i haven't played ssbm in a long time and I want to learn my favorite characters used to be dr mario, marth and link I want to know everything there is to know and all the tricks like wavedashing, lcanceling, etc.
If you just want to look cool vs the AI, any of these characters are good choices. Otherwise, pick Marth or MAYBE Dr. Mario. I used to be a Link main (and still pull him out sometimes) but I play a lot of Falco now because Link has major problems when you get beyond low-level play. I'd focus on Marth if you think he fits you, because he is very good at dealing with the strongest characters in the game. He also has a strong combo and juggle game, and his long range sword means you don't have to be up-close and personal to deal good damage, unlike with Doctor Mario. This is a very rough breakdown, of course, but I think you get the idea that Marth has the fewest weaknesses.
The explanation of wavedashing and L-cancelling above, as well as looking at where to go on the boards, is a good idea.
For names to search on Youtube, Mew2King plays some Marth, and Dr. PP has also played Marth some [so for these two you should search their name and the word Marth], although one of the best current Marths would be PewPewU and maybe The Moon. Shroomed is the only Doctor Mario main I really know of.
Four other things to keep in mind (some dealing with Marth), related to recovering from offstage [you'll of course see this in videos and as you look at guides, and may already know all of this yourself, but I assume you plan to play some and test some, so this is stuff to keep in mind] :
1) When you get knocked offstage, DON'T jump right away - if you wait to jump and get hit out again, you can still jump for recovery, while if you jump right away, you can still get hit away and then might not make it back. This is true for every character.
2) Airdodge is a recovery move, but use it sparingly, as it leaves you open a while and doesn't go very far. It can be the perfect way to get onstage if you see a smash attack being charged, as you can dodge through the attack and thus avoid the damage and knockback. This is also true for every character (and especially important for Jigglypuff and Yoshi).
3) If you use only the first hit of your side+b (dancing blade) in midair as you recover to the stage, the first times you do so will actually slightly boost the total length of your recovery (doing it a third, fourth, or more times only stalls you, though stalling offstage to wait out someone's ledge invincibility can be useful). You must land back on stage to get this side+b benefit back (if you grab the ledge and get knocked off again, side+B won't boost your recovery). My explanation might not be that clear, but all the Marth players I mentioned above do this regularly, so you can watch a video of them and understand what I mean.
4) Marth has decent air speed when he can act (prior to using up+b, Dolphin Slash), but his lateral movement speed is truly terrible after using it. You should fall toward the stage (often using side+b as you fall toward it to slow your decent and get extra distance) and use up+B once you are almost under the ledge (not right under it on Battlefield or you'll hit the stage lip), as this increases the overall range of your recovery.
