one would have to be neutered beyond recognition. There aren't many other anime characters with that kind of global recognition. Maybe Astro Boy? But c'mon.

TCG: Yugi Muto/Moto. The classic rivalry between Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon would be cool to see realized in a fighting game. The closest thing to a mascot monster is Dark Magician or Kuriboh, but I think Yugi with his summoning mechanics from the Jump games has more interesting moveset potential.

Comics: my man Garfield - naw, people would pretty much demand a superhero. For the sake of not neutering Superman I'd probably go with Batman or Spiderman. I lean a little more towards Bats, myself.

Novel: That's a big pool of characters I'm not especially attached to. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, James Bond... all potential candidates. I think I'd have to go with James Bond specifically because Goldeneye was such an influential video game and would give them some good source material to draw from.

Sasuke, Killua and Katakuri are legit Smash material. Kid Goku would be neat and would seriously blend in. Jackie Chan Adventures Jackie would be badass and brilliant. Adventure Time, Finn. Rick from Rick and Morty. Steven, honestly. Huey, Aang and a Powerpuff Girl.

Courage the Cowardly Dog. I just like the show and I think Courage is a great character.
I'm not sure what to say about his normal attacks, but his special attacks should consist in what he does best: scream as hard as possible. Also, Eustace's Mask as a counter.

Seeing as there's actual discussion I think I'll post mine:

Live action: Jack Bauer from 24. He's the ultimate badass.
Cartoon: I have to go with Superragnol29 Superragnol29 and say Gumball and Darwin from the Amazing World of Gumball, they're my most nostalgic cartoon figures.
Anime/manga: Light Yagami from Deathnote. It's my favorite anime and Light is one of the most clever characters ever written
Trading Card Game: Nicol Bolas from Magic: The Gathering. He's the Thanos of the world's most popular high-fantasy TCG, what's not to love about him?
Comic: Calvin and Hobbes as a duo fighter. I'm pretty nostalgia biased on this one but you can't tell me they wouldn't be awesome
Novel: James Bond from the original Casino Royale. The easiest way to represent 007 games.

Picking one character is tough, so he's a few.
I'd like to still stick with having some kind of tie to Nintendo.

Turok
James Bond
The Ninja Turtles
Scrooge McDuck
Spider-man (who has earned a spot for Maximum carnage if nothing else)

A Star Wars characters might be nice too. The fact that Shadows of the Empire was one of Nintendo's best sellers abck in the day kinda wants me to include the main character from that but having Dash Rendar be the choice seems like a waste, so I might have to go with Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.

As for including an anime character, I know Goku is usually the go-to choice, but I feel that Sailor Moon actually fits the Nintendo feel better and is just about iconic.

Having a guest star from the Super Mario Brother Super Show might be cool too (especially if we got a Captain Lou Mario to go with it.)
Elvira, Inspector gadget, or Sgt. Slaughter would be my top three choices there.

I have a lot of choices, but I'm choosing Godzilla for a lot of reasons.

One of them being that he appeared in a lot of video games (some for Nintendo). Plus a few Godzilla monsters (including Bagan, Obsidius and Balkzardan) debuted in video games.

Plus he has a lot of abilities and feats that gives him a well earned spot in the roaster.

There are more ideas, but this is the choice I made.

Seriously, just imagine a 11-year old child fighting both Galeem and Dharkon who are freaking eldritch gods.

He's definitely a solid choice for recognition and cultural impact; he'd have to be dramatically downsized, though. I feel like that would kind of defeat the purpose of the character.

Live action TV show or movie - Darth Vader - Like someone mentioned above, Star Wars is a huge franchise, and Darth Vader makes the most sense due to pure recognizability. He would obviously use his lightsaber, and could use the force choke for his grabs.

Cartoon animated TV show or movie - Bugs Bunny - It was a tie between Bugs and Mickey, and Bugs just seems like more of a fighter. He would use nonsensical moves inspire by his animated shorts, using various bombs and other tricks.

Anime/manga - Goku - Goku is probably the most obvious choice for this, not only is largely asked for in Smash, but is the face of the most popular anime. I imagine he would have the Kamehameha for his neutral special.

Trading Card Game (TCG) - Yugi Moto/Jace Beleren - This one is a tie. Both Yu-gi-oh (Yugi) and Magic: The Gathering (Jace) are huge TCG, probably in the top three with Pokemon. They would both probably have a summoner playstyle, although maybe not Jace as I know very little about MTG.

