Hi guys,

So recently, I found out that my favorite way of playing Smash is to have character loyalty. I define character loyalty as someone who mains the same character throughout every single game in the Smash series. In my case, I'm loyal to only a single character in the Smash Bros. series which is:4mario:. I pretty much solo-main this character at a competitive level regardless of his viability, because I absolutely love him. However, I do have a small issue. I like to play a lot of characters, but I also want to improve at the same time by playing a few characters. I only like to main characters that I'm loyal towards. Because I want to be good with max two characters, Mario took one of the two spots for each installment in Smash (except for the forbidden Brawl mod, :4mario::4sonic: took both spots so I'm good here). For that, I was planning on picking up a second fighter to tag along with the plumber in every installment. While I came close to be loyal to some other characters, I never managed to find another character that I love as much as Mario. Every time, there has to be a X character that I really like, but in one game, they actually have something that bother me or just don't like the way X character is designed in that one game. For that, I want to ask a question to you guys: What questions do you ask yourselves to see if you're loyal to X character? This is how I proceeded:
  • Do I like the playstyle of the character? (Good combo game, balanced stat, unique mechanic or trait that distinguishes him from the rest of the cast, decently fast, not being combo food since I hate getting comboed hard)
  • Do I really like the character? (Design, looks, not annoying voice, did I play his home-series games? If yes, do I love these games, good personality in Smash and his own series)
  • Do I love the way the character is designed (not being broken or ''too good'' (not like :pikachu64::foxmelee::falcomelee::marthmelee::metaknight::popo:), is he fun to watch in tournaments?, hype, can perform ''cool'' plays and mixups, interesting)
  • Does the character respect all of the three criteria mentioned above in all the games that he appears in?
Thank you so much for the early response! Let me know what you guys think of this. I know, I'm a very strict guy! EDIT: I do not count Project M as being part of my character loyalty trend, but I still play Mario nonetheless.

The way to tell if you're loyal to X is if you'll willingly main the character both during their glory years and their garbage years, playing as them regardless of viability is really all there is to it imo.

I see. The fact that I'm strict makes it easier for me to restrain the characters that I'm potentially loyal to and at the same time, it makes it easier for me to find a main. At the same time however, it can severely limit the diversity of the characters. If I was playing for fun in all the games, I would be loyal to so many characters, but then, I won't consider being a loyalist at this point. Maybe the other right character for me will come along as time will go on. Who knows?

Perhaps one can argue for being a character loyalist through all of the patches of Smash 4. It has certainly been turbulent. This aside... Your question has already been answered, so I'll chime in with an anecdote.

I was generally a Kirby loyalist. Since the N64 days. I only became aware of competitive Smash late in Brawl's life and into Smash 4.

Competitive Smash ruined character loyalty for me, but I gained proficiency in its' place. So... I have a skilled Kirby, I suppose.

He's far from my main, but he was my first. And to that, I'm grateful. I'll never lose touch with what started my journey into the Smash community.

I think I'll stay loyal to only:4mario:for the moment. I just have to believe that the right character to tag along with Mario will come at the right time. Maybe Smash on the Switch will be the right one.

I'm almost a loyalist. I mained Fox in 64 bc I liked him as a character and through the Melee years. (I know he's very viable in both games I got lucky) He was the first character I ever played in both games. But then Brawl came out and I didn't like Brawl Fox. I wanted to main him forever but I couldn't in Brawl. In PM I used Fox (prob used Mewtwo the most and Fox 2nd most but I consider them both my mains) but in Sm4sh Fox's play style seems to have changed so much I don't enjoy the character anymore.
But like I'll always have a pocket Samus (bc I love most Metroid games), Puff (bc she's just fun, I still play a lot of Puff in Sm4sh), and I've always had a pocket Marth and Falcon bc I liked their play style.
I don't consider the characters I've been loyal to my strongest characters or my mains but like no matter how bad Puff is I will always have a Puff secondary (maybe tertiary) and I always have fun playing her.
As the games change some characters change a lot and others don't change as much. So I think it's easier to stay loyal to a character that plays similarly more so than just how "viable" that character is. It's also easier to stay loyal to characters whose games you enjoy. So bc I love Super Metroid and Metroid Prime and played NES Metroid as a kid I always enjoy Samus.
Staying loyal to just one character or even a handful of characters means you are playing the game for fun and most likely you have an overall better attitude about the game so you're less likely to be salty, complain, rage quit, etc. and i think that honestly makes for an enjoyable experience not just for yourself but for those you play with.

