How to do the meteor smash with Mario

Can somebody tell me how to do the meteor smash with Mario?

Just tilt forward and A button when in the air.

There is a sweet spot you have to hit. It might not work if you're too close or too far. Also it might only work during the beginning of the move rather than the end of the move. Just experiment in training mode until you get a feel for it.
