Super Smash Bros. Melee has been one of my favorite games of all time and its really fun to play. I've always wished to become a great player and be recognized but unfortunately, I live in a place that doesnt really have tournaments or anything for Melee. I was wondering if anybody could give me advice to help myself be known. Also, if anybody is looking for someone to play with and is nearby, I am also looking so please let me know.

Check the regional boards for someone near you. If you don’t find anybody there, travel to smashfests and tournaments.

1. be good (win tournaments)
2. be smart (give good advice, help other people learn)
3. be serviceable (host tournaments, streams)

or some mix of the above.

Spam regional boards and keep your eyes open. I found a certain smasher on here because he mentioned the name of his town in a character discussion thread.

or be known for something other than how good you are at the game. i bring 6 tvs, 3 cubes, and 3 wiis every time i drive to a tourney. i'm at least known in upper midwest because of it. lol

OMG that must be so much work >.< and your poor fingers! I swear that some CRTs have razor blades on the bottoms. Also,
1. be good (win tournaments)
You HAVE to win tournaments, and they have to be big tournaments. If you are really good at the game but just play in small local tournaments, then not many people will know about you.

To be known:

1. Win
2. Be eccentric ( like InsaneCrazyGuy)
3. Be really good at trash talking like Zoap

The only people who are recognized by the community are the ones who are commentating, winning, or infamous for odd/bad behavior.

These things are not mutually exclusive, either; the most recognizable people are usually the ones doing two or three of these things already.

However the main key factor in being recognized is going to tourneys and meeting people. That's probably the most important part. If you can't do that, you will never be a famous smasher.

It's actually a lot easier to get noticed when you're young. If you can beat high level players, people will label you as some sort of prodigy. Hax, jman, and chillin were like that. But they ended up being amazing, so the whole prodigy thing has some weight behind it.

I remember people used to get famous by making combo videos, but combo videos seem to be a thing of the past now. Still, this is a viable approach if you plan on maining a low tier character. It's a lot easier to get noticed by playing a low tier. Gimpyfish got noticed making his 'Boozer Cute' videos. Taj had his Shadowclaw videos. Really technical videos made people like SilentWolf, Phanna, and Lovage popular.

But the end-all-be-all is that you have to be good at some aspect of the game, whether that's playing, hosting, or commentating.

If there are no tournaments in your area, you have to be that driving force. Start hosting them. Post advertisements. Attract local talent. Get a local game store involved if you can. This might be a struggle at your age, but I'm sure you can find someone to help you out with the hosting. Do you play with others in your area? Or do you literally play solo against CPUs right now?

I helped kickstart the community in eastern Idaho years back. I literally started with nothing. I played with other guys in the dorms, and we simply became the community at first. We slowly attracted more players, and eventually we got in touch with players in the surrounding area (people who actually lived there instead of just attending school there).

It takes a lot of work. Stick to it.

Yeah, it is. Never saw why people wouldn't bring things to help a tourney run as best as possible. I always try to help the TO in any way possible as well. was always just common sense to me lol. if someone is putting in that much effort to run a tournament, the least you can do is try to help it run smoothly

ask for advice then :p watch the advanced technique videos on youtube by wak, practice until you can consistently short hop and l cancel, you dont need local players to learn advanced techs, its actually really hard to learn them without playing on your own to practice them, mew2king's mindset is that if u cant do something 99/100 times frame perfectits not good enough. once u have technical skill down at least a little bit, then try and find locals to play with, get ur parents to drive u or something... im sur illinois is alot better then canada, dont make excuses based on other people, oonly you can improve yourself, if u rely on learning by playing other people u can only get so good.

watch alot of smash matches on youtube

You don't just hop right into it. You have to travel to some tournaments and meet people. Especially if you don't have any where you live.