I was a loyalist until Brawl. I mained fox for 64 and melee and then when brawl came out and they changed his back air which kind of put me off of him. I tried other characters and found a new main in snake but he didn't get to smash 4 where I just started playing as half the roster. I tried going back to fox but something just isn't clicking with me for him.

Yeah. Being loyal to just that one character you love so much is really my most enjoyable way of playing Smash. No matter how much I get bodied or get destroyed, I always stick to that character. Plus, being a character loyalist allows yourself to identify (for fun) which Smash character you are. When I play:4mario:, I feel like a more simple person and someone who likes to freestyle (play whatever play style I want). So yeah, Mario is kinda my avatar character. I might have found other characters that I might be loyal to (but I want to choose one of them since I want to master two characters and be specialists towards these two):
  • :4sonic:: Alongside Mario, I'm a pretty huge Sonic fan. I like his bait and punish playstyle and despite him being hated by the gaming community in general (not just Smash 4), I will still defend him. He has a big place in my heart as a gamer.
  • :4lucina:: I thought she was more boring than Marth at the very beginning, but she's much more than that. The more I played her, the more I started to like her as much as Marth. She may not have the tipper, but I really like the fact that she's slightly different from her ancestor, making some MUs slightly easier for her. Plus, I honestly do like her personality more than the Altean Prince and it's because of her and Robin that I start to love the Fire Emblem series with Awakening.

Yeah...I am personally loyal to :peachmelee::peach::4peach:. But with the introduction of :rosalina: and :4lucina: in SSB4, they've become my primary characters with :4peach: being a secondary of mine as y'all sugar pies can see by my signature. I'm looking to brush up on technical skill which mine is pretty light, and the princess of Mushroom Kingdom is quite the technical character.

When I face an opponent who's weaker or stronger than my main, I take them seriously and take caution in terms of how their skill level showcases the whole fight. If they continue to fight continuously with the same character, or if they're some who main the same character consistently throughout SSB64 to SSB4, then that's how I can indicate a great deal of character loyalty.
Even back in the day of launch before where some characters were at their weakest (:4lucina::4marth::4mewtwo:), that shows how loyal and dedicated they are to their characters. It's admirable and respectable to see some opponents defeat me with ones who've been under-powered for some time (:4ganondorf::4jigglypuff::4zelda:) because it shows the strength of the player's dedication and commitment to those characters. Even some who still remained at their weakest in this iteration of Smash (:4falco:).

If you solo main a character, that's fine. But there's nothing wrong with trying out other characters either. This installment of Super Smash has introduced me to a lot of characters I've never heard of, and I won't deny that I those characters out of curiosity (:4bayonetta::4cloud::4shulk::4zss:). Character loyalty is overall, a identity of the series that you're committed to and the character you love.
  • :4link::4tlink:: Throughout childhood, I've always been a Zelda fan before it became replaced by Fire Emblem through teenage-hood. So it was pretty obvious that Link back then, was one of my most favorite characters that still stand today. The combat, dungeon exploration, side-quests and world of Zelda games were what attracted me to stick to the series. Just so happened in Brawl, Wind Waker was my favorite Zelda at the time. So Link was dropped in favor of Toon Link, who I was most excited for when I found out he was in Brawl by SSE. If you were to ask me what happened to Toon Link now, I'd say that he'd be a pocket character at this point. That's because...
When Smash 4 was being developed, I restarted on my main selection and thought hard on who I wanted to go by. I was initially interested in :4littlemac: and :4robinm: because I was interested in how their designs could be implemented. Unfortunately, there were some traits of their move-set design that I just could not sync with, so I eventually went to...
  • :4lucina:: One of the heroines of Fire Emblem Awakening, a game that I had a great affliction with prior to Sm4sh, so she was already a considered candidate. I picked her up since day one and since then, through her days of becoming better than her under-powered self, Lucina has become the character I go by as of today. She were to return, she would remain as my main for years to come. The reason I main characters was because I like their game/series. Now, I am starting to feel like I'm outgrowing Fire Emblem and I have a changed opinion of Awakening (I still appreciate it nonetheless), but Lucina will always have a special place as my main in the world of Super Smash. Here's to a strong and everlasting commitment to the Future Ylissean Warrior Princess!
  • :4ryu:: I've been interested in Ryu for a while. The idea of him being designed and coming from a series I've been interested in has inspired me to consider this character. But overall, it was the players and the capabilities showcased in tournaments that ultimately inspired me to choose him as my second main / secondary. Ryu seems like a character whose design is based on skill, so naturally I became fascinated with him. I also have a feeling that he'll stay in the long run as well. That is, ASSUMING he stays.
I don't know if I think I'm in any position to tell you that I'm loyal to Link since I've dropped him, but I remain optimistic about his competitive potential in this game regardless as I believe SSB4 is where he's at his absolute best in. Long live the Hero of Time!

