Changing Battle Portraits has changed slightly in Project M 3.6. So here’s a guide on changing this from 3.5 to 3.6:

You will need the latest version of Brawl Box editor:
Old Version - https://www.dropbox.com/s/saj2mk5ku78vh5w/BrawlBox v0.71.zip
New Version - https://github.com/libertyernie/brawltools/releases/download/v0.76_h3/BrawlBox.v0.76.Hotfix.3.exe

You need Project M 3.6: http://projectmgame.com/en/download

You need the CSPs, BPs and RSPs:

CSPs (Character Select Portraits) are the pictures that you see when you are selecting your character before a match

BPs (Battle Portraits) are the pictures that you see during a match.

RSPs (Results Screen Portraits) are pictures at the results screen of a match.

Changing CSP:

In 3.5 they were located in project/pf/system/common5.pac

However in 3.6 you have to go to projectm/pf/menu2/sc_selcharacter.pac

Here,expand the "ARC" file 2nd from the top named "sc_selcharacter_en".

Now expand the "ARC" file named "char_bust_tex_lz77".

Expand the "BRES" file that correspondes to the charcter you're looking to edit.

If you're unsure which "BRES" file is which character, refer to the guide below!

Right click and replace with your file. Remember to press ctrl+s to save when you’re done

Changing BPs:

Here on changing is the same as 3.5. However if you’re changing from 3.5 to 3.6 like I did, be sure to copy the BP files and RSP files like I did, making it easier for you to just paste it. Remember though, while adding the design of the fighter from 3.5 to 3.6 to go to project/pf/fighter/fightername to replace the .pac and .pcs file of the character.

BPs are located in project/pf/info/portrite.

The Infface files are:

InfFace001-InfFace010 = Mario

InfFace011-InfFace019 = Donkey Kong

InfFace021-InfFace030 = Link

InfFace031-InfFace039 = Samus

InfFace441-InfFace447 = Giga Bowser

InfFace451-InfFace457 = Snake

InfFace461-InfFace468 = Sonic

InfFace661-InfFace672 = Warioman

An easy way to find the portrait you are searching for, is to leave sc_selcharacter.pac open and check for the number there.

Example: If I want to change blue Link, he is 023 as it says so in sc_selcharacter.pac

Right click the picture and replace with the one you want and remember to hit ctrl+s when you’re done.

Changing RSPs:

They are the exact same things as CSPs. They are located in project/pf/menu/common/char_bust_tex

Just replace the MenSelchrFaceB with the same picture as the CSPs

The MenSelchrFaceBs are:

MenSelchrFaceB000 = Mario

MenSelchrFaceB010 = Donkey Kong

MenSelchrFaceB020 = Link

MenSelchrFaceB030 = Samus

MenSelchrFaceB040 = Yoshi

MenSelchrFaceB050 = Kirby

MenSelchrFaceB060 = Fox

MenSelchrFaceB070 = Pikachu

MenSelchrFaceB080 = Luigi

MenSelchrFaceB090 = Captain Falcon

MenSelchrFaceB100 = Ness

MenSelchrFaceB110 = Bowser

MenSelchrFaceB120 = Peach

MenSelchrFaceB130 = Zelda

MenSelchrFaceB140 = Sheik

MenSelchrFaceB150 = Ice Climbers

MenSelchrFaceB160 = Marth

MenSelchrFaceB170 = Mr. Game and Watch

MenSelchrFaceB180 = Falco

MenSelchrFaceB190 = Ganondorf

MenSelchrFaceB210 = Meta Knight

MenSelchrFaceB220 = Pit

MenSelchrFaceB230 = Zero Suit Samus

MenSelchrFaceB240 = Olimar

MenSelchrFaceB250 = Lucas

MenSelchrFaceB270 = Mewtwo

MenSelchrFaceB280 = Charizard

MenSelchrFaceB290 = Squirtle

MenSelchrFaceB300 = Ivysaur

MenSelchrFaceB310 = King Dedede

MenSelchrFaceB320 = Lucario

MenSelchrFaceB330 = Ike

MenSelchrFaceB340 = R.O.B.

