How do you hold needles?

Probably a very stupid question with a very simple answer but I can't figure out how to hold needles and like use them later. I primarily play Smash 4 but I kinda wanna start playing Project M and it is way different so thank you!

In Sm4sh, pressing the button once will start charging needles, but after that you can let go. I believe you shield to hold the charge or press b again to fire them.

In PM, you press and hold the button to charge needles. Letting go will fire them. Pressing shield will save the charge.
