Nooo. They have three alphabets in Japanese- Hiragana, which is the standard alphabet for Japanese originated words; Katakana, which is used for foreign originated words; and Kanji, which is the picture representation of words like in Chinese. Hiragana and Katakana each only have 46 characters in their alphabet so I can read something if it is mostly written in either of the two. But there are about 50,000 Kanji. I have only learned about 150 or so. Most of the Hiragana and Kanji can be used interchangeably, but reading material is mostly written Kanji including Manga. There are people in Japan who can't even read the newspaper because there are so many.

This "I love Smashboards" written in Hiragana and then in Kanji-

Hiragana: わたしはスマシュボードがだいすきです。
Kanji:　私はスマシュボードが大好きです。