Comic book/graphic novel - Spider-Man - There were many options I considered for this spot (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Batman, and Superman), but I ultimately decided on Spider-Man as I feel he is the most recognizable Marvel character, and I chose Marvel due to the popularity of the MCU.

Fictional novel/literature - Gandalf - Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are both huge franchises, with Lord of the Rings being the third best selling (non-Religious/political) book of all time. I considered Peter Pan, but that was mostly because of personal bias.

Live-Action Movie - THE PREDATOR: Usually this is where I'd put James Bond, but then I thought that the Predator has a more interesting look and arsenal, not to mention, the Alien vs. Predator franchise is very well regarded in the gaming community, even though it started as a comic book that joined two movie franchises. With blades, spears, throwing discs and plasma blasters, he's got quite the arsenal there... also, have his alts. be all based on Kenner/NECA's wacky action figures! Add a stage either based on a Yautja temple, spaceship or something like that and a friggin' Xenomorph as an Assist Trophy and you have AVP perfectly represented in Smash!

Western Animation - MICKEY MOUSE: Technically I'm cheating here because I'm talking about his Epic Mickey incarnation, which is game-exclusive, but it's still Mickey Mouse. It'd be neat to play as him using his magic brush with the Paint/Thinner mechanic, as well as the "Sketches." Also, the Clock Tower as a stage with the Clock Tower itself as a stage hazard while its creepy and deranged version of "It's A Small World" plays in the background would be awesome! Also, Oswald as an Assist Trophy... because obviously!

Anime/Manga - KENSHIRO: Everyone says either Goku, Naruto, Luffy or Jotaro, but I think Ken (no, not THAT Ken... although did you know that they both share a live-action actor? ...anyways) deserves a bit of attention, after all, without him, we wouldn't have Shonen heroes, especially JoJo! He's got a lot of rapid-fire moves and some energy based moves, so, he's got the potential there. Add a post-apocalyptic stage and Rei as an Assist Trophy and you have the original MANime prefectly represented!

Comic-Book - BATMAN: A very obvious choice, I know, but... it's friggin' Batman! And much like the Predator (who, coincidentally, has faced him in a crossover comic) he's got quite the videogame prescence, mostly with the Arkham and Injustice games. Martial arts and gadgets, pretty standard stuff, but still has potential. Add the Batcave as a stage and either Robin or Batgirl as an Assit Trophy and there you go!

Literature - SAURON: He's actually my #1 choice for an "out here" SoulCalibur guest character, like Spawn and Darth Vader... buuut why not imagine him also in Smash? I imagine he'd be pretty slow but hits hard, kinda like Ganondorf... also, SAURON vs. GANONDORF. That alone would be friggin' great. Add Mordor as a Stage and the Witch King and his Fellbeast as an Assist Trophy and you have one book character in Smash to rule them all!

I realized that I didn't fully answer the question.

So yes from anime I'd say Elric brothers or Pride from Full Metal Alchemist.

From live action movie/TV show I'd say I probably agree about Predator. Turning invisible, clawing people up, shooting all sorts of projectiles, what's not to love? Can you imagine predator getting beaten up by Pichu? Godzilla was a good choice also.

From cartoon I definitely have to go with Finn/Jake from Adventure time because I love Adventure Time and Jake would allow their kit to be literally anything you'd want.

From comics I'm real tempted to say Batman but I'm actually going to go with a lesser known hero in Gambit from Marvel. Gambit can change kinetic energy, uses a Bo staff which only Palutena really comes close to doing on the roster, and throws playing cards...he's like a mega kick butt magician which would be so cool in Smash.

TCG is harder for me because I don't play any and I don't want to cop out and choose a Pokemon so I'm going with Jinzo from Yu-Gi-Oh because he's creepy and cool and his powers and the way he attacks isn't really something we've seen in smash so I think it'd be really unique and cool.

And literature I'm going with LotR also here and Sauron is the way to go. His armor is super legit. He'd be another heavier character probably and the first to use a mace. Plus sorcery is always a nice fit for smash.

Again I really would not want any non video game characters in Smash but technically all of these characters do show up in video games. Still I'd rather see more dedicated game icons.

Hard to come up with characters for each of these so I’m just gonna say one - Strong Bad

It’s clear from the web series that the creators of Homestar Runner are big video game nerds and Nintendo in particular. The last episode of the Wiiware series was practically a love letter to the classic Nintendo games of old...this would be a great way to return the favor.

Mind you that Isabelle, Villager, a dog with a duck on top of it, and even a fitness trainer are playable fighters. So I don't see anything wrong here.