Wow. That was such powerful words, my friend. Mixing character loyalty and diversity of characters is something that I wish the most and it's definitely playing off. Like my character loyalty has been all over the place over the past few months.
Originally, I was a:4mario::4marth::4sonic:fanatic. I absolutely love these characters due to how they play and their home series game that I love so much. They were other characters such as:4falcon::4shulk::4darkpit::4feroy::4kirby:that I love in every Smash game they appeared, but these fighters were not characters that I actually wanted to main due to some issues that actually do bother me such as someone being slow in movement, slow frame data and getting comboed hard (which I don't like at all if I want to main someone). However, things have changed since then. I began to realize some things about:4marth::4sonic:that I wasn't particularly fond of. For Sonic, it was on how I tend to rely on Spin Dash to mostly rack up damage, and I got tired of it. As a result, I didn't find the blue blur that much anymore. Luckily, I have PM to fix that issue, because I absolutely love playing the blue hedgehog in that mod. So for that, I was considered to be somewhat loyal to the PM ver. of the fastest thing alive. As for Marth, it didn't turn out the same way. I loved him in Brawl and Smash 4, but when it comes to Melee, this is where I have a problem. That may be just me, but I'm not a fan of characters who can theoretically win every MU in the game (aka going even at worst). Yes, I know that every character takes a lot of skill to play and to win some MUs, but I can't help being bothered by that issue. I mostly feel this way with :pikachu64::foxmelee::falcomelee::marthmelee::metaknight:. While I still love Marth today, I don't think I'll like him the same way as I did before. Ever since, I became loyal to just Mario, because he was the only character in the entire series that I feel I have no problem maining. However, I wanted to give a chance to other characters, because my view changes of the game changes over time. I reconsidered picking up:4sonic:again and:4lucina:this time around instead of Marth. Plus, playing more characters is just more fun than just playing Mario, even though I feel I can play the plumber for a very long time without switching characters.

Thank you so much guys for your response. I feel I found a character that I might be loyal towards and pick up that fighter to tag alongside Mario. It's very interesting on what you guys all have to say regarding character loyalty, and I highly appreciate it. :)

By the time I was playing SSB4, I don't have a single "main" in the sense of one character far above all others. I have what I'd call my "short list" (3 fighters who could all be a "main"), a "long list" (secondary), and an "extended list" for those fighters I have an interest in but not much skill/comfort comparatively.

It's mainly a way I organize the characters I play. As far as loyalty goes, Fox has been a mainstay of my smash since the beginning in SSB64, and I have stuck by Fox through Melee and Brawl. Nowadays Fox has to share the honor with Marth and Lucario on my short list, but I have never not had a strong Fox in my Smash arsenal. Why? As it is said in Fiddler on the Roof: Tradition!

That said, I do truly hold my Fox at the same level as fellow short-listers Marth and Lucario. It's party a matter of aesthetic appeal, and partly a matter of playstyle comfort, and a little bit how these three can generally cover one-another's weaknesses. If I'm having trouble against a certain fighter (or player for that matter), I find I can swap out anyone on the short list for another to ease the stress of the matches.

