How do you edgeguard properly with Mario?

Every time I try to walk-off Cape or even jump backwards into a close-to-the-stage Bair, I end up ledge snapping. Is there any way I can reliably do walk-off gimps and edgeguards without walking into the ledge?

Also, is it hard for Mario to ledge trump? I feel I do it much easier with Ike and other characters besides Bowser.

Ledge trumping with Mario is easy, exactly due to the ledge snapping properties of the Cape. Just walk off and then immediately reverse Cape to instantly ledge snap for the trump.

As to avoid the accidental ledge snap with cape, I find it easier to grab the ledge first and then drop down Cape or aerial.