To answer your question, I would imagine him fighting similar to Robin by summoning Shinigami to do his bidding, with Ryuk as a sort of Joker's Arsene to accompany him and assist with his attacks.

Since this is a fun thread, I'll share my choices for each, as well as my top 5 picks for 4th parties as a whole.

Live action: Xenomorph or Demogorgon

Animated TV: SpongeBob or Ben Tennyson (holy moveset potential Batman. Would be an absolute nightmare to program however, due to having an arsenal of 70+ aliens.)

Anime: Goku (duh) or Saitama

TCG: Idk for this one. Exodius? Or someone from Magic the Gathering? (I don't play either of these card games lol plz don't kill me)

Comics: Thanos

Literature: Gandalf

(One category you should've added was Real Life "characters". Ex: John Cena)

My top 5:
1. Gordon Ramsay
2. SpongeBob
3. Steve Harvey
4. Xenomorph
5. Ben Tennyson

Cartoon: Popeye or SpongeBob SquarePants

Popeye would be a very cool addition in Smash Bros. imo, bringing back the super strong sailor. He'd of course use his strength, maybe some different items/objects, and whatever. He'd eat spinach for his Final Smash, and lash out incredibly strong attacks.

I've also loved SpongeBob since I was little, so he'd be another one of my favorite additions if Smash was an all-media crossover. He could use moves from his games such as the bubble torpedo or bubble bowling ball, the viking helmet, the bubble wand, and he could do other things too, of course, such as use his jellyfishing net and his spatula. Maybe even have Patrick or Gary as a partner, or have one of them appear in SpongeBob's final smash, whatever it'd be.

Anime/Manga: Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) - Pokémon or Hamtaro

I'd really like to see them in Smash; you'd control Meowth with Arbok, Weezing, or Wobbufett as a partner that stays with you (you can switch them out).

Hamtaro is another anime I like, though I haven't really watched it since I was little and saw it on Cartoon Network/had one or two VHS tapes...I guess I've just kept a fondness for it. I also have two GBA games, but...they don't work anymore... I'm not sure what he would do, but I'd still like to see him.

Comic: Spider-Man

He's my favorite Marvel hero, so I think he'd be very cool. I wouldn't really care what he did, as long as he still keeps his web slinging. Maybe he could climb walls? Or have a longer time of standing on them...

Darth Vader would be pretty cool. That's about it.

Cartoon Animated TV Show or Movie
Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are the OGs but I'd pick Spongebob, as other people have suggested, due to his big video game successes. He's got like three good games, with a remake on the way, too. A lot more than some other cartoon characters out there. Tons of stuff you could use from Battle for Bikini Bottom, the movie adaptation game, or the show itself.

Anime/Manga
Goku makes me snore. How about something from Studio Ghibli, despite Miyazaki's own avoidance of video games? Howl from Howl's Moving Castle?

Trading Card Game (TCG)
No comment, because I've never played any TCG besides Pokemon. Hell, I don't think I ever played it. I just collected the cards.

Comic Book/Graphic Novel
I'm picking Garfield and you can't stop me. Even more absurdist internet parodies would cometh.

Fictional Novel/Literature

Dracula! But, like, not the Bram Stoker Dracula...Castlevania Dracula. But the character originates from a book. Whatever, you get the point. He'd be cool.

Some stages like Fourside would be the closer to kaiju feel, since the characters look bigger then they should. If Godzilla (or any kaiju) where to be added, they would also add Tokyo as well (with the characters scaled to giant kaiju height to even things out. After all, just like the fighters, Godzilla would technically be a toy, which explains why he would be like that. FWI Godzilla would be scaled to either Bowser's height, or if certain monsters (like King Ghidorah and Biollante) gets added, Between the height of Samus and Mewtwo.

I think that would clear it up, at least for now.

One Punch Man could be an amazing slow start and slow pace character, his attacks would literally act trolly and take 1%. I also think Sally/Cat in the hat could be really fun and magical.

Lying about my country.
Live action TV show or movie:
Luke Skywalker. Seems like the best choice to me, Star Wars is iconic as ****, and there's a ton of **** you could do with Jedi in general. Just deciding which version of Luke would be a fun discussion on it's own. I mean, Episode VI Luke would be a full blown Jedi, using force powers as his specials and lightsaber moves as his normals. But Episode V Luke would perhaps be more interesting, using the lightsaber for some moves, while relying on other types of equipment for others, like blasters.

