If you press jump and the normal attack button at the same time you'll do a short hop and an air attack, works in all directions. Alteritively you can press two jump buttons at once for a shorthop and then use fair.

If you're trying to aim lower to hit smaller characters though, you have to short hop, wait a little bit, and then input the aerial so that it comes out during the descent, just before you touch the ground. The timing for this will change if you want to also fast fall the aerial. Many aerials cannot hit short characters if the aerial is buffered to come out as soon as the jump.

There are three ways you can short hop. You can manually short hop by flicking / quickly pressing a jump button and releasing it before the 3-frame jump squat window ends, which is honestly the best method of short hopping and what you should get used to. You can also hit two jump buttons at the same time for the same effect.

The other way are buffered short hops via fusions, these come out by pressing a jump button AND inputting an attack at the same time. The result is an automatic rising short hop aerial that comes out at the peak of your jump which won't always be what you want / need. You also will have a hard time cancelling attacks via landing sometimes doing it this way.

I recommend C-Sticking for your aerials, as using L-Stick + A is going to result in your spacing getting messed up most of the time, only really use A for NAiring. In terms of FAiring.. just input a FAir.
