As an F-Zero fan, I actually have mixed feelings about the show. On one hand, Samurai Goroh became cool and got a hot wife to boot. But on the other hand they turned Octoman into a bad guy and turned the Arrows into a joke. Granted, I've only seen 24 episodes of the anime. But those are my first impressions of the anime.
I do agree that making the main character Rick Wheeler/Ryu Suzaku didn't help. I think people were expecting Captain Falcon or another F-Zero video game character as the star of the anime not a completely new character who never starred in the games. (I don't hate him, I just wish he was in a game before the anime was created.)