Basically, I am comfortable taking any of my short list into a top-level competitive match: that's what earns a fighter a place on my short list.

I do get what you mean by ''short list''. I did the same thing when I first asked myself if I actually have character loyalty towards a fighter in Smash. I wanted to combine character loyalty along with having fun while still play at a reasonable competitive level (but I don't care about winning. I just want to learn.) So to be precise, I asked myself that question:
What is/are my (2) favorite character(s) to play in each Smash game? (My short list is having two fighters since I personally think that more than two can hinder my improvement as a player). I'll give my example:
  • Smash 64: my only character that I like to play competitively is :mario64:.
  • Melee: from that point, I take a look at my two or one favorite character in 64 to see if they are still my most enjoyable characters to play. If one or two of them are not part, I reject these characters and try to find new characters. I try to pick up a new character. I don't pick 64 veterans, because I want to be loyal to a character in every Smash installment, not to one specific game. So I decided to look up for a Melee character. Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to find any Melee character that I enjoy either because I don't like how they're designed in competitive or just uninteresting. So I only sticked to :mariomelee: just like the last game. You can say that :drmario: can technically be my 2nd favorite, but I don't like to be loyal towards two clones.
  • Brawl: so I applied the same principle that I did for Melee, but this time, I try to find Brawl veterans and ignore 64 and Melee veterans. For the first time, my two favorite characters in Brawl are:mario2::sonic:.
  • Project M: I don't count this mod as being part of the character loyalty trend, but I still pick my two favorite characters. I didn't expect this, but it's the same as Brawl, so Sonic and Mario.
  • Smash 4: again, same thing! Unfortunately,:4sonic:is not one of my two favorite characters, so I dropped him in Brawl to retain character loyalty consistency. So I try to find a Smash 4 newcomer to see if I like any of them. To my surprise, my top two are:4mario::4lucina:.
So as you may notice,:4mario:was one of my top two characters in every Smash game. So I found a character that I was loyal to along with:4lucina:so far despite her being only in one Smash game. I could not stay consistent with:4sonic:unfortunately and it seems I always keep having one character or changing the second character in every game. I know. I am very strict and limited with my choice of characters, but it really does help me find fighters that I really like to play competitively and find out who I potentially have character loyalty with. Thank goodness I have one.

EDIT: As for your ''long list'' and ''extended list'', I don't have something like this. I just play everyone else for fun (mainly Smash 4, because I really do like to play a lot of characters in that game like around 45 even though I'm not that great with all those 45).

How to know if you have character loyalty:
Look at me.
I'm character loyalty incarnate.
This is the only time I've not been using a Lucina avatar in this site since I joined it. The avatar is more symbolic than anything else anyway.

I tend to find it hard to go up against Rosalina, "unless" I use Rosalina myself. In Smash 3DS, whenever I played Classic mode, I avoided any routes that make you go up against a Super Mario series fighter, due to the chance that Rosalina will be your opponent. However, you could still get Rosalina as an opponent in the 4-player free-for-all matches.

I always gravitated toward characters that I would win with or thought were fun to play. When melee came out and I started to play it more seriously, I more or less stuck to :marthmelee: and :mewtwomelee:, in spite of wanting to play :bowsermelee: who just wasn't very good.

Brawl comes along, and although :marth: is present I more or less got tired of his playstyle. :bowser2: still sucked and :mewtwomelee: was replaced by :lucario:, I picked up :olimar: for my love of the Pikmin games and :dedede: because he was goofy af. As I entered brawls competitive community, and attended locals I had most success with :dedede:. Played Project M briefly becuase Mewtwo was in it but overall it fell short of Brawl + for me and the friends I played with.

Smash 4 comes along and it's hype as ****. Unfortunately, :4dedede: is nerfed to the envy of a football. :4olimar: gets a much better recover and combo game but feels underwhelming. :4bowser:finally playable, doesn't really match my style. Regardless, :4dedede: still feels natural to me, and given the size of the roster, as well as the difficulty of his matchups, I stick with him. :4mewtwo:and :4feroy: come out and I couldn't be happier. But since Im more into competitve play than before, I've focused on :4mewtwo:whom is my competitive "Main" but ultimately :4dedede: remains my best, most refined and comfortable selection.

