Full-Roster Character Select Screen

I think this could be an ideal, realistic roster. Ridley already has a detailed character model in the game, with animations. Knuckles would be an easy Sonic clone, with added gliding and climbing ability. Daisy could be heavily based on Peach, in terms of character animation, but given special moves that are somehow unique so she is not just a clone. All three characters seem to be safe area for copyright, and only Ridley is somewhat likely for the next game.

This thread was cool when it was "design the Project M character select screen", not "invent your own Smash fan roster".

I was just suggesting clones that are easier to develop! Some people have completely unrealistic expectations, and I just think this is a nice way to make things a bit less chaotic on the character select screen. In this arrangement the first row is entirely Mario, second row is only Zelda, Falcon and Star Fox, third row is other active franchises, fourth is RPGs, and fifth is third party/Fire Emblem/classic. You could substitute Knuckles for another Metal Gear/Fire Emblem/misc. character I suppose, I just used him because his move set would not require a lot of tweaking. Daisy is a different story, but you could replace her with any Mario/Donkey Kong character (including Dixie). I went for what looked the most reasonable.

You could also erase both of those characters and have even numbered rows on the top and bottom, but that doesn't line up too well in the Smash Roster maker, so I just filled those two slots with characters.

reject both choices because kirby is not in the center of the css

at least respect a smash tradition

Does this mean his position on the left in that demo is only temporary? And how would you pull off centering him, by moving the RANDOM button to the bottom right or the middle of the fourth row?

hes not always in the exact center, hes sometimes like to the left of the center icon like random. you can easily see it on 64's, melee's, and brawl's css.

Would a swap of the Kirby/Metroid series make sense? Samus is second only to Link (after Mario characters) in trophy order, and on the SSB4 site. Having the rows led by the most recognizable characters in the game makes a lot of sense, akin to the columns in Brawl. I was originally going by the E3 trailer's highlighted characters.

What would you change about this? Mother preceding Kirby echoes Melee, which I thought was nice. The classic characters are all together now too.

I think this is the best design I can come up with.

The first two columns in the first three rows have either cloneish or alternate versions of the same character.
Kirby is now centered, with Jigglypuff directly below him.
The class of '86 (Link/Samus/Zero Suit Samus/Pit/Zelda) forms a 'u' around Toon Link, an '86 descendent.
The series are listed in their approximate order of introduction: Mario (early 80s), Zelda (86), Metroid (86), NES characters (85-86), Fire Emblem (90), Mother (89), Kirby (92), Pikmin (01). Only the Super Nintendo characters (F-Zero/Star Fox), 3rd parties, and Mr. Game and Watch (who technically was first introduced in Melee) are out of place by series intro.
The four psychic characters (Ness/Lucas/Mewtwo/Lucario) form a square.

Mario characters form the top row, and Pokémon characters form the bottom row. These are the two biggest selling franchises in the game, if I recall correctly.
Second row is Zelda/Super Nintendo series (F-Zero/Star Fox). All clones and alternate forms are next to each other.
Third row are mostly classic franchises that were introduced before the '90s were in full swing.
Fourth row is Hal Laboratories/third parties/misc.

Sorry to quadruple post, but here it is. Do you think there will be additional changes in the future? The Ganondorf/Captain Falcon placement is pretty awkward, and Kirby is not centered. Besides that, there is not a lot to complain about. I wish they would deviate from Melee a bit more, the 'clones' on the borders idea is kind of a stretch at this point.

Overall I like it. Mewtwo is a bit out of place, but other than that it's very logical and Melee-esque.

Some people are not gonna like that Random isn't in the middle, but it doesn't bother me much.

would have been nice if they had used my design though

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that they had moved the random button until you pointed that out.

WarChamp7 said in the AMA that they were hoping to add a few more clones. So I'm hoping that means 3 more, making the CSS a perfect 9 x 5 box. Or maybe just 2 more so the bottom row can have 1 less and the Random can be in the middle. Either way.

I was hoping the random icon would be closer to the Pokemon because I use a Ditto over Random scheme, but still. Looking good.

This is my tweak, with as few alterations as possible.

RATIONALE:
Sonic has had multiple crossover games with Mario. Since the first row features no real 'clones' on the sides, it makes sense to have each space occupied by a longtime rival of Mario.
Second/Third Rows: Clones one left, alternate forms on the right. Having Captain Falcon and Ganondorf next to each other only makes sense, and there has been some crossover between the Star Fox and F-Zero universes, alongside both originating on the Super Nintendo.
Mewtwo and Roy are next to each other in the bottom left corner, indicating their newcomer status.
The fourth row features clones on each side.
Kirby is still below Jigglypuff, although one could easily center him by moving Olimar to his left. However, this would put Kirby out of line with Jigglypuff. There is no way to center Jigglypuff without removing Mewtwo/Lucario from the sides or breaking up Pokémon trainer. It is already awkward enough that Pikachu is not featured in a space that designates him the 'franchise leader' (adding Pichu would really solve this, and the Random button could be moved back to the center with Pokémon occupying the entire row).
The fifth row features all of the classic characters, plus Snake, an NES character himself, whose appearance is basically akin to a "guest star" in this game (frequently breaks the fourth wall, is clearly and comically out of place in the Nintendo universe).

