How to make dot shading stand out?

First 2 MiiVerse artworks I did, I'm not very good at the moment and kind of rushed these because of limited time. Any advice on perfecting dot shading?

The term is referred to as Stippling and can be used to represent value in a piece. What you want to do is make the dots in a certain area more abundant if you are trying to show shadows and more scattered when it is a lighter area.

I think you would have the best luck if your pieces had alot of darks and lights to really show the range. Plan out where you want the lights to hit a character and stipple accordingly. Hope this helps!
