If you could trade 10 returning stages for 10 new stages of your choice. What would you do?

Quick disclaimer, this is for fun. As much as I’d like more new stages. I’ve accepted that everything is focused on what’s returning. Which is fine BUT if I had the choice to bring 10 new stages in Smash Ultimate in exchange for 10 returning stages I don’t care for. Here’s what I would pick.

I’d like to see what you guys would choose as well!

10 Returning Stages I’d Scrap
1. PAC-Land (It’s sloppy and ugly to look at)
2. Mario Bros. (Looks cool but not fun.)
3. Yoshi’s Story (See Yoshi’s Island & Happy Tree)
4. Hanenbow (Nah...)
5. Distant Planet (Nothing personal, just don’t like the water.)
6. Skyloft (Not very memorable IMO)
7. Mute City Snes (I like nostalgia but I can live without this one)
8. Pokemon Stadium 1 (We got 2 already)
9. Smashville (I feel Town & City is just superior and we don’t need the former)
10. Living Room (Cute Dog in a boring stage)

10 NEW STAGES
1. Lorule (A tour of Lorule which leads to Lorule Castle and Yuga/Hilda in the background.

2. GangPlank Galleon/Flying Croc//Boxing Ring
(A Tour Through K. Rool’s iconic boss fights. Left out DKC3 because it would be overkill)

3. Bowser’s Castle W/ Exor (Mario RPG)

4. Super Mario Party (We need some Mario Party love out chea!)

5. Pac-Man/Galagia mash up Stage

6. Pokken Dark Colleseum Stage

7. WarioWare Gold (More wacky mini games)

8. Mega Man X’s Central Highway

9. Chemical Plant or Studiopolis (Sonic Mania)

10. Luigi’s Mansion 2 (King Boo themed please!)

OUT:
  • Mushroom Kingdom II (I don't remember much of this stage, other than it being boring as sin)
  • Onett (why bother having walkoffs if you're just going to block them off with giant buildings?)
  • Temple (I've always hated this stage)
  • Hanenbow (Boring)
  • Figure-8 Circuit (The other Mario Kart stage is cooler-looking)
  • Golden Plains (Lame coin gimmick)
  • Pac-Land (it's visually confusing, it's disorienting, it's ugly, and it smells bad)
  • Garden of Hope (Uncomfortable layout compared to Distant Planet)
  • Pilotwings (Wuhu Island is cooler)
  • Windy Hill (We already have Green Hill. Buzz off!)

