Gamecube Controller Issue

So I bought a refurbished GameCube controller, and tested it with my Mayflash Adapter and everything worked, except for a few directions of the analog stick. Whenever I put the joystick straight up or down, such as in the character select, the selector barely moves while in game I can rarely jump or duck with the joystick.
