I recently picked up project M as a form of practice for melee until I can get a new copy of the game, and I'm having issues with everything. I can't figure out how to grab the ledge really fast to edge guard someone, I can't wave dash properly, I can't dash dance properly, I mean hell I can't even ****in tilt consistently or short hop consistently. My brother who has literally never played project M before beat my ass with Olimar using zero strategy and just throwing **** at me, and I was trying to implement as much tactics as I could and it seemed like no matter what I did, I always lost.

So basically, what are ways I practice to get better at this super simple mechanical stuff that it seems like everyone can do, but I'm sitting in a corner slamming my head against a wall because it seems like I can't figure out how to do stuff that a three year old can do. I'm getting incredibly frustrated with this game and I could really use some advice.

also I use X/Y for jumping, would switched to using the analog stick to jump help with short hops?
No. The analog stick should not be used for jumping except in extremely weird cases where it is the most convenient way to jump (such as when you want to jump cancel and up-smash).

While Project M has made some things a little easier (at least that's what I've heard), it is still a hard game. Melee is an extremely hard game, and Project M is supposed to be as close to Melee as possible.

My brother who has literally never played project M before beat my *** with Olimar using zero strategy and just throwing **** at me, and I was trying to implement as much tactics as I could and it seemed like no matter what I did, I always lost.
It still counts as strategy, even if it is easy. Besides, if it wins, why change your strategy?

Anyway, what is going wrong with your wavedashing and dash dancing? I can't really help you there unless you tell me what's going wrong. Does your controller work properly?
Grabbing the edge really quickly is usually done by wavedashing off the edge and then fast-falling as soon as you are no longer on the stage.

Learning advanced tech - especially when you're still doing it inconsistently - will make you significantly worse for a while. It's a long term investment that only pays off once you've put in many many hours of practice. Once you can do it consistently and see where it actually needs to be applied is when it starts to become useful. It's great to learn that stuff, but for now you're going to beat people like your brother by spacing around his attacks and having a better gameplan going in, not by having more knowledge of advanced tech. Work on punishing the stupid stuff that he does. If he throws pikmin at you the whole game, get in his face, wait, dodge it, and punish him for it. That's a legitimate plan to get around projectile spamming. The other stuff will come with practice.

How long had you practiced Melee before this? Advanced tech just takes a while to even be okay at, let alone perfect, let alone incorporate. I had the same problem, my friend would play Falco and just stand in one place shooting lasers and then dair me if I got to close to the ledge, no tech skill at all.

I figured out that you use wavedash to edge guard through youtube yesterday, and I guess for the time being I'm not really having any actual problems considering the amount of times I've actually put into this game. Cause I've only been playing project M for like 2 days and I came straight out of brawl into project M.

So thanks for the help guys, I'll actually use this.