MenSelchrFaceB360 = Jigglypuff

MenSelchrFaceB370 = Wario

MenSelchrFaceB390 = Roy

MenSelchrFaceB400 = Toon Link

MenSelchrFaceB430 = Wolf

MenSelchrFaceB440 = Giga Bowser

MenSelchrFaceB450 = Snake

MenSelchrFaceB460 = Sonic

MenSelchrFaceB660 = Warioman

Change the portraits to the same ones as CSP, and be sure to press Ctrl+S.

Save backups of these .brres files as incase project m updates again you can use these by just pasting them in the folders.

Changing Stock Icons:

Project M 3.6 has given us the ability to see stock icons when we’re playing. However that’s a problem when we edit the character as the stocks will be incorrect. So here’s a list of stock icons: http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2tyx34/here_is_all_project_m_35_stock_icons/

Now there are 4 parts:

PART 1:
This is viewed in Single Player mode
Edit the ones of your character and then go to project/pf/menu/common/StockFaceTex.brres

Expand Textures and you’ll have Inf Stc.000 all the way to 981. Replace them with the character you added. Refer to sc_selcharacter.pac for the numbers.

Example: Blue link is 23 in sc_selcharacter.pac so he is Inf Stc.023

Edit the stocks and replace them.
MAKE SURE THE STOCKS ARE 32X32 PIXELS OR THEY WILL TAKE UP THE SCREEN/CRASH THE GAME

Remember to save.

PART 2:
This is viewed while fighting. These are the most important stocks to edit.
To edit these, use the same stock pictures as you did previously and go to projectm/pf/info2/info.pac
Expand ARC info_en
Expand MiscData[30]
Expand Textures(NW4R)

Scroll down to Inf Stc. files, It will go from Inf Stc.000 all the way to 468
Replace like you did with the first part.

Remember to save.

PART 3:
These stock icons are viewed at the results screen once the game is over and the result screen appears
To edit these use the same stock picture and go to projectm/pf/stage/melee/STGRESULT.pac
Then you expand ARC STGRESULT
Expand ARC 2
Expand MiscData[120]
Expand Textures(NW4R)
Replace the Inf Stc. files like you did before.

Remember to save after that.

PART 4:
These stock icons are viewed at the classic mode screen.
To edit these go to projectm/pf/menu2/sc_selectcharacter
Then you expand MiscData[90]
Expand Textures(NW4R)
Replace the Inf Stc. files like you did before.

Remember to save after that.

If you did all of this, then congratulations you have succesfully added custom stock icons.

I will post downloads for some of my stock pictures, when I finish editing them.

I hope this helps anyone trying to change these in PM 3.6

If you have any questions/criticisms, feel free to comment.

I took a ****load of information from there^

Tell me if I made any mistakes or anything and I will correct them.

Btw, if you guys were wondering, in netplay version for 3.6 why the csp's aren't working, it's because the current netplay is still using common5.pac as the csp.
So in order to fix this, export char_bust_tex_lz77 in pf/menu2/sc_selcharacter.pac and replace it in the common5.pac in netplay

Also if any CSP or BP files that you wanted to edit are missing, it's because project m has not duplicated it as it's not necessary for them, so for whichever file you want to replace, find it in the Brawl Data Partition (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4vhNdf69qaSZ0N0MnBjOXFYMU0) and then you'll be able to replace things in it.
There's actually a 4th stock icon that you have to change. They're located in projectm/pf/menu2/sc_selectcharacter under MiscData[90]. I believe this changes the stock icons shown when choosing the amount of stocks in Classic Mode.

EDIT: So there's a FIFTH stock icon to change. It's in pf/info2/info_corps.pac under MiscData[110]. I don't know what this changes, though.
Also,

Here's a full, detailed list of ALL of the costumes available in Project M 3.6! The word in parenthesis is the name of the folder in which the character's files can be found!
If you want to replace a character's costume with something else, simply place the .pac/.pcs files in the character's fighter folder.

  • Path to the fighter folder: projectm>pf>fighter>(character in parenthesis)

I could write which colors belong to Mr. Game and Watch, but the problem is his files have always been coded in a strange way. All of his textures are on 2 files: fitgamewatch00.pac and fitgamewatch00.pcs. I used a color editor in 3.02, but I'm not entirely sure how to edit them now in 3.6.

Giga Bowser and Wario Man also have BPs and RSPs. Giga Bowser's are 441-447 and Wario Man's are 661-672.

