I have seen a few combo videos where inkling players seem to Nair while fast falling but any time I attempt to do anything of the like, I just end up doing a Dair instead. Am I missing something? For example the first video in this thread.

They are probably auto-short hopping the Nair with jump+A at the same time and then pressing down on the left stick.
Using the cstick for the aerials is recommended over using the left stick + A for other aerials. You can use the left stick to control your aerial momentum and use the cstick to execute any aerial.
Edit:
I'll make one more note. Make sure you time your Nair and your fast falling correctly. If you input them too close together, you'll get a dair. The includes buffering a dair. You may have to wait just a few frames after hitting nair to fast falling it.
