As is the case for most smash scenes, developments are best summed up in the context of major tournaments. With BEAST 4 in February seeing the comeback of @Armada as a Melee singles player, as well as his crushing defeat at the hands of @leffen’s Fox, it was no surprise that March would set off his quest to re-establish himself. Several major competitions took place across the continent this month, with a French national looming in May.

Avalon III marked Armada’s second Melee singles tournament after his comeback and his sixth trip to the Netherlands. As a result of his major sets pitting him against @Jeapie’s Captain Falcon and @Zgetto’s Fox, both matchups Peach struggles with, Armada mainly went Fox throughout the bracket and took first in dominant fashion, not dropping a single game. Zgetto took out Amsah (@Nihonjin) twice, solidifying his position as the best Dutch player. Amsah in turn ended up rounding out the top 3 after a hard-fought victory over Jeapie. The classic team consisting of Armada and @Aniolas, also know as team UGS, took doubles, forcing the Dutch Melee players to begrudgingly accept a foreign victory in both Melee events.

Team UGS facing wily veterans Zgetto and @Faab for the doubles championship.

The Brawl event consisted of mainly Dutch players for the first time in a while, with longtime friends @Mr-R and @istudying playing out grand finals and winning doubles. The UK had a strong showing with both @C.R.Z and Ixis (@Ixisnaugus) breaking into top 8, the first of which ended up at an impressive third place with his trademark Fox.

The PM side event generated some unexpected hype at the end of the day, as GFs pitted the Melee champion against the Brawl champion, the latter having surprisingly beaten Amsah’s Ivysaur and Fox. Mr-R’s character of choice for both PM and Melee is Sheik, whereas Armada’s Pit requires no further introduction. Armada claimed first place once more, foreshadowing his performance at Smash Ain’t Dead 3. Avalon IV will take place on July 12th.

With SAD3 TO @Alpha Dash united Melee, Brawl and PM players in a UK national that drew some great attendance, including international players Armada, @-Ice- and @Tekk. Armada had another strong showing, beating Ice’s Sheik in both WFs and GFs with the Peach we all know and love, though dropping a game in the first of their sets. Despite valiant efforts by @Fuzzyness to hold on to the UK throne, taking out countryman @Professor Pro in the process, he was bested by Ice twice and had to settle for a third place.

Brawl saw the return of longtime veteran @Anaky, who proved he still knows how to play by going through the bracket undefeated. The runner-up position was reserved for @Kasper, who lost to Anaky twice and left @Luigimitsu and C.R.Z behind him.

The most highly anticipated matchup of the tournament was unquestionably Professor Pro’s rematch with Armada in Project M, after a close grand finals set at BEAST 4. Much to Professor Pro’s disappointment, Armada took WFs with 3-0 and GFs with 3-1, marking another convincing victory for the best PM player in the world. Unfortunately, the PM event finished up away from the stream due to time constraints and the recording by phone has not been made available yet. Professor Pro is looking to solidify himself as the best PM Snake in the world and will attend SKTAR3 (Somerset, NJ) in May.

G.R.A.S. 2 (March 29th & 30th, France)

After the first edition was generally praised by the attending players, host LuK brought back the G.R.A.S. series came bigger and better. The event was capped out with 64 Melee players showing up to the venue in Grenoble, which is a testament to the consistently high attendance in France.

While no notable foreigners came out, the anticipation was high for a clash between French top players Cyr, @Salepate and Tekk, the latter two of which are roommates in Lyon. It was Salepâte who emerged victorious after the initial rounds of Swiss, though Cyr went Mario instead of his usual Samus and still managed to get second. While he switched to his main character in the bracket, he unfortunately forfeited in winners semis in order to catch the last train back to Paris. Despite this disappointment, Tekk and Salepâte put on a great show throughout their three sets in winners semis and grand finals, with Salepâte closing it out in the end.

Tekk got his revenge in the doubles tournament, however. Together with his partner Willy (@Willy OD) he was sent to the losers bracket after the second round, but came back all the way to grand finals to steal away victory from Salepâte and @DjaGoF.

Salepâte proudly lifting his trophy, an actual piece of ham ("gras" is French for "fat"). He later shared his prize with his ever hungry fellow smashers.

While G.R.A.S. 2 was attracting attention in Southern France, it is of note that the Parisian scene held the first ever PM tournament in France. Hosted by former Brawl player Charby, the event called Smash’Archy drew in Brawl and Melee players alike, not to mention some new blood. GFs featured two Melee regulars, with @*Zen’s Charizard claiming victory over @Doraki’s Charizard and Fox.

Republic of Fighters III (May 17th & 18th, France)

Website: http://republicofighters.basgrospoing.fr/en/2014/02/12/rof3-date-and-location/

While April will no doubt see several local tournaments across the continent, it is looking to be a rather tame month as people prepare for the third installment of the Republic of Fighters series. Many big names in the European scene have expressed interest to attend this qualifier for the MLG Grassroots Melee circuit and pursue those coveted seeding points for MLG Anaheim! Major smash countries Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden are all likely to be represented by at least one of their better players, with Armada, Leffen, Ice, Fuzzyness, @Over Triforce and crowd favourite Jeapie all planning to make their way down to Paris, where they will join up with French regulars @Baxon, Cyr, Salepâte, Tekk and many others. Lesser known scenes, such as Finland, Denmark and Italy, are also looking to leave their mark. Stay tuned!

If there were a European M2K, he would have a lot of ham.
