There are three hitboxes on Sonic's f-air:
1. the inner hitbox which lasts the full duration and sends opponents at 55 degrees (so away from sonic)
2. the first part of the foot hitbox which is a Sakurai angle, sending aerial opponents at 45 degrees (so away from sonic at a lower angle than #1).
3. the second part of the foot hitbox, which is a 280 degree angle, classifying it at as meteor smash.

In layman's terms, hit them with the foot as Sonic is bringing it down below him—too early will result in a Sakurai angle.

Aim to hit with the back of the heel towards the end of the animation.

Basically, you send them in the direction the back of the heel is pointing.

Just pretend that you're Sonic, do you want to hit someone with your thigh? Hell naw, you gotta strike 'em with that godlike heel.