There's a slight problem though, if you're going to play wifi, replace the battle portraits after you update the pm launcher because for some reason it reverts your BPs back to the original ones when download the online add-on :p

You forgot something, stock icons are actually located in like 3 different places:

Stockfacetex.brres is for the adventure mode and singleplayer mode stocks.
Info.pac is where the stock icons that appear ingame are located.
Miscdata[120] inside STGRESULT.pac is where they appear in the result screen.

You need to update all three entries otherwise some stuff will still be out of date.

What is the stock icon file size limit? And whats the proper way to reduce the size of the file if need be
Well, I used stock icons that were less than 10kb. I used photoshop and ctrl+alt+i to crop and adjust the size of pixels in the image. Otherwise if you can't do this, brawlbox has a preset image editor when you replace a picture that allows you to constrain proportions. This works but the picture might get blurry.

I got mine down to 2kb with an external png compressor program. I was just worried it was too large because the normal icons are like 750 bytes, at least Marios anyway.

but 2kb stock icons worked without a hitch, thanks.

When I try to replace CSPs using the sc_selcharacter.pac they don't show up in game and when I use the common5 they do show up but when I click on them then load up a stage the game crashes. The RSPs stocks and the models show up correctly only the CSPs don't show up. If it helps I'm running the game on Dolphin 6554 and using the 3.6 netplay builder. Any help would be much appreciated.

Same problem as above. I've changed the sc_selcharacter.pac and the common5 and I'm not getting any different CSPs. I'm using the console version of the netplay builder.

Well I checked but i'm not sure about netplay builder, it works fine on my dolphin however :/ I don't use any virtual sd card or anything like that. I just made it into an iso and ran it as super smash brawl on dolphin.

I'm not quite sure what changed but I retried replacing the common5 CSPs again alongside the sc_selcharacter.pac and after that they started showing up ingame with no crashes. Thank you very much for the guide dude it was very helpful.

Is there a way to change the icons in the CSS? I can't seem to find the files anywhere with Brawl Box, and I'm afraid to use Costume Manager to do it since I've had issues with the managers and patch updates.

They are in the sc_selcharacter.pac under MiscData70.

Well, it works for me. I just clicked on the icon in brawlbox, right-clicked and clicked replace and added the new stock and it worked.
Unless you meant adding extra stocks, then i'm not sure.
Make sure the stock icon size you added is 32x32

You forgot something, stock icons are actually located in like 3 different places:

Stockfacetex.brres is for the adventure mode and singleplayer mode stocks.
Info.pac is where the stock icons that appear ingame are located.
Miscdata[120] inside STGRESULT.pac is where they appear in the result screen.

You need to update all three entries otherwise some stuff will still be out of date.
does anyone know if the programs at http://www.lakora.us/brawl/ will be updated to support PM 3.6's new file structure?

Thanks for the tutorial, was having tons of trouble finding the stock locations. This is such an important tutorial that I'd consider it pin-worthy.

The most annoying part about this change is how you'll have to have fitting icons ingame for consistency with your mods now... And then you can't even export and import the icons all together either since they're all different.

This may be a weird question, but is there a way to make battle portraits not show up?

Ive been working on and off on a custom build, and now i cant seem to find where to add a custom picture at the character select screen. I feel like the file should be around these same areas and i know ive done it before.

I'm having an issue now where I've added cBliss support to my game and all the costumes load as they should, but any stock after the default PM ones will not show up EVEN IF I have added it and named it correctly (this is not my first rodeo)

I've been having the exact same issue. I think the code just doesn't account for stock icons right now, only characters they work decently for are Zelda and Sheik, but only for 2 extra costumes. It's all pretty weird.

So who do we speak to? is it Mewtwo2000 or somebody on the PM coding team? How do we tag them in this?

Update:
The same methods work for PM's latest update for the 3.6 full version
Changelist says that Bowser's emblem got updated (resized down to match the other emblem sizes). Are they referring to the ones located in sc_selcharacter.pac? Because I did a search for them and found Bowser's in sc_selcharacter.pac > MiscData[30] > MenSelchrMark.21, but that file's dimensions and size haven't changed from 3.6 beta's. I'm assuming this is just the emblem shown behind the CSP in the CSS, so it didn't warrant change...

Are the files for emblems shown behind the % damage during a match (probably the type the changelist referring to) located elsewhere in the same file, or a different file? Just wanted to check if I can just drag and drop my beta file over lol, or where to get the resized emblem from to update it.
