How to Utilt

I'm new to smashboards, and fairly new to melee. I often have trouble performing utilts consistently, as I almost always jump or usmash. Any tips on how to fix this issue?

Next time, ask your general questions here:
http://smashboards.com/threads/official-faq-and-qna-thread-ask-your-questions-here.230020/

A tilt is done by 'tilting' or gently moving the control stick in one direction. The up tilt can be performed by tilting your control stick up (but not completely upwards as that would result in a jump) and hitting A while at it. If you're getting upsmashes, it means you're not tilting your control stick but rather pushing or smashing it upwards.

Learning to be precise is something that you get with practice. Remember that, like Alulim said, you don't need to move the control stick all the way to the top in order to do a Utilt. You'll always get used to buffering the input, like doing something and during its lag you start holding up slightly, allowing you to just press A afterwards to do a Utilt. (This applies to wavedashing, or specific situations like using Marth's forward B into Utilt, falling aeriel attacks into Utilt with several characters, etc)

Also, welcome to the Smashboards! And yeah, directing small questions like this to the FaQ thread will usually get you answers faster, and reduce the clutter on the forums by having less small threads.

Maybe try practicing switching between running and walking while dash dancing? It could help you learn the different feelings to controller sensitivity while building muscle memory for left/right tilts. Then it's just applying that to up and down.

You either learn to tilt the joystick an exact distance each time

or you can just push up all the way every time but just not do it fast. Either way will take practice if you have trouble with it, no way around it.

I struggled with this for a while but like everyone else said it just takes practice. Being technical in this game is not always about doing everything fast, but more so precise. Find the sweet spot on your control stick for tilts and get used to it. Then work on combos on CPU's or even other players in friendlies where you can utilize the up tilt and work on moving the stick into tilt position coming out of other moves. Takes a while, but you'll get it eventually. Tilts really give your combo game that little extra umph, helps your spacing game, and can also be simply used as a quick attack with decent knockback.