Cartoon animated TV show or movie:
Mickey Mouse is the most famous animated character of all time. The only thing that's kind of weird is the idea of a moveset. I mean what moveset do you choose for Mickey Mouse, when he has done pretty much literally everything throughout history? Do you just add countless different references to his hundreds of completely different appearances? It's kinda hard to turn him into a Smash character.

Anime/manga:
Goku is too obvious.

Trading Card Game (TCG):
Uh... This is kind of weird to me because most of the well-known TCGs are just based on multi-media properties. The most famous TCG that is also an original IP is Magic The Gathering and... This might just be my ignorance talking, but how do you even choose a Magic The Gathering character? Are there any "important" characters to its lore?

Comic book/graphic novel:
I'd go for Spider-Man. He's super popular, and his moveset potential is freaking endless. He could do whatever a spider can, like spinning a web any size, and catching thieves just like flies!

Fictional novel/literature:
Definitely something LotR. Honestly a lot of characters would make sense here, but I think the best would be Gandalf. He's a super major figure in both the LotR books and The Hobbit, and a super important piece of the lore of Middle Earth in general. He'd fight with his sword and staff, and of course, cast magic spells, which looking at some of his game appearances could be literally anything :p. He digs fire though, which is already a great start for a fighter moveset.

Frodo or Bilbo would make sense too, as super lightweight characters. I feel like they could have a gimmick involving the Ring, but it's hard to think of one without it feeling forced, which is what leads me to think Gandalf is a better choice overall.

What about Light Yagami from Deathnote? We're aware he's been mentioned before, but we have a few ideas.
1. Light has martial arts abilities. Yes, and they've been shown off when he fought L in Amane's hotel room. Use one of such kicks as an F-Smash or something?
2. Ryuk. Like, imagine the Neutral B being Light throwing an apple, which does, like 1 damage, but then Ryuk flies past, taking the apple and doing fair damage (but only if the apple itself hits.) Furthermore, many of Light's specials could be related to Ryuk. An example could be a kind of combination between Duck Jump and Wings of Rebellion for an Up B, where Ryuk picks up Light and flies for a bit (lol)
3. Final Smash is fairly simple. He basically creates a kind of target (like Fox or Falco, but smaller and more... Deathnote) in front of him that leads to a cutscene of him writing that character's name in the Deathnote. It's an instant KO, but is harder to hit due to a small hitbox, so perhaps would lead to being more like Jigglypuff's Rest than an actual Final Smash.
4. Other Stuff; alts could reference different characters from Deathnote, like L. Also, the actual icon could be the Deathnote logo, or perhaps an apple? A taunt could be taking a potato chip and eating it. Stuff like that could work pretty well.

Appling originality to most characters can make them effective, and this style is likely in Smash as it effectively references the source material whilst being fun, even if this is, like, ridiculously unlikely (but we'd literally have to pick up our jaw from the floor in front of us if it did.)

Just some thoughts. Hope y'all are having a nice day :D

Still up Peach's dress.
Live action TV show or movie: Kermit the Frog. Yes, really.

Cartoon animated TV show or movie: Mickey Mouse. Actually if it's truly upto me; Donald Duck. He just seems more like a fighter than the mouse.

Anime/manga: Monkey D. Luffy. ******** to Goku, Luffy has the best selling manga of all time.

Trading Card Game (TCG): I dunno, Yugi-oh? Best I got.

Comic book/graphic novel: Spiderman...or Scott Pilgrim. Spiderman is one of the most popular superheroes of all time after all, and Scott Pilgrim...well I just enjoyed the graphic novels of Scott Pilgrim. The movie less so.

Fictional novel/literature: Probably Harry Potter. Seems like he'd have the most interesting moveset.

(...how did this thread get popular again)

Anyway, allow me to answer your question. Since it's off topic I'll put it in a spoiler.
You're right that MTG is a bit different than other trading card games. Whereas Pokemon, Yugioh, Bakugan etc. all have TV shows with cards/abilities used both in the show and the game, Magic is different. In a way you could say that the TCG and the actual story and lore function independant of one another--the cards are simply depictions/representations of the story, and don't canonically exist at all. But almost every story important character has a card of your ow. So to answer your question, the best character they could choose to represent it falls to either:
A. Chandra Nalaar, the fiery haired pyromancer seen on half the packaging and merchandise
B. Jace Beleren, the edgy telepath who was the major focus of the story for some time
C. Nicol Bolas, the main antagonist of the latest Infinity War style story arc, also my current pfp.