IN:
  • Palace of Twilight (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)
    • It's been years since I played Twilight Princess, but I remember enough about it to absolutely want at least some part of it as a stage.
  • Sinnoh Champion's Room (Pokemon: Platinum)
    • A small, flat stage with walk-offs (slightly less wide than Wii Fit Studio, but equal height from floor to KO range). In the background, you can see an Altered Form Giratina and Garchomp fighting. Occasionally, Giratina's Earth Power or Garchomp's Flamethrower will miss and becomes a stage hazard. Turning off the stage hazards removes these two from the background.
  • Shiver Star Mall (Kirby & The Crystal Shards)
    • An autoscroller stage with conveyor belts, boxes getting thrown around, crushers, and some assembly line claws messing things up.
  • Leviathan Seed (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption)
    • A spacious walk-off stage where either Mogenar, Helios, or Omega Ridley show up as bosses to make everyone's day (including :ultridley:'s and :ultdarksamus:'s for some reason) miserable.
  • Devil's Machine (Earthbound)
    • I've never played Earthbound, so I'm not sure if this area would work as a stage. All I know is that this is the area where you fight Porky and Giygas, and that's good enough for me.
  • Arsenal Gear (Metal Gear Solid 2: Guns of the Patriots)
    • A "Final Destination"-esque stage that takes place in the room where Raiden fought an onslaught of Metal Gear RAYs. For stage hazards, a Metal Gear RAY is floating in the background, and performs numerous attacks that the fighters have to dodge, including machine guns, a hydro cannon (that's not what it's named, but it gets across that the mouth lazer is actually high-pressure water so that's I'm calling it), and homing missiles.
  • Crashed Egg Carrier (Sonic Adventure)
    • The stage is basically a 2D recreation of the arena where you fought E101-Beta MKII, but in HD so it'll look ****in' breathtaking. Kind of a Final Destination clone, otherwise.
  • If allowed to bring back unconfirmed older stages, bring back...
    • Rainbow Road (Smash 4- 3DS)
    • PAC-MAZE (Smash 4- 3DS)
    • Orbital Gate Assault (Smash 4- Wii U)
  • If not allowed to bring back unconfirmed older stages...
    • Bowser's Castle (Mario Kart 64)
      • Much like Castle Siege, this stage has multiple phases. The First and Final Phase is the Start/Finish line. It is a Final Destination Clone with no underside (except in Omega Form, I presume), and has no platforms or obstacles. Phase 2 is the interior; a large room with walk-offs on both ends, thwomps, and statues that shoot fire lazers. Phase 3 is the gardens. The only blast-zone here is above, but the giant fire-breathing bowser statue and oncoming racers take care of that problem. Phase 4 is the lava bridge. Oncoming racers make the bridge itself dangerous, and fire geysers mean you can't spend too long getting back onto the stage. Phase 5 is towards the end of the track. It has a tower on the left side that acts like a wall, and a walk-off on the right. A bottomless pit seperates the wall from the floor, and a fire geyser often shoots out from this to screw over unlucky players. The terrain itself is sloped in the shape of a ramp that peaks upward toward the wall. If you've ever raced on this stage in Mario Kart 64 or Wii, you'll know what I'm talking about with these phases.
    • Valley of Repose (Pikmin 2)
      • A snowy area with walk-offs.
    • Temple of Souls (Hyrule Warriors)
      • It'd probably be like Dracula's castle where various parts of the original map are condensed to fit into one large-but-not-ridley-sized stage. Dark Link would likely be a stage hazard.

OUT:
  • PAC-LAND - never liked it
  • Hanenbow - never liked it
  • Rainbow Cruise - hard to play catch up
  • 75m - not a good representation of DK
  • Golden Plains - weird gimmick
  • Windy Hill zone - weird point gravity
  • Peach’s Castle 64 - lack of fighting space
  • Mute City SNES - the pixellation is weird
  • Balloon Fight - wrapping leads to easy KOs
  • Tomodachi Life - boring and visually distracting.
ADD:
  • Any version of Bowser’s Castle
  • A version of Ganon’s Castle - possibly Ocarina so it can go through the six sage rooms as well like the Pokemon League stage
  • Another Fire Emblem stage - don’t know the series.
  • Return PAC-MAZE without the gimmick
  • Tetris stage - can only get vertical KOs, but also crushing hazards from falling blocks. Also launches on completing a line.
  • Rainbow Road (N64) as seen in MK8 (touring)
  • Frantic Factory (DK64)
  • Rhythm Heaven (like Wario Ware with minigames)
  • Chemical Plant Zone (Sonic 2...hopefully with newcomer Tails)
  • Skyrim touring stage (with Dovahkiin as playable)

OUT:
1. Pac-Land - Nobody likes this stage.
2. Windy Hill Zone - Sonic doesn't need two stages.
3. Great Cave Offensive - Way too big
4. Pictochat 2 - Replace it with X, see below
5. Unova Pokemon League - Hazards can be way too obnoxious
6. Hanenbow - Does anyone like this stage?
7. Mario Bros. - Worst version of the classic stage gimmick. 75m, Duck Hunt, and Balloon Fight are all better.
8. Dream Land GB - Also a bad classic stage. Flat Zone's version of that gimmick works better
9. Bridge of Eldin - Probably the blandest Zelda stage.
10. Find Mii - I just never liked this stage