I don't find it fun. I like to play multiple characters.
Understandable. Even though I'm a loyalist, I like to play multiple characters. If I put characters into the ''loyalist'' list, there would be a lot. Other than:4mario::4lucina:, I have:4samus::4kirby::4luigi::4falcon::4marth::4ganondorf::4drmario::4feroy::4myfriends::4sonic::wolf::4shulk::4megaman::4darkpit::4cloud:that I really like to play in every single Smash game that they appear.

My mains typically change with each new installment. That's not to say that my like of each character changes by the next game. Each character undergoes such tremendous changes every game, in addition to a new engine every game as well. There's also the factor of time spent playing that particular game to potentially adjust to a main based on skill level, playstyle, enjoyment of a certain character, etc, etc.

My current mains are Cloud, Ike, and Ganondorf. Cloud is my de facto main, as he grants me the most mileage when I am playing at my absolute best. Any less than that and I'm subject to severe volatility in my play.

Ike, however, became a subject of my loyalty at the end of Brawl's lifetime. I dedicated a number of months to learning his super-defense oriented playstyle. Though it was never strong enough to be my true main of Brawl (which remained as Wario).

Ganondorf was my original main in Brawl; and his reign lasted for a number of years. Eventually, I fell away and went to Wario. However, there's something about Sm4sh Ganon that is so alluring and irresistible that I cannot help but play and get better at him. So there's some slight loyalty there. I never was good a Melee Ganon, so it's out of the question.

Character loyalty was important for me until the end of Brawl. I used Jigglypuff in 64 (when I figured her out), Melee and Brawl. However, I had trouble against a friend's Zelda for a looong time. So I picked up Sheik and grew very fond of her FTilt, needles, up air and Up B. And I played her with a Wiimote+Nunchuck setup (bizarre I know but it somehow clicked and felt flexible). I was able to dispatch my friend in such a short span of time and never had much of a Zelda problem again. All from trying something different.
In Smash 4 I used Dark Pit for a year because I tried him out as a joke character; I had no idea how the character functioned, and I wasn't on here yet. I did eventually figure him out and learned a great deal about neutral and pushing my advantage, and I love him for that experience. I eventually dropped him because his balanced moveset got beaten out by characters with polarizing options. My current main is Ryu (about 13 months) and I've been very happy with him most of the time. I do get curious about other characters though, and feel character loyalty can prevent you form discovering new peaks possible with other characters.
Right now I'm interested in trying Olimar (nothing to do with Izaw's vid btw). And who knows...one day I might return to Sheik!

If I really love the character as a character and love their playstyle (especially if they're mid tier or lower), I'm loyal to maining them. That's why I put lots of work into DK (and Charizard to a lesser extent).

Wow. This is actually working out. I managed to find another character that I love other than:4mario::4lucina:in quite a month which is:4falcon:. However, I decided to main these characters in different games (if I was loyal to only Mario and Lucina, I would've just stuck to Smash 4). So basically I would stick to Sonic in PM and Falcon in Melee. Again guys thanks for the response. xD

I'm loyal to characters that I like so :4peach:, :4fox:, :wolf:, :4lucario:, :4mewtwo:, :4jigglypuff:are the ones I mostly use and will never give up on them and my love for them will never stop but I also have a list of other characters I play as through out the games so here is my list.

64: :fox64: - Been a fan of Star Fox 64 and he was my favorite character and main from the start, love his playstyle.
:jigglypuff64: - She was one of my favorite pokemon during that time and I was surprized to see her in SSB64

Melee:

:peachmelee: - My true main, I was so happy to see her in Melee being so over excited when first seeing the Melee trailer at E3 was so speechless, I love her playstyle especially her floating ability and her move set brought back nostalgic feelings from her past games so I've been loyal to :peachmelee: ever since.

:foxmelee:: Still love him in this game and still a big Star Fox fan but is now my second main in Melee .

:jigglypuffmelee:: Happy to see her return and I loved her peach crown.

