Help Using Ike

Someone brought in their Wii and we started playing brawl at work during lunch!
It's been fun but Ive decided its time to get better than my coworkers.
I play as Ike.

One of my coworkers plays as toon link. How the hell can I punish his down strike?
He always spams his meteor smash and all I can do is move out of the way, but I'd rather teach him a lesson.
I tried using my counter but Ike doesn't hit someone above him with it, although it does stop me from getting hurt.

Any good guides on how to use Ike well? Most guides just show the basics of his moves and I know those already...

Hold your shield when the Toon Link goes down and when he lands, punish his end lag. You can also roll out of the way, spot dodge or just run away.

Spot dodge, up tilt, jump, back air. Works almost every time.