IN:
1. Pac-Maze, adjusted for one screen
2. Bowser's Castle
3. A stage based on Kirby's Epic Yarn
4. Pictochat X - The transformations of both Pictochat stages
5. PokeFloats 2 - New stage with new Pokemon floating by
6. The Odyssey - A traveling stage that primarily takes place on the Odyssey, moving to different kingdoms of SMO
7. Threed - An EarthBound stage with the occassional zombies
8. A version of Icicle Mountain from Melee, except it scrolls significantly slower.
9. Paper Stage - A stage based on Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Its layout and setting changes when the curtain randomly closes and opens.
10. Forest Maze

Old Stages to Remove
1. Golden Plains
2. 75m
3. Super Happy Tree
4. The Great Cave Offensive
5. Pokémon Stadium
6. Pokémon Stadium 2
7. Smashville
8. Mute City SNES
9. Pac-Land
10. PictoChat 2
1. Big Final Destination
- Just an elongated version of Final Destination for more players to fight on at once. Big Battlefield is already a thing, so why not this one.

2. Subspace
- A third basic stage like Battlefield and Final Destination that uses Subspace ascetics from Smash Brawl's story mode. One platform that moves from side to side. It's pretty much Smashville which I already listed on the above list of stages to remove. I thought since the stage is as well recognized as a starter as Battlefield and Final Destination that it deserves to get recognition and become an official Smash Bros themed stage alongside the other two. Plus, Villager is beginning to have too much stage representation and I wanted to tone that down.

3. Big Subspace
- Of course, if the other two have larger variations now, the Smash stage series wouldn't be complete without this one.

4. Bowser's Castle
- Not identical to the one from Project M, but the people who made it had the right idea.

5. 25m
- Do I really need to explain how this one would work or why I want it in over 75m?

6. City Trial
- A stage much like the bunch that carry you around on a common platforms and drop you off at various locations in the city from Kirby's Air Ride. Boxes can fall from the sky and if broken will contain items. They will not drop if items are off. The color of the box corresponds to which type of item will come out of the box much like in the original game.

7. Pokémon Stadium 3
- This stage would also use all the transformations found in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2. It would also add four new ones for the Bug, Dark, Ghost, and Poison types. All transformations now have extra Pokémon in the background too.

8. Anything from Fire Emblem
- This franchise has a severe lack of stage representation. There needs to be another stage. I don't know what it would be, but this series needs more representation in the stage roster.

9. Pac-Maze
- I know it was in the 3DS version, but this one doesn't use the former's main mechanic. The layout is mostly the same, but the solid land floating above the first floor will become a platform fighters can jump through and fall through.

10. PictoChat 3
- This stage would use all the drawings found in both PictoChat and PictoChat 2. It would also add 27 new drawings as both of its predecessors did. Weather changes from PictoChat 2 would only be in forms where other drawings do not appear. This creates a total of 80 that can appear on the base stage at any given time.

Its a really bland and completely unreliable stage. It would have made my list if it wasn't already forgettable, honestly.

Not sure there are 10 returning stages I'd axe, but I would probably take out the Pokemon Stadiums and mash them into one.

Interesting idea. I think I'll focus cutting stages that either mechanically similar to another stage or comes from a game that already has a stage.

Remove
1. Great Cave Offensive

It's offensive we got another Super Star stage instead of something modern

2. Dreamland

It's just another battlefield and Green Greens does the theme better

3. Norfair

Its kinda tough choosing between Brinstar and Brinstar, but Brinstar just looks cooler and has a more unique stage layout.

4. Yoshi Story.

It's battlefield

5. Mario Bros

Cool concept, awful stage

6. Pokemon Stadium 2

I like the transformations in Stadium 1 better

7. Figure 8 circuit

It's just easy to cut Mario stages, especially since I'm adding more

8. Jungle Japes

Thematically similar to Kongo Jungle

9. Golden Plains

Thematically very similar to other Mario stages, and we have a lot of Mario stages

10. Pac-Land

It's awful, and poorly represents the franchise

New ones

1. Another Dimension

We need a modern Kirby stage, and this is one of the most iconic location, give us that theme too.

