How to watch out for malicious codes and the like

I recently was getting a rom and after I started burning it to a disc, I realized through other software it had no partitions. Realizing this, I looked into it a bit more and realized it was malicious software essentially and would do at least nothing but likely could screw up my Wii.

Now, how to avoid this:

Using Codes:

Get your codes from reputable sources. USBGecko's official codelist, Wiird codes, and ones on SWF in official threads are safe. If its some random person posting, look for the code somewhere else and see if its the same. If it sounds too good to be true, it might be. Try to make sure your Wii isn't bricked. Make sure the new source is more reputable, if its from Phantom Wings, Y.S., or someone well known likewise and you can verify the post was theirs, go for it. Otherwise, be cautious.

In before lock :(

Using Homebrew apps:

Find them at Wiibrew.org. If its there, and it doesn't have a brick warning, its safe. If it has a brick warning, make sure you use it well and your safe. If you get it on another site, see if its made by Team Twiizer's or WiiGator's (infamously) or another well known group. Be sure to verify stuff.

WAD's:

If your using WAD's, don't make your own unless you know what your doing. There are legal ways to do it but most ways aren't very successful or work, so make sure you know how to do it before you make your own. Read the literature.

Nand Backup

Get Bootmii and use this application through Homebrew and choose to install it as a Boot2 replacement (ignore any other functions it has as they are not sanctioned here, only use it if you already have Homebrew installed). Then, choose to prep an SD card with your stuff and it will make a bootmii folder in the root. Now, reset your Wii and it should pop up a different menu (don't worry, this is removable easily). Now, go to the last option and there click and then go to the red and insert a different SD card. Choose to extract your Nand and it will extract it here. Choose to format it as you wish, this is literally a backup of your current Wii menu (528 mb) so you can restore it at any time, so your Wii is almost brick proof.

Enjoy.

You could have just checked if it worked on an emulator...

turn around....
Dolphin only successfully emulates certain games from certain regions, no guarantee it can be ran via Dolphin.