:mewtwomelee:: I was very surprised to see him in Melee so I gave him a try and I liked his floaty playstyle and I liked Mewtwo.

:roymelee:: Just like everyone else I didn't know who he was and I gave him a try and I liked him.

Brawl:

:peach:: loved her new design and new moves but was weirded out by her second jump.

:wolf:: My new second main I was so very surprised to see him in Brawl like it was really unexpected, his playstyle was very different from Fox and being strong so he became my second main.

:fox:: Fox still has a special place in my heart so he remained as one of my mains being 3rd in Brawl. It was nice to see his new character design.

:lucario:: A good replacement for Mewtwo even though I was sad Mewtwo didn't return in Brawl I think that Lucario filled that void for me since they were kind of the same but less floaty.

:jigglypuff:: Of course I can't forget jigglypuff still fun to play as.

Smash 4:

For Smash 4 I really have a lot of characters that I play as because their playstyles all seem fun.

Top 3 mains: :4peach:, :4fox:, :4lucario:

Secondary: :4mewtwo:, :4jigglypuff:, :4feroy:, :4bowser:, :4yoshi:

Third characters: :4falco:, :4roy:, :rosalina:, :4charizard:, :4zelda:, :4littlemac:, :4wiifitm:, :4bayonetta2:

For Fun: :4greninja:, :4robinm:, :4duckhunt:, :4corrin:

I mostly play all these characters in Smash 4 in order but I play my top 3 mains the most, I was devastated that Wolf didn't return in Smash 4 and was worried that what's her name might replace him as DLC or the smash ballet! As you can see I played as more characters with each new game and I can't wait to see what new characters will be added in the Switch version of the game and I'm hoping for :wolf: and :snake: to return. Anyway I seem to have gone off topic so I'll just say that I'm loyal to :4peach:and :4fox: because they are my favorite characters not just in the Smash Bros games but in general as well, since I'm also a big fan of the Mario and Star Fox franchises.

Character Loyalty is great, so long as I can enjoy a nice group of secondaries each game. I picked :ness64: and :yoshi64: up way back in the days of 64. I haven't always had them as mains, because competitive viability matters to me, but in every game, those two have at least been trained up as my best secondaries.

Even in Melee, where :nessmelee: is honestly terrible, I still learned some stuff to make him a decent pick in doubles.

In Brawl, :yoshi2: was my number four, behind :lucas::olimar: and :ness2:. The quartet were basically all I ever played in that game, and I loved it.

In Smash 4 I play as way too many characters, and even if I put more work into :4olimar: or :4robinm:, my :4yoshi: and :4ness: are still tournament ready whenever I need or want them.

Oh, and :samusmelee: is a funny retroactive case, where I picked her up for Melee and liked her so much that I later added her to my roster in all the other Smash games.

I like variety, but having skills transfer between four different games after years of play feels fantastic.

Yeah. I try to have variety as well by selecting my top 2 characters in each game and see if I'm willing to be loyal to these characters (64, Melee and Brawl::4mario::4falcon:. Smash 4::4mario::4lucina:). So yeah I like Mario in every single game, and I really love to play Falcon and Lucina. I have her in Smash 4 as a secondary to my Mario. However, for Falcon, the thing that holds me back from being loyal to him is his iteration in Melee, because he felt a bit uncontrollable at first. But I really want to be loyal to him (because I'm comfortable and I like to play him in all the Smash games), but it might be because of how he controls in Melee that holds me back of being truly faithful to Falcon. Maybe with some practice, I can actually put some work, because I really want to pick him up and I love this character so much. If I really can't, than that will be unfortunate. However, I love how Sonic is in PM, so I actually solo main him in that mod.

Some of my favorite charecters are considered C - E tier: :4pacman::4alph::4falco::4shulk::4dedede: and more.

While playing with friends I even make jokes about there tier placings. But if you have fun and find yourself actually GOOD with the
charecter then they're worth keeping around.

Character loyalty is a willingness to play a character throughout good times and bad. Some attribute character loyalty throughout games such as me maining Marth for three games in a row.

However, I also attribute character loyalty in tournament as using a character you're not sure if you can win and you lost with in g1, but you're going all in, believing in your character.