Adding Pichu, moving the Random button to the Pokémon row, and changing the icon to Ditto makes a lot of sense aha

Just wondering what program / site you're using to whip these up. The thing I use is kinda painful to work with, even though I love how it looks.

That's my plan if they add Pichu and that isn't how they handle the Random icon placement.

Kind off-topic, but I'm wondering. If they decide to make a Sonic clone, who would you guys prefer? I'm torn between Tails & Knuckles, they could both breath new life into the game if handled properly(which we all know the PMBR is capable of).

I downloaded all the character portrait images from the official site, threw them into Photoshop, added a border around them, then imported all of them to a Google Docs image maker thing. It's actually nice because you can move them around freely, group them up, add different spacing... it helps me visualize things better. But for a quick edit it kinda sucks.

Tails would be very hard to accomplish. I would rather see Knuckles. Less people hate him, gliding/climbing would be very interesting in Smash, and it would be an easier job on the developers.

Love the new CSS to death, especially that they put the random button on the bottom left. I only have one question, though. Why is Wario in front of Mario? To me, it has always looked weird that Mario wasn't the first one.

Probably so Wario mirrors Dr. Mario's placement from Melee.

If you know how to handle the CSS codes in gecko (which have been around for years) you should be just dandy.

Problem is they don't release the codeset to us, so I'm not too sure how to edit it. I have a GCT decompiling program, but it only reads about six codes of the P:M codeset, so...can someone help me out?

Oo, I think it's almost perfect - I just wish they would switch Ice Climbers with Olimar. Then Ice Climbers will be next to all the retro characters, and they'll even be next to Pit since he'll be right above them and they'd be touching Ness too, which works because they're done in a very similar art style. That's kind of awesome.

Also, if Olimar shifts up then he's right next to Fox/Falco/Wolf, so it's like a bunch of star pilots together. =)

That being said, it has DK next to Yoshi, which is perfect because my favorite is DK and my little brother's favorite is Yoshi (not just in Smash, but Nintendo/video games/life in general haha), so for them to be next to each other, it feels like everything's in the right place. The rest of the CSS could be all over the place, as long as they're together. :D

I actually found it a bit annoying that the Random button was in the middle, I like it much better in the lower right corner.

Alright, I know this is possible heathenry/involves non-revealed characters (who I have added for spacing reasons), but please, bear with me...

This lineup represents my attempts to stay as similar to the present CSS as possible WHILE simultaneously echoing the Melee roster layout as close as possible.

Rationale:

* I have included Ridley and Isaac to fill space and solve problems because they are by far the two most requested characters for Project M, and Pichu is present because he has been hinted at/is a Melee veteran.
- The only two side dwellers who are not clones are at the respective top left and bottom right corners of the map, Wario and Zero Suit Samus/Random. The positions of these icons should be self-explanatory.
- Ridley is in his current position under the assumption he will be a clone of an existing character, and he resembles Charizard more than any other fighter. The same rationale has been applied to Ike/Isaac, but that argument is a little more ambiguous. I could see Isaac having a move set as different to Ike as Mewtwo's is to Lucario's, who both just happen to be above them.
- The right column "clone" spaces are dictated by the fact they form two backwards "L" shapes for each series, Zelda and Metroid, which also happen to be Nintendo's two biggest non-Mario related franchises outside of Pokémon. They also both follow the clockwise villain, alternate form, main character format.
- Yes, Donkey Kong characters are in the second row. I guess the only historical rationale supporting that is that both Star Fox and Donkey Kong were given many of their modern attributes by Rare, that Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country both originated on the SNES, and that Donkey Kong has simply outgrown his status as a Mario character. The only way to solve this dilemma and keep Captain Falcon and Ganondorf in the top row would be to expand the numbers of spaces to ten, but I have been told this is impossible (correct me if I am wrong). Plus, Donkey Kong is below Bowser, and these are the two largest characters in the game, and they have been paired in Event Matches before.
- The two "Captain" characters are next to each other.
- The only border difference from Melee is that Roy is on the left instead of the right (as Pokémon occupy most of the third row) and Wario replaces Dr. Mario. Besides that the top three rows have identical borders to Melee.
- Kirby AND Jigglypuff are both centered!

I hope I have given the developers some ideas, if they wish to continue with the theme of emulating Melee's lineup for the duration of Project M's expansion. If not, sorry for wasting your time!

Oh, and here is an alternative without newcomers:

Not a whole lot of difference from either the above or the current Project M CSS. The fourth row now represents what is leftover from Melee's second row, in order. The four Kirby-eyed characters are next to each other.
