It has several environments available now. I'm a fan of the MATE edition (I believe a fork of GNOME 2). It's just so simple and responsive. There are GNOME 3, KDE, and a few other environments as well.

I'm a fan of LXDE, if only because I run Linux on my really old laptop. When I did use Linux Mint, I preferred the Cinnamon desktop environment.

Editing three months later to announce that MATE kicks ass on a desktop, and that Crunchbang is pretty awesome on an old computer.
