How the heck do I install custom characters into Project M Ex?

Look, I'm a stupid idiot. But the real thing here is that it shouldn't be that hard for me to install custom characters with files that are already suited for Brawl EX. However, I seem to be goofing it up! So how do I say... replace the Ridley in Project M Ex default with the Classic Ridley overhaul or put in some newer characters?