2. Castle Dedede

Using the Star Allies design, it's a staple location that hasn't been used

3. Bowser's Castle

See above, don't know how they'd go about it, but there's a lot of potential

4. Homecoming Hijinx

Modern DK stage, Tropical Freeze and very icy

5. Crafted Island

Modern Yoshi stage, I imagine the train will play some sort of role

6. SR388

Based on Samus Returns, making it both a classic and modern stage. I want a Metroid stage that takes place on the surface of an Alien planet

7. Rainbow Road

Doesn't have to be the 3DS stage, but we need a Rainbow Road

8. Pac-Maze

Again, doesn't have to be the 3DS stage but it feels necessary

9. Garreg Mach Monastery

I feel it's rare for a fire emblem game to have such a central and prominent location that it feels necessary to make this a stage

10. leftherian archipelago

I could've filled this whole list with Xenoblade stages, but I settled on Rex's home town. Nice view of the cloud see with Titans everywhere

The perpetual trash fire known as Planet Earth(tm)
THROW THE BUM OUT:
1. :hanenbow: (Electroplankton):
I think we can all agree that this stage sucks as a stage (really, water you can’t swim in?), but am I the only one who thinks it was pretty? Plus, it’s at least worth it for the green screen.

2. PAC-LAND: Like Hanenbow, it just sucks as a stage. Not to mention, like everyone else said, it poorly represents one of the most iconic video game characters ever. Why they dumped PAC-MAZE for a stage from glorified pre-MS Paint arcade game I will never know.

3. :npc: (Mother 3): It’s just a poor man’s Temple. Need I say more?

4. :75M: (Donkey Kong): If I wanted to play a stage where I’m basically just playing Donkey Kong, I’d just make it a smaller part of a bigger DK-themed level in a Melee-styled Adventure mode.

5. Great Cave Offensive (Kirby Super Star): Just a pointlessly large stage with artificial blast zones that Sakurai called “fun”. More like Great Space Offensive, am I right?:4pacman:

6. Windy Hill Zone (Sonic Lost World): I tried the demo for Lost World around the time it came out and couldn’t stand having to press a run button to make Sonic do what he always does, so I’m not really a fan of a stage that brings back those memories.

7. Coliseum (Fire Emblem): It’s just a poor man’s Arena Ferox, what more can I say?

8. New Donk City Hall (Super Mario Odyssey): After playing through that part of Odyssey, I’m actually kinda bummed that this wasn’t the NDC stage we got in Ultimate. All the current one has going for it is the musicians and Pauline, and that’s only just one song. A great one but still, one. And it doesn’t help that it’s one of the four new stages in Ultimate’s base game.

9. Midgar (FINAL FANTASY VII): It’s basically just Battlefield with Summons. That’s a pretty big stain on FF’s already meager Smash representation compared to even Dragon Quest.

10. Mario Bros.: I’m sorry but this stage is just unplayable. Going from one side of the screen to the other is a nice touch, but it makes it needlessly hard to tell what’s a blast zone and what’s not. Combine that with small breathing room to avoid enemies and—yeah, I don’t need to say anymore

What I’d add because the base game literally only has four new stages out of over a hundred:
1. Spill-Ville (Tomato Adventure):
This could be a travelling stage with Gimmicks tossed in for good measure. I know, not very original, but I just want some major Tomato Adventure representation. It’s my most wanted JP-only game to be localized.

2. Champion’s Maze (PAC-MAN Championship Edition): A more sparkly version of PAC-MAZE with the ability to eat several ghosts in a row at once.

3. Saturn Valley (EarthBound): Seeing as Magicant was a stage, it baffles me that Saturn Valley wasn’t one in at least the Wii U game. Maybe something akin to its appearance in Smash Flash 2?

4. New Donk Festival (Super Mario Odyssey): Now this is the New Donk Stage I crave. This has potential for a series of completely new DK layouts and even a layout of 25m!

5. Alola Poké Floats (Pokémon Sun and Moon): Not much more I can say, it’s Poké Floats over Alola with the occasional Guardians and Ultra Beasts.

