How to Bounce off shield with down air?

Im not completly sure why sometimes my character bounces off shield and sometimes does not. How exactly does this work?

When you fastfall (press down while airborne) while down-airing you go trough shields. If not you bounce off them

Yeah, this technique is super important. It is safe on shield much of the time when you bounce, and people often punish themselves trying to punish you.
