Guile Goes With Smash!

Who Is Guile?
Guile (ガイル Gairu) is a character in Capcom's Street Fighter series of fighting games. He debuted as one of the original eight characters in 1991's Street Fighter II and appeared in the game's subsequent updates. In the games he is portrayed as a major in the United States Air Force who is seeking to avenge the death of his Air Force buddy Charlie at the hands of the villainous dictator M. Bison.

One of the most popular characters in the series, Guile has appeared in other Street Fighter games, including the home port versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3 (where he is a playable character alongside Charlie) and Street Fighter IV. He is also a playable character in various spin-off titles, such as the Street Fighter EX, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and SNK vs. Capcom series. In addition, Guile has appeared in other Street Fighter media. He is one of the main characters in the 1994 live action Street Fighter film and its animated spin-off, as well as Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. The character has also been featured in various official comics and merchandise. His music theme, known simply as "Guile's Theme", has been used multiple times, usually to give a sense of victory.

Guile has been perceived as unique among Street Fighter II characters in both appearance and gameplay. He is noted as having only two signature moves in the game, both of which are performed by first holding a direction on the joystick and then pushing in the opposite direction with a punch or kick - the Sonic Boom and the Flash Kick, respectively. Guile has been well received, with the character often placing highly in various lists of the best Street Fighter characters of all time.

Why Guile?

Whereas Ryu is the face of the fighting game genre and the archetype of motion commands (down, down forward, etc.), Guile is the archetype of charge characters. "Charging" is performed by holding the stick or pressing the direction pad down and/or away from the opponent for at least one second, and then moving forward and/or up. Charges can be performed mid-combo, depending on when the charge is started. Charges can be performed diagonally as well; holding down-back can be followed up by either an upward or forward move, as well as crouch blocking during the charge, and by jumping backwards, allowing charge characters to use their moves using charge inputs as soon as they land. Charging can occur at any point in a round, even including the time before the round starts.

A "charge character" is a character whose moveset largely or entirely consists of moves with charge inputs; such characters include Guile, Urien, Juni and Blanka. Some characters like Chun-Li and Necalli have a mix of both charge and traditional moves. Charge characters have a distinctive playstyle as they effectively cannot use their special moves "on demand," requiring them to either back away, crouch, block or buffer with other moves to execute their special moves.

Guile's theme (particularly the CPS II version from Super Street Fighter II)is so popular that it can be found on YouTube and several other media sources in videos that feature Guile's theme. The meme is appropriately titled "Guile's Theme goes with everything". The number of videos count grew to some 5,000+ as of 2018.

Cons Against Guile's Inclusion

Guile is currently an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros Ultimate which seems to lower if not outright eliminate him from being promoted to playable since as of now a 3rd party assist trophy hasn't been promoted to a playable character. Isabelle, Dark Samus, and Little Mac were all former Assist Trophies that became playable in future games so the precedent exists and if Guile were to become playable he would be the 1st 3rd Party Assist Trophy to do so.

Ryu and Ken, while notable for being the faces of Street Fighter, aren't very popular within the Smash fandom even after being established as formidable characters in both Smash 4 and Ultimate. If Guile were to become playable in a future Smash title it's likely he also won't receive the groundswell of support other characters have received.

Guile also shares steep competition within his genre (Heihachi and Chun-Li are two characters that are decently requested for Smash moreso than Guile) as well as his company, Capcom. Capcom's Resident Evil is widely speculated to make its franchise debut in Smash through the Fighter Pass.

Taunts

Victory Screen

"Go home and settle down" A gender neutral twist on his classic "Go home and be a family man" from SF2.

"That was nothing." Quote from Street Fighter 4.

"You're qualified for combat, but not for victory!" Quote from Street Fighter Alpha 3.

after facing Ryu:

"I can feel your dedication in all of your attacks. I'm looking forward to challenging you again." Quote from Street Fighter x Tekken.

after facing Ken:

  • "Your combos have improved, but your guard is still full of holes." Quote from Street Fighter V. Also a nod to the fun fact that Ken and Guile are brothers in-law. Ken is married to Eliza who is Julia's (Guile's wife) younger sister.
Stage

Air Force Base

Music

If the SF2 themes return in a future Smash game then Guile's Theme is already covered. Perhaps add his theme from Alpha 3.

If World of Light returns or if Guile's Classic Mode is similar to Ryu's then multiple Alpha 3 themes can get added,

Hey I just wanna stop by and suggest "Guile Sends 'Em Home!" as a potential tagline. It's in reference to his "Go home and be a Family Man!" victory quote that was basically a meme before memes existed.

Just a suggestion.

With Terry Bogard's Rising Tackle set as a charge move, charge mechanics are now a part of Smash. Guile is Street Fighter's 1st charge character and due to his current assist trophy status and moveset becoming fully realizable for Smash IMO he has a >0% chance of becoming playable in a future Smash title. Isabelle, Dark Samus, and Little Mac got promoted from assist trophies to playable characters so it is possible. However, it isn't yet known if a 3rd party assist trophy will become playable in the future.

He also faces steep competition within his own series (Chun-Li), his genre, (Heihachi, Sol, etc.), as well as his company (Leon/Jill, Phoenix, Dante, etc.)