6. Metropolis (Sonic Forces): A traveling stage with the airships able be used as platforms and a hazard every now and then to keep things interesting (at least more interesting than it was in Forces).

7. Oprah House (Fire Emblem Fates): One of the most memorable locations in the whole series as far as I’m concerned, and I’m shocked it wasn’t a stage. Here’s a mock-up of what it could like and play like by TKOWL TKOWL , who participated in the Smash Bros. Stage Creation contest way back when.

8. Gyromite: Basically a game of Gyromite, but the background is a living room with a fully-functional R.O.B. toy in said background.

9. Ripple Star (Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards): This is a stage I’d want if Adeleine and Ribbon were ever playable playable fighters. The stage takes place in front of the castle itself, near the fountain, with the occasional appearance by Dark Matter. Once again inspired by a mock-up by TKOWL TKOWL .

10. Dr. Mario: This stage was originally going to be in Smash 4, and it’s a real shame it was never fully realized because my vision of it is the pills being platforms, the Viruses being Danger Zones (hopefully done right), and both kinds disappearing when same-colored pills line up with Viruses of their color.

I almost managed to add the Bowser’s Castle stage from Mario Odyssey, but I couldn’t fit it in.

The stages i'd remove:
  • 75m. No explanation needed.

  • Mario Bros. The corridors are incredibly tight, leading you to being practically stuck in hit stun until you go off the side. It also screen wraps, which sucks. This stage would be perfectly fine if the blue platforms were light and the power of the hazards were toned down.

  • Flat Zone X. Don't get me wrong, this stage is unique and perfectly represents the Game & Watch, but play-ability wise, this stage sucks. The hazards are too powerful, large and obnoxious, and the stage is incredibly small, leading to early kills to the hazards or powerful items on almost every stock. And just to make it worse, the edges of the screen and blocked by a layer of foreground.

  • Living Room. Nothing big, it's just plain and boring. Also the blocks falling from the sky disrupt the fight.

  • Balloon Fight. Who designed this stage? It is small, the base platforms are light so jank in guaranteed, the little lightning balls are too hard to see and are extremely powerful, it screen wraps, the flippers are consistently in the way, and the stage looks hecking gross. IMO this is the worst stage.

  • Guar Plain. No explinaton should be needed. The layout sucks, Metal Face is a large annoyance, and it's way too large.

  • New Pork City. While I know this is supposed to be a bigger stage, the top blastzone is way too high, which is my main problem with it. It takes forever to kill on this stage, whether it's 8-Player of not. Also it's generally boring.

  • The Great Cave Offensive. This stage suffers from being too big and not really using the blastzones. Killing with the lava isn't as easy as it sounds, and the while the gimmick is unique, it sucks.

  • Dream Land GB. Pretty much a worse Pac-Land. The screen-size is too small and like Flat Zone, the edges are blocked up by a later of foreground. It's just the worst scrolling stage.

  • Coliseum. It's just a walk-off Arena Ferox. It isn't bad, but it isn't needed.

Stages i'd add:

  • Bowser's Castle (Mario)
  • Dark Star (Kirby)
  • Bramble Blast (Donkey Kong)
  • Caves (Pikmin)
  • Tanked Up Trouble (Donkey Kong)
  • Stack Up (R.O.B.)
  • Deep Sea Metro (Splatoon)
  • Tetris
  • Re-Add Pokefloats
  • Re-Add Pac-Maze
very original stages

Also, am I the only person here who likes Palutena's Temple, Pac-Land, and Hanenbow?

You would leave Xenoblade and Game & Watch (but more notably Xenoblade) without a stage?

You monster.

These stages I would remove even without trading for new ones, and I think the game would be even better

New Pork City
Dream Land GB
Mute City SNES
Ballon Fight
The Great Cave Offensive
Flat Zone X
PAC-LAND
Kongo Jungle
Tomodachi Life
Palutena's Temple

I will not remove 75m. just because I like the visual of the stage on omega and battlefield form.. but just because that...
